CPB and the Ferris Club theory redux. September 7, 2010 5:11 PM Subscribe
Cool Papa Bell gets another (uncredited) shout-out.
This time it is courtesy of the After Hours folks at Cracked. It literally appears in the final seconds of this clip.

I stand corrected, then. Just bristled a bit when what I took to be his original contribution to pop culture was so summarily introduced and dismissed without reference. That, and I was proud of him.

That's the dumbest thread I've heard tonight. Of course she's wearing a lace teddy, wouldn't anyone wear a lace teddy for Ferris Bueller?!

I like the idea for sequel to Ferris Bueller, via Wikipedia. The actor who played Cameron is speaking:
"I used to think why don't they wait until Matthew and I are in our seventies and do Ferris Bueller Returns and have Cameron be in a nursing home. He doesn't really need to be there, but he just decided his life is over, so he commited himself to a nursing home. And Ferris comes and breaks him out. And they go to, like, a titty bar and all this ridiculous stuff happens. And then, at the end of the movie, Cameron dies."posted by nomadicink at 6:47 PM on September 7, 2010 [18 favorites]
Not a lot of people know this but, Cool Papa Bell is really John Hughes.

"5 Classic Movie High Schools That Would Suck to Attend." What?? I think something is missing there.

Loved the video, as well as the one from ClassyHands.com. The Cracked guys have really good comic timing. It's hip to hate on Cracked, but I think they have some really talented writers. I'd love to talk to their editor(s) sometime.
I love how this went viral. My little 15 minutes of Internet fame. But yeah, I can't claim it as a true original. Still don't know where I first heard it. The analogy I keep coming back to is that I knew Rosebud was a sled years before ever seeing Citizen Kane, but I won't ever know HOW I knew that. Just picked it up from somewhere in the ether, I guess.
I'm not John Hughes. I'm just Columbus to someone else's Lief Ericsson. Flava Flav to their Chuck D.

Now I'm curious, Cool Papa Bell. Did you come up with the 10 Percent / 100 Percent Rule yourself? I love that one.

He dies, but comes back in the end. Then he leaves, and there's supposed to be a sequel where he comes back a second time, but no one's sure when or even if that one's coming out.

They released the sequel a while ago, but it was pretty lame, like Back to the Future III or Fievel Goes West. One of those 'guy goes running around with Native Americans' things where the story has nothing at all to do with the original, seems like someone just pulled it out of a hat.

Personally, I learned it from Peanuts, in a strip where Lucy spoils it for Linus. But then it was driven home later on by an episode of The Real Ghostbusters.

We really need a word for bits of knowledge that we gain from the culture at large without being able (in most cases) to pinpoint the source: things like Soylent Green being people and the lyrics to "Hey Jude" and how all TV except the last five minutes of "St. Elsewhere" is a figment of an autistic child's imagination. Something German, perhaps. I propose Osmotischenwissen.

The 10 Percent / 100 Percent Rule is mine-all-mine, and unlike Ferris, I can pinpoint the exact debacle of a relationship that spawned that one.
I bet she still has my furniture, too.

The actor who played Cameron
Alan Ruck? He's been in some all right stuff since then. I'm quite liking Person Unknown at the moment on the tubes and I recall Spin City was quite good for what it was.
