Yesterday, January 29th "at lunch time", chunking express and his non-MeFite wife, Shima, had a healthy 5.5 lb. baby girl named Mythalli Mythili.

Awesome! Congrats to both of you! Look forward to seeing our newest MeFite at the next meet-up.

Not what MeTa is for - and I've flagged this post as an extreme violation of the guidance literature.

Let me just invite you to take a closer look at the words of this post: "blah blah chunking express and his non-MeFite wife ...".

Muggle wife? Half-muggle baby (0 posts, 0 comments)? Not acceptable to Slytherin house, you mudbloods - purity is our high goal.

It's typical for you Gryffindor pipsqueaks to have a hooray-holiday in your common room about this, led no doubt by Howie Potter, Jessmione and Cortex Weasly. But some of us are studying for tomorrow's potions exam and would like a little peace and quiet around the halls of MeFi castle. And I say, "boo, hiss!" to marrying outside one's website and diluting our wizarding blood.

I mean, honestly! - some of you will put on your cloak and wizard hat for anyone.

Dear AxeMe,

My mother keeps feeding me after she's eaten way too many onions or garlic. She's great and all and the milk is usually so awesome and life sustaining, but how do I let her know that I'd rather not have it taste like some kind of heavy bisque or alfredo sauce? I've tried crying, crying loudly, pooping, not pooping for a couple of days, and sleeping but nothing seems to get the message across. Hope me hive mind!

Adorable! Congrats. I'm enjoying imagining potential baby AskMe questions....they'd probably all centre around why their parents just don't understand, and why their life is so hard, what with the baths, and the changing, and the not being able to just snoozle attached to mommy's boob all day long.

Thanks for all the good wishes. I was hoping someone would have figured out how to flame out in a baby thread: maybe by the next time I check in.

I think we are going to go with Mythilli. The proper spelling looks to be Maithilli. I think there is an ask mefi question here.

I should power nap.

Mythilli won in the end.or at the very least, it's on her fauxn health card so we are done thinking about that.

Also, Shima enjoyed reading this thread. She sometimes thinks MetaFilter is that site about horrible relationships. No! It is that and so much more.

Also, I like how the phrase "I'd hit it" ended up in a baby announcement thread. You did good, people!

Congratulations to the lucky couple! :) The baby looks gorgeous; here's wishing that she would get all the luck and good fortune that would entail with her name.

Beautiful name. For those of us who don't know any better, how is Mythalli pronounced?

... for it's a very beautiful name indeed, rather poetic for reasons that will become obvious; literally, someone (female) from Mithila, the ancient Ramayana kingdom in which Sita was a princess. Because there is only One (female) Mithila-ian worthy of worship, Sita is often called as Mythili. It is also the name of a language group that was once considered as an eastern Hindi dialect, but is now considered a full-fledged language on its own.

I think we are going to go with Mythilli. The proper spelling looks to be Maithilli. I think there is an ask mefi question here.

I'll try to answer with a Tamil-focussed Weltanschauung, along with key inputs from Devnaagri, and then in the Roman script. :) I'll assume you can read Tamil, and will assume that my muscle-memory is good enough to make a coherent point or two about the Tamil ariccuvaTi (alphabet, if I'm not wrong). :)

So there's two aspects to consider:
1) How would the first syllable be pronounced, மை, or மே?
2) What is the vowel/ conjunct consonant [forgot what you call them in Tamil :) ] for the second syllable?

My reading is that it would be மைதிலீ, I'm presuming, in Tamil, although in Sanskrit, Hindi and other North Indian languages, they'd conjoin 'th' with 'la' and and make it மத்லீ, or मैत्ली in the Devnaagri script.

Given the Harvard-Kyoto Convention, I'd normally have transliterated the name as 'Maitli' from Devnaagri, although it is a _bit_ tricky in non-South Asian situations because Anglophones would confuse the 't' for ட and not த. A 'h' would presumably force the reader to pronounce த, although some purists hate that because re-transliterating back to Brahmi-scripts becomes contextual if you do so. (ie, if you're blindly re-transliterating from Roman to Devnaagri, you'd theoretically be confused as to whether you should use a त or a थ, a distinction that modern Tamil generally abhors, but is crucial in Devnaagri, and in the more formal Grantha script)

Mythilli, is of course, perfectly acceptable transliteration; to my central Indian mind, the additional 'i' (இ) does show the linguistic journey the name has taken from Mithila to the Tamil-speaking lands further down (in which I include Tamil Nadu, Sri Lanka and Malaysia) The only question I have is whether you'd spell the name as மைதிலீ or மைதில்லீ in Tamil; useful to be Tamil-descriptive rather than Sanskrit-prescriptive in situations like this. (I'm leaning on it being மைதிலீ.)

This plate of rajma has been rather delicious. :)

is now considered a full-fledged language on its own.

Which means that it's only a matter of time before there's an entire Indian state by that name, especially once the saffron-clad demogogues cotton onto the idea of reviving Sri Sita's ancient kingdom.
