Question : Once I've posted a meetup to the IRL page, why does it need to be posted a second time to appear in "Upcoming Meetups?" Shouldn't this be automatic or something?

I'm not sure I follow, are you talking about the difference between proposed and upcoming meetups?

(wow -- talk about a prompt response!)

Well, I posted an event to IRL today, but I noticed that it didn't show up on the "Upcoming Meetups" sidebar. When I clicked on "add a meetup" I was presented with the opportunity to post the event a second time.

I fully accept that I might be missing something here.

Well we let you add multiple meetups [unlike multiple AskMes or MeTas] so ebing abl eto add it again isn't a bug I don't think. I don't know as much abut the mechanics of IRL but I sort of assume the sidebar is some sort of frequently-updated-but-not-instant RSS feed. So, a few questions

- you added a meetup that wasn't proposed but was final, right?
- and you didn't see it on the proposed sidebar on IRL, or over here in MeTa?

This may be a nomenclature thing. If the meetup is "final" [i.e. you're not getting a bunch of people together to plan a location/time] then it won't appear on the IRL proposed list. It will appear in the MeTa proposed list but I'm not sure what the lag time is on that. pb is out on maternity leave more or less, but hopefully mathowie will show up with a more sensemaking explantion.

To answer your question, yes, the event I posted is Final and not Proposed.

One thing I just noticed -- the event I added is a "Performance" and not a "Meetup." Maybe the MeTa sidebar is only for Meetups and not Performances?

If so, then, totally my misunderstanding. Seems a bit confusing, but since nobody else has complained, I'm willing to accept that maybe it's just me ;)

Ah yes, a performance is not a meetup.

Oh! Okay, I was confused. Apologies. I guess you can close this up.

IF YOU STILL LIVED IN NEW YORK YOU WOULDN'T HAVE THIS PROBLEM

TPS, please stop making me miss NYC. That's not fair on a Wednesday morning ;)

Ah yes, a performance is not a meetup.

I assume this distinction is necessary to keep the sidebar from being a mile high, but isn't there some way to include these other types of get-togethers? It seems a shame to leave them out, at least for those of us who don't check IRL on a regular basis.

Well, there are already almost too many meetups in the MeTa sidebar. I'm not sure where you would put additional IRL stuff, that is any easier than just clicking on the IRL tab.

Not on the sidebar, no. A lot of them are region specific and we'd just get the sidebar overwhelmed with NYC and SFO stuff. So people who want to know what is going on in those locations can use the location-specific tools to find out, people who are interested in where meetups are happening [or have happened] can use the sidebar for a quick glance.

Agreed. Looks more like a series of typos.

On MetaTalk, it's strictly a meetup sidebar because it's always been a meetup sidebar, we merely copied functionality that was already in place. Moving it to any type of event on IRL would make it a mile long and we'd have to introduce some sort of date cut-off to keep it manageable. The solution is of course to visit IRL every so often, which we encourage.

Good day then, sir! I will just sit here, with my toasted bagel & lox, in the crisp fall sunshine, reading a copy of the New York Times and looking out over the Hudson, watching the golden leaves drift in the breeze.

Oh yeah? Well, I'm just hanging out here in beautiful San Francisco, where the weather never changes, the train stops running after midnight, and people apparently still take hippies and ravers seriously.

oh god.

I really do miss NYC, don't I?

And NYC misses you.

Speak for yourself! I have to go. I'm going to Coney Island for $2.25 on the train for a Nathan's corndog and some carnival rides at Luna Park. WeeeeEEEeeeeeeee.

But I better hurry back! I have a Broadway opening to attend, and I have to get some matzo ball soup for dinner at the Cafe Edison beforehand.

I am reminded of a certain Magnetic Fields song.

Does NYC have Hardly Strictly? No, no it does not. Does it have a decent burrito? For my definition of decent, of course. No.

(And the weather totally changes! Too warm for you in the Mission? Hop on the N Judah and head to the beach - four miles and ten degrees cooler! And foggy! Ha!)

Speaking of NYC and IRL, why are the boroughs listed as different cities than New York?

New York, NY
Brooklyn, NY
Queens, NY

Is this a failure of Google?
posted by smackfu at 12:56 PM on October 6, 2010

No, you're right, NYC does not have burritos. San Francisco taught me the importance of Mexican food. But you know what NYC does have? Dumplings. NYC taught me how essential and life-affirming dumplings truly are. Granted, you can find good dumplings in SF, but you have to go all the way to the Inner Sunset to find them. NYC has the most fantastic (and cheap!) dumpling shops, and they're EVERYWHERE.
posted by Afroblanco at 1:03 PM on October 6, 2010

Well, and NYC also has decent bagels, which are utterly unavailable in SF or anywhere on the West Coast as far as I can tell.
posted by rtha at 1:07 PM on October 6, 2010

But yes, Mission burritos are incredibly habit-forming. I didn't know what a burrito really was -- and what it could be -- until I came here.

My response to this is, "Sadly, BurritoVille has closed." To which my wife (who spent her formative years in El Paso) invariably replies, "What they served were not burritos. I can't even get Machaka in this g-dforsaken city!"

What's Machaka? Is it Mexican? I can only think of Horchata.
posted by small_ruminant at 1:40 PM on October 6, 2010

Machaca. Yum.

Mmm I've eaten it but didn't know what it was called.

It seems BurritoVille reopened in July, shuttered in September. But their website is back and the phone number connects to a live person who says they're open.

Still no Machaca, though.

Actually, rtha, Ocean Beach is gorgeously sunny & warm right now. There's a light breeze, & dozens of surfers.

This probably emphasizes your point on the variability of the weather of San Francisco.

Totally. If you don't like the weather, walk ten blocks.

Yeah, BurritoVille is kind of a blasphemy, I'll take the burritos here in Boston at Anna's any day of the week over that (but precious little else in this god-forsaken city beats NYC, there, I've said it).

But people, it's like you forgot Brooklyn exists or something. Get thee deep down into 5th Avenue...

*sigh*...I miss New York too...

HEY MODS
when i'm logged in, how about the metatalk sidebar shows me what upcoming events of anykind are happening within my area somehow. Then I will remember to use IRL more. Like my contacts sidebar on the FP remind me to read all of Greg Nogs comments.

THANKS PERHAPS

I've missed events because I didn't check IRL very often. You can make use of feeds to avoid this.

If you click on the city or state, on a page for an event (below the header, above the title), then look to the right of the city or state, there are a couple of feed options. I've put the feed for San Francisco events in my Google Reader, which I check at least daily. The feed covers meetups & performances too. It doesn't cover nearby events in the East Bay, unfortunately; I'd like to request that, incidentally. Instead, you can additionally subscribe to the state & just ignore the faraway stuff.
posted by Pronoiac at 7:22 PM on October 6, 2010

That's helpful pronoiac but I don't use any feeds, I'm au natural. Also I live near three states so it'd be best if it just displayed any events near me rather than just in DC. And I want my Pony to fly and be able to talk. In French.
