Seriously? Lady Gaga SLYT new-release filter? Come on.

How did we get here? Should I have spoken up when they came with the newsfilter? Are we pretty much cool if my next half dozen posts are links to new or recent releases by such unknowns as Fergie, Katie Perry, and Beyonce?

If they're good videos, or even bad ones on interesting topics, then why not post them?

I don't think "The subject of the post is popular" and/or "It's showing up on the internet elsewhere" should be used as deletion justifications.

I think people have a basic responsibility when they post to MetaTalk. They should make a well written post that identifies a problem and offers a solution in clear, non-heated language that respects the site's users and administrators.

Your post did none of this, it's the equivalent of throwing a tantrum while projecting a false image of the site (that's it gone downhill and is a shadow of itself) and then complaining about that image. Your participation in this thread is not helping, as you're getting fighty and want argue that you are right and others are wrong. Love, MetaFilter style: I cannot explain it. It is a mystery

This happens with all the Gaga posts btw, you'll find if you correlate righteously indignant MeTa in response to yet another Gaga FPP over time. As an ardent Gaga nonfan, I recall when it felt like there were a couple two three live threads going on about Gaga at any given time. There hasn't been in a long time. But the pattern follows. Perhaps there's a message there - perhaps its Gaga who is a special case on the blue for all the things that don't make sense, perhaps its easier to let you have a Gaga occassionally if you promise to eat spinach and green beans at least 4 days a week. Maybe teh site is growing up and learning to compromise. The audience demographic has certainly shifted its center of gravity since I've been here and I'm a n00b compared to most of you guys.

So what am I saying here? Either we can have this 'grar' thread, per usual, and realize we're all happily married to the website and its an old old argument that will never be resolved adn besides if it were, life would be little less fun. OR its like my mom's lectures which grate and bore and I simply say "yes, lecture #11 on take your vitamins bla bla" and it stops.

But will Gaga stop popping up every so often? I don't think so... not anytime soonish

Will the grey respond? If past performance is anything to go by, yes, ardently.

But the choice to recognize the pattern is one that we can make, thus allowing us to decide a tad more strategically what our response to the GRAR should be.

You know what, a couple days ago someone posted a thing which looked for all the world to me like someone's fanfiction about the Buffy show, and I even made a comment to be certain because that was a confusing thing to me. I will be the first to admit that fanfiction kind of bounces off my head and I am not really the sort of MONSTER who is hugely on board with it. It was then clarified to me that it was indeed someone's fanfiction about a TV show.

Here is what I did: I said to myself, "Ah, okay," and closed the tab.

Here is what I did not do: Flag it.

Because even though I cannot rightly imagine giving a shit about someone's fanfic, that's got a lot more to do with me than anything else and it doesn't mean no one else should give a shit about it. A lot of really intelligent people, folks whose opinions I respect, were posting in that thread and enjoying the work, and to me that is right and fine. I'm sure there'll be another thread down the line where I am gleefully wittering about some other thing and they can't understand how I could give a flying fuck and they will just sort of close the tab. Hopefully.

See, if I flag it I'm saying that I don't think it should be here for anyone to look at. I'd flag someone posting a tumblr of hairy ballsacks (one a day for a year, trying to score that book deal, don't you know). I'd flag a post which explained how the white race must unite to free us from Zionist oppression, with accompanying VNN links. Those are things for which I can't see a place on this site.

I wouldn't flag a music video from someone I just didn't happen to care for. In fact there have been quite a few single-link YouTube posts from artists I can't stand, but they were well-received by a lot of other folks. So, okay! Awesome for them - and I really do mean that, I'm not being sarcastic.

I personally am not saying you should flag it and move on. I'm saying maybe ask yourself why you're flagging that particular thing; the Venn diagram of things I'd just as soon not see on this site and things I don't believe belong on this site is not a hula hoop, you know?

Gotta disagree. Some of my favorite posts on Metafilter have been single or multiple music videos sourced from YouTube. I've learned about many, many artists that way which I probably would never have encountered otherwise. I've even been introduced to videos by popular artists that I would likely have missed. Have tried to respond in kind with a few of my own posts.

It's not hard to scroll past posts without bothering to open them. Most of us probably do that every day. There's no dearth of content on the front page, and the YouTube posts certainly don't outnumber the rest, or diminish their presence. I wonder how anyone who complains about such things manages to read the Reddit front page, where single images are posted at a high frequency.

If you want a more quality posts, please create and submit them. That strikes me as a better way to change MeFi for the better than censorship, no?

1. You must lash out with every limb, like the octopus who plays the drums.
2. I cannot explain it. It is a mystery.
3. We are number one. All others are number two, or lower.
4. I can see liking it. I can see not liking it.
5. When you care what is outside, what is inside cares for you.

Winners will be announced via a single link Youtube video. With love and respect to the mods, of course.

the YouTube posts certainly don't outnumber the rest

8 out of 20 posts today are YouTube or Vimeo posts. They don't quite outnumber the others yet, but the trend is definitely in that direction.

I wonder how anyone who complains about such things manages to read the Reddit front page, where single images are posted at a high frequency.

I don't read the Reddit front page for exactly that reason. It's full of crap.

That strikes me as a better way to change MeFi for the better than censorship, no?

"censorship""

Non sequitur. Perhaps 2% of this site's active users read MeTa, and it seems that a few people who are participating in this thread, myself included, have no intention of refusing to post links to videos they find interesting online. Which means that unless the mods start deleting YouTube posts en masse, you'll see no change whatsoever to the front page. If you're not proposing actual moderation and censorship, what exactly are you saying?

It dilutes the bits.

I'm curious how much each "bad post" costs MetaFilter, LLC. Obviously it must vary quite a bit, but I'm guessing it boils down to just a few parameters:

-cost to store the post
-bandwidth costs
-storage and bandwidth costs for associated MetaTalk callout
-disaster response team (jessatex)

Anyone have any data on this? I'd put money on offending posts costing less than the price of a stamp.

Here is how it works: You pick a favorite character, absorb yourself in that character, and say "Please enjoy your [insert entertainment/edutainment/infotainment here]."

For example, right now, I am Apu Nahasapeemapetilon.

"Please to enjoy your Lady Gaga!"

People may call Gaga weird, or a standard bearer for a specific kind of freak (with plenty of overlap with the folks Madonna called out to), but do that many people really call her original?

Also, most people don't actually like originality. Actual originality in any art is actually a pretty good predictor of commercial and critical failure.

Me neither. I don't view much of the apparently widespread media so it being "all over the media" is irrelevant to me. I wouldn't have known otherwise, therefore, it satisfies the apparent point of Metafilter. I don't care for her music so I didn't view the post. I rarely care for videos either, so I didn't view the post. That said I see the potential problem in the hey look there's a new video by Will Smith or Steve Malkmus or Cheap Trick is out! |I imagine the flagging system will handle that.

I would say there's a 90% chance that on any given day, I will spend part of it with either Fernando or Waterloo stuck in my head.

'why am i, a dyed in the wool rockist, visiting a site that loves Gaga so much?'

Oh, grow up. Go somewhere else if that awful disposable pop music offends your delicate sensibilities so much.

As for the Gaga "love," 43 front page posts have mentioned Gaga in the last two years. Most of those reference her in the context of wackiness (covers and such) or in the context of some third party. Probably not more than a dozen are single video links and less than that many are links to Gaga's own videos. And from the beginning Metafilter's Gaga "love" has been a mixture of quasi-ironic/quasi-sincere affection for a catchy entertainer with quasi-ironic/quasi-sincere contempt for a NOCD pop musician. World of Warcraft and computer games in general get as much or more attention here than Lady Gaga and a lot less of the accompanying bitching. I don't care about games at all, but it doesn't bother me that some people like them. Metafilter is a borgasmord, like the kid said, and I'm free to take what I want and leave the rest.

Sparx: “I am hugely disappointed my Fernando parody got no favourites at all. I mean, it both scanned, well, pretty much, and told a story! It's because I used the word 'poo', isn't it? You're all so fricken sophisticated. Damn, I knew I should have thought of something better there. Anyhow, I hate you all and will now go and start my own blog. So there.”

No. It didn't get favorites because I did it first.

...Which I would have seen if I had remembered that MeTa doesn't have ajaxy recent post numbers in the tab and previewed instead, but by then it was too late. Anyhow, seeing as you gave me a favourite* anyway, I guess I don't actually hate y'all and the world is safe once more from the possibility of me starting a blog.

*I don't care if it was a pity-favourite, I am not proud.

hermitosis writes "I think it's really funny that Lovecraft in Brooklyn stormed into the thread complaining and asking what was to keep everyone from constantly just posting about their favorite artists -- and then after his comments were deleted, went and posted a thread about the new Mountain Goats album. And that thread is going really well! So you see, the system works."

Surprising it wasn't deleted as a stunt post.

I was really all set to pull the level on it, but there was a nice lively conversation going and I hadn't known just how stunty it was until later. If we see a lot of copycat "here is single link to my favorite band" stuff we'll axe it, but nichier stuff like The Mountain Goats has a different sort of appeal to this crowd I guess [i.e. people seem to grok the "flag it and move on" aspect more than for a pop star sort of post]

Hey guys, remember when I was the cause of this problem? I'm recovering now. I can even be in the same room as my Lady Gaga Fame Monster CD or in iTunes and decide to listen to R.E.M. instead.

I've gone roughly two days without hearing a Lady Gaga song, which is very difficult in the current media landscape.

Anyway, life's funny like that. Anyone want some stained glass cake?
