Hey, check it out: Gamefilter February 17, 2011 1:04 PM   Subscribe

Games are fun, and talking about games is fun. So it's pretty cool that stavrosthewonderchicken has recently built a mefi-inspired site called Gamefilter, for linking to neat game- (video and otherwise) related stuff on the web and talking about those things. Go check it out!

stavros made a Projects post here; I've been checking out the pre-announcement version for a while now along with a lot of other folks from over on mefightclub (which is also awesome), bug-hunting and feeling the functionality out, and it's pretty keen.

Commander... keen.
how has that not been remade with amazing graphics and gameplay the same way GTA remade that old game and became the game that 'everyone' knows about

Only lowercase letters and numbers are allowed.

:(

I'm tempted to make my name capitalspiffycapitalrob, but I'm not an angry teenager anymore. For now.

Huh. Cool, but why not post it in the blue? I see the extra level of sorta-metaness that other projects might not have, but it'd probably get more exposure on the blue anyway.

Yeah, sorry about that. I tried a few tricks to make it suck less on Chrome browsers, but I'll get rid of it entirely, maybe.

Thanking is the new Favoriting.

Heh. Over at MefightClub, thanking is all the rage, darling.

Actually, separation of the MeFi favoriting function out into thanking (just a social, pat-on-the-back thing, untallied) and bookmarking (to keep stuff on your profile you want to go back to) was a conscious decision. We'll see if it pans out as a Good Idea or not. ;-)

Also, my hosting provider with impeccable timing has been giving me some grief the last 48 hours or so, and I'm terrified things will fall over with lots of new visitors, so it goes kaboom, please be patient.

Dude - I own Gamesfilter.com - I bought it back in the Elder Days of Mefi, set something up using the free 'filter' software, and never got round to sorting things out properly. I'd be happy to point it at your hosting.

Stav has been a web-designing machine for about the last 18 months.

Also: I like adrianhon's idea!

Curse you and your non-spacist naming ways!

Cool site, thanks for doing this!

Dude - I own Gamesfilter.com

You have GOT to be kidding me. How random is that? I was just thinking "I wonder who the bozo is that owns the .com"

This is why I luv MetaFilter. WOW!

I am the bozo owner of several small .coms you can buy from me for $1 million dollars.

Wow. Perfect timing, with the whole death of Kotaku-readability. Now I have new, better place to read about games. Thanks!

Heh. There goes the PvZ post i was thinking of making.

Don't let it stop you from posting to the Blue (if that was your intent.) These are separate communities in a very Vinn diagram sort of way. Best of the web and best of gaming most certainly overlap.

I bean-plated this over at Gametheory (Gamefilter's MeTa.)

well there's a happy coincidence.

Groovy! Maybe MeFi mail me (or wonderchickenindustries at gmail) and we can sort it out, with many thanks.

And absolutely, I think, there's no reason to hesitate in posting game-related stuff here at the mothership if you're so inclined -- much bigger userbase and all. Posts at Gamefilter linking back here to the always-interesting discussions that ensue, or [via]-ing or whatever would be fine. I'm sure if GF takes off, the dynamic will more or less sort itself out over time.

MAN, I just LOVE the logo. I just love it. (the site is great too, but I'm really happy to just stare at the logo for a while for now)

In case there's any confusion, I was talking specifically about this Metatalk post. I'm curious why it was posted here instead of on the blue, since the announcement would get more exposure over there (as other Mefi projects have done).

The site looks cool and I'd like it to succeed — that's why I was asking.
posted by empyrean at 3:35 PM on February 17, 2011

I hear you, empyrean. I don't see any reason it couldn't be a post on the blue, but since its sort of in a bootstrapping-its-community place right now and is a "here is a mefi offshoot thing" I felt more comfortable putting it here.

I was going to grow up and use a capital "D", but I can handle lowercase. I can, really. *sniff*

It lacks a professional white background.

I appreciate this.

Absolutely beautiful, Stavros. Man, you got a lot more mileage out of Wordpress than I thought possible.

It lacks a professional white background.

Actually, that was precisely the joke behind the white(ish) background for Metatalk Gametheory. Heh.

Thanks for the kind words, everyone. My heart's been going double-time all morning hoping things don't break and that I didn't miss any showstopper bugs (though there are still minor ones aplenty).

Man, I love games.

Could you add a feature that's, like, a thing I could click on? And then I would have time in my life for such a cool site and all the games I love?

Oh and hey, just in case you missed the comment in the Projects post, hugecranium is giving away free pre-order copies of Portal 2 over at the MefightClub longform group blog to all commenters, so if you're keen (and why wouldn't you be?), then hie thee hence (and check out our podcast while you're at it)!

Perfectly timed with my jettisoning of Kotaku from my browser history -- this looks awesome and I can't want to play with it. Thank you.

Is it really that big of a coincidence that a domain name inspired by Metafilter was created by somebody on Metafilter?
posted by kmz at 8:29 AM on February 18, 2011

Well, I joined. I tried to get into MeFightClub a while ago but to be honest I found it a bit in-jokey and unapproachable - a bit like how MeFi would probably be if you eliminated all but the 200 or so most active members. I hope Gamefilter can turn into something beautiful.
posted by A Thousand Baited Hooks at 4:53 PM on February 18, 2011

I'm sorry you found MFC unapproachable -- we do, collectively, try very hard to be welcoming to new people. In the interest of being more so, there's a new FAQ to guide you through the more labrynthine intricacies of our various sites and subsites and servers and stuff.

But we definitely like new people, and are more than happy to answer questions if you have any, so give us another chance!

Is it really that big of a coincidence that a domain name inspired by Metafilter was created by somebody on Metafilter?

Not really, but it's pretty cool.

Whoa, need to find the achievement email switch.

Yeah, there are an assload of notifications via email set up by default -- that's one of the things I was meaning to change and forgot. Sorry. You can turn them all off in your profile.

I'm a little late to the party-thread, but for those who love games, my new book, THE GAMES BIBLE, is out as of last fall. It's a giant collection of parlor, outdoor, and card games. MeFites gave me a lot of great ideas for games to play at my parties, and I wanted to say thank you.

We finally added Gamefilter the list of "Also On" sites in profiles. So if you have an account over there you can let others here know now.

I just noticed this, thanks to juv3nal, and came over to see if there was any mention of it -- I didn't even know about the social explorer thing before.

Thanks pb!
posted by stavrosthewonderchicken at 7:47 PM on March 11, 2011

Minor thing, which doesn't really matter, but you can just point to /username rather than /username/profile if you want, ie gamefilter.net/stavrosthewonderchicken rather than gamefilter.net/stavrosthewonderchicken/profile.
posted by stavrosthewonderchicken at 2:06 AM on March 12, 2011

Is there a difference between the two URLs?
posted by pb (staff) at 8:29 AM on March 12, 2011

A minor one -- the /username link takes to the 'root' of the profile, which shows recent activity on the site. The /username/profile link takes you to profile information the user has added.
posted by stavrosthewonderchicken at 5:01 PM on March 12, 2011

ok, seems like /profile would be most similar to the other services we have listed.

All good, then. Thanks again!

Y'all will note that I was prescient in predicting this ambiguity about which profile link to use ;P
