With mattdidthat's permission (and with mathowie's kind hosting), I wanted to share the Metafilter user ID card — and, especially, the insane and utter brilliance of the included old-comic-ads-style insert — both of which mattdidthat provides free of charge to people who donate to any one of a handful of organizations which he lists here.

(Who's up for actually seeing the mods in the "Authentic Moderator Costumes"? Hey, Cory Doctorow actually showed up in this, after this, so ... )

Wow. Completely awesome, mattdidthat. Totally.

All these years I have been hosting my sites at Cortex's Fighty Hosting. Can't wait to switch to mathowie's kind hosting. I'm sure their customer service is way better.

I suggest an "Authentic Moderator Costume, Contentious Thread Variant." It is a pint of bourbon, and one of these in a pair of these.

Wow that is terrific. I will wear my official moderator costume in some sort of pandering-for-food-bank-donations capacity real soon now, promise. Nice work mattdidthat.

What's this about a moderator costume? I thought that's how they dressed all the time.

Man, I've fallen for the x-ray specs promise SO MANY TIMES!

So yeah, I'll bite... just to get those cool glasses! Then I'll totally be able to see through all y'all's clothes!

So by "fallen for" you mean "been saved from," right?

I think I am going to get me a card and use the photo in my profile.

It would be cool if we could add our ID card to our profiles.

That id looks really well done. If there was a vertical-format security badge-like one, I would wear it at work with my 3 real ones.

They'd make sweet nametags for meetups, too.

This was a happy xmas present. I keep whipping it out at the first sign of trouble and declaring loudly, "It's okay! I'm from the Internet!" Mrs. Jeffamaphone thinks this is very annoying, but until she threatens divorce, I'm going to keep doing it.

Actually, I'd quite like a mefi badge. Something tasteful, like an M in a silver circle with "Everyone Needs a Hug" in Latin around the edge.

That way, when I got to a crime scene, I could hold it up and announce, "Relax everyone, I'm from the internet, and I'm here to help!"

It would be awesome.

mattdidthat's user id card is the single best thing I have in my wallet that is not actual cash money.

Don;t panic, we're from the Internet. We're here to help.

And if we can't, then it its highly likely we know someone who can.

Indiana does their drivers' licenses like that for people who are under 21. What do under-21 Mefites get on their cards? (I'm not one.)

I'm guessing it would work similar to the Point Of View Gun, only would fill the target's mind with all the really sardonic criticisms about the target that are in the mind of the shooter.
