How about Dailymotion and MTV too while we're at it?
posted by John Cohen at 6:42 AM on November 2, 2010

I'll add Vimeo to my to do list. It's not trivial to implement, so we need to limit embedded video to those services that we see in a large percentage of posts. Vimeo has definitely crossed a threshold.

jessamyn - I'm certain that this is an idiotic question that stems from the fact that I understand nothing about coding, but how come we can have embedded video, but not the image tag?
posted by tzikeh at 12:43 PM on November 2, 2010

Talk to pb, that's way outside of my expertise.
posted by jessamyn (staff) at 1:22 PM on November 2, 2010

I always assumed the no image tag thing was a policy decision, not a technical one.
posted by kmz at 1:28 PM on November 2, 2010

The short answer is that embedded video is hosted on youtube.com (and soon vimeo.com), both services that monitor/sanitize content from users. The image tag would allow images from any web host, opening up MeFi users to various forms of nastiness including malware and viruses that can be embedded within.

The longer answer is harder to relate and involves these security concerns and the culture that has grown around that security decision. If you take a trip back through the MetaTalk archives you'll find many, many conversations about the image tag. Some people would love to have it back, some would hate it.

I personally believe we are committed to a text-only environment at this point. The initial decision to remove the tag was based on valid security concerns that still exist, and our reluctance to kludge together an alternative is based largely on our current site culture. Again, these are my beliefs—I can't speak for everyone.
posted by pb (staff) at 1:31 PM on November 2, 2010 [1 favorite]

I thought the IMG tag was removed because of potential exploits, as we don't have any reasonable way of knowing where the images are hosted. Embedded video from YouTube's server doesn't pose this problem.
posted by shakespeherian at 1:32 PM on November 2, 2010

Or, you know, what he said.

Right, but as pb alludes, that's only part of the reason. They could just as easily enable images only for flickr or something, but they haven't.

And we don't want to. And if someone would like to have a larger discussion about this, I'd suggest doing it in another MeTa thread.

I wasn't, for the record, suggesting that y'all ought to enable images (for flickr or whatever), just offering clarification on what shakespeherian was saying.

But thanks for suggesting the workaround of posting my images as one-frame videos on youtube, then embedding them.

Now off to upload my video of an elephant pissing in this thread.

I can't speak to the rest of the site, but the parens were invisible to people using the White Background for some time now and pb just went through and made them visible on all the parts of the site. Depending on what stylesheet you had, you may be seeing parentheses where there weren't any before.

Very professional.
posted by carsonb at 11:19 AM on November 3, 2010

Vimeo is set to go on MetaFilter only right now. While I was under the hood I updated the YouTube player as well. You should see a larger video at an HD aspect ratio now, and I'm using both sites' newer HTML5 embedded player.

It looks like the YouTube HTML5 player is a little spotty in places. It doesn't have a very good message when embedding is disabled by the user. It simply says, "video not found" or something. But we felt like wider support was worth the trade-off. Their HTML 5 player is still in beta testing so we should see improvements. And you can always click to go directly to YouTube if there's a problem with the embedded video.

If this looks good we'll roll it out to the other sites. Post any problems here.

Nice pony you got there.

Would be a shame if something were to happen to it.

All I'm saying is, if you don't cough up those Dictionary of the Khazars and Invisible Cities games, well, it's out of my hands.
posted by juv3nal at 4:35 PM on November 3, 2010

Dude that game was a life time ago and running RPGMAKER2000 on my current set up makes lots of weird text artifacts.

I will say this, in the Invisable Citites game, you lost your entire inventory at the start of each new city UNLESS you managed to uncover the painfully occult and obscure way of retaining your self hood between city-transfers. It was all based on charm and wit, not fighting cause I'd been a playing a shitton of Planescape.
