Onions and puppies and the sky in my eyes... December 22, 2010 3:54 PM   Subscribe

Politics and eulogies and hand-waving in my heart...

Can we get some sort of meta-submission of the best of MetaFilter as a front-page post (not just the sidebar, which I'm sure is relegated to "Google Ad-Words" attention for most)?

I'll put something together unless there's a better automated way of doing so?

Do you mean conducting a poll as to 'best posts ever' or something? Best discussions? Best comments?

Let's not and say we didn't.

If you want to pay closer attention to the sidebar you can subscribe via RSS or Twitter if you use either of those.

And if you want to find out what people are adding as a favorite there's always the MetaFilter Popular Favorites tab or Popular Posts & Comments across all sites.

Sidebar works for me. Too much hand waving before I've had my morning coffee unsettles me.

The Podcast also achieves what you seem to be asking for, on a monthly basis.

Yeah, the Twitter feed for the sidebar rocks. I never remember to look at the actual sidebar, but I can manage to make a mental note whenever I get a text from Twitter.

Nothing personal, p-not, but if someone was going to make some kind of best-of-2010 post, I'm not sure that a person who joined on November 20 and has made a total of sixteen comments is really the right person for the job.

Also, stuff on the sidebar is hand-picked by the moderators, often after they see things that a lot of the users have flagged as 'fantastic.' I can't speak for anyone else, but I always give the sidebar the attention it deserves.

Could you rephrase what you're trying to say in a clearer way?

In the meantime, no.

The part where you imply that the sidebar posts are picked for Google ad word worthiness was my favorite.

Kate, I think OP meant that people pay the same amount of attention to the sidebar as they do to Google Ad-words, not that sidebar posts are some sort of sponsored links. (Lookit me, all increasin' the peace.)

Well, I pay attention to the sidebar. Most of us who have been here any length of time do too, I think.

Thanks Gator, I came in to download the Podcast before getting on the ferry. Now can you remind me to pick up my dry-cleaning?

Based on the first three tags for the post ("bestof" "metafilter" "2010") I'm going to use my deductive powers of reasoning and guess that the OP is wishing for a "Best of Metafilter 2010" showcase-style post, a yearly roundup thing, like what news sites and magazines do. A sort of "This Was The Year That Was" with a little teaser and link to the top favorited posts of 2010.

The "Popular Favorites" tab has options for the past 7 days, 30 days, or "all time," but not specifically for a year. Maybe there's a different way to narrow that down (infodump perhaps?). I'm too lazy right now to figure out a solution, but I wanted to offer my interpretation of the OP's request since everyone seems to be in "huh? what?" mode.

what. I thought the side bar was links to cool stuff on Reddit and Boing Boing. Could someone please explain how this thing works? And while we're at it who are these "contacts" and why would I care if one of them got favorited 10 times?

1) there is a 'best of december 2010' contest in progress ... once the results are in, might that scratch 1/12th of the itch?

2) your 'best' would not be my 'best.' imho part of the fun of the site is that every post gets to stand on it's own special snowflakey merits and that each individual gets to engage with the clicking and the links and whatnot according to their own desires.

3) if you do not like the curation of the sidebar (google adwords WTF???!??11 i don't think you are getting what is going on in the sidebar, it's not some seo stunt!), starting on january 1, bestow a favorite upon every post you deem best. on dec. 31, your 'BEST OF MEFI 2011' will be waiting for you! cheers!

I don't really understand it either. panaceanot, can you maybe elaborate on what you were thinking of here? My best guess is that you're suggesting making a post to the front page that would be a collection of links to other good posts that have been made, and if so then the answer is no. That would not be a good use of the front page.

If folks want to chatter here in metatalk about awesome posts, they can do that, and that will certainly happen at some point in January once the December posts contest is over; beyond that, stuff that pb and other folks have mentioned already (RSS for the sidebar, twitter feed, Popular Favorites, podcast thread link dumps) do a pretty good job of supplementing the sidebar links.

ok, many apologies, my wtf-iness came from the reading that OP was equating the sidebar to seo, per kate blank. after warming my chilled reading comprehension at the latest flame-out, i re-read the thread and am now of the opinion OP meant that the sidebar is so much wallpaper to be ignored, per gingerest. so strike the parenthetical from the record; the rest of my post, however, stands with the addition of:

4) Enjoy a nice cocktail or beverage of choice.

Mine's about to be campari-tonic-twist o' lime. cheers!

I think this "contact" thing goes along with believing that the rest of you are real people. You'll have to check with somebody else on that.

This is as good a place as any to point out that Rhamoi has knocked one out of the park, and yoz has followed up with some really keen inside baseball. This thing should be sidebarred so hard it gets flung out of the monitor and sticks to my cubicle wall.
