Comment counts don't match comments March 13, 2002 3:07 PM   Subscribe

The comment counts for each thread listed in the Metafilter sidebar are all way off. I did a little digging, trying to see if maybe each count had gotten shifted the thread before or after it or something similar, but in the end I couldn't find any rhyme or reason to it.

I think the sidebar is a static file, generated every 5 minutes like the front page is for people who are not logged in or aren't members.

I had noticed this too. It seems that when threads get deleted, like numbers 15490 & 15492 did, the comment count for the deleted threads gets matched up with the next available non-deleted thread. So, in the sidebar, thread number 15491 has 15492's count, 15489 has 15491's count, 15488 has 15490's count, etc.

The behavior I've been observing is that the count is for new posts. If you haven't read the thread, you get the count of all posts.

heh, I screwed it up, I'll fix it tonight. It's grabbing comments from deleted threads and counting those.
