Rhomboid is an awesome teacher January 8, 2011 8:55 AM   Subscribe

Shout out to Rhomboid for awesome Ask awesomosity!

So I wanted to hack something together to notify me of blog hits with a sound in real time... the answers were OK, but Rhomboid just hit it out of the ballpark. Dude taught me about ssh, the Terminal, helped me out with my host TOS, told me about grep, about Apache host logs, shell scripting, conditionals, pattern matching, a full education. And all in a simple way that I could follow.

Now I'm sitting in my office and the blog is dinging away, everybody's excited and motivated to keep on blogging.

THANKS RHOMBOID YOU ARE AWESOME!

I could see this being awesome for the secret underground mod lair, only with Geiger-Muller ticks instead of a ding. Anyone who asks could be told, DAMN STRAIT WE'RE HOT

I read that as "awesome Ask animosity" and thought this was a weird callout.

Also, FishBike is the awesomest.

Eideteker: I am now going to write a script to hit your blog to the tune of YYZ.

So would the blog beep if I pinged the address, or would I have to curl the page?

Rhomboid is a treasure. When I skim the main page, there are literally questions where I think "Oh, Rhomboid can answer that one."

I have just enough residual Unix/Linux info left from my past career as a sysadmin to know and understand the value of his answers. Whenever I read one I think, "Oh yeah, that IS the best way to do it."

And trust me, free high-quality Unix/Linux assistance without attitude is a rare thing in the world.

Aww, shucks. Thanks Tom-B and everyone else!

Bonus points for Tom-B not linking his blog in his profile and only disclosing (without linking) the URL when asked.

So I'll link it here in the original Portuguese and here in the google translation to english.

If a blog beeped and there was nobody around to hear it, was it really read?

That is awesome!! But the answer was so technical that I read it and immediately got a headache in my eye! That's why I stick to the green. Keep being awesome, awesome-ites!!
