It's a book birthday! March 8, 2011 12:12 PM   Subscribe

Congratulations to metafilter's own changeling, whose debut young adult novel, Like Mandarin, was released today!

In case you were wondering, it's book1 on this post, and her summary--"Western setting. Confused (young, possibly ff) love. Lonely, moody, poignant" describes it perfectly. I was lucky enough to snag a review copy, and it's an absolutely gorgeous, accomplished novel about the complications of adolescent female friendships.

Also, trophy heads.

Fantastic. And congrats!

And yes I did just favorite the linked AskMe post for future reference, why do you ask?

Because obviously those are the people to ask when I have a similar question

Does she mistakenly use hyphens instead of en-dashes?

Cause that's a dealbreaker.

Wow, thank you so much, Phoebe, and everyone else!!

I'm more of a lurker on this site, so I know you guys better than you know me -- I intellicrush on Greg Nog and Astro Zombie and yes, PhoBWanKenobi with the best of 'em. But I've been here a pretty long time. And I've found that no matter how much recognition I get in my niche industry, you guys are the ones I keep in my head, the ones I hope to impress someday. So it's really exciting to be here, at what feels like long looong last. Truly, in the past two years, I discovered the real way to make time slow down -- getting a publishing deal.

(p.s. here's a guest post where I talk about the Like Mandarin playlist. Thanks again for the recs, guys!)

Jeanne: I did know this! Your book was listed on her sales sheet back when she was courting me, and I totally Googled you like a creeper, and found the query you posted here :)

Congratulations. That's a huge undertaking, and it must feel pretty good to have it behind you.

Way to go, changeling.

For what it's worth, Borders introduced a thing last year where they openly solicit books to put on a "customer recommendations" endcap. I'll be sure to write up a blurb for the book next time I'm in my local store.

Congrats, changeling! As someone trying to break into the world of children's book writing, I know how monumentally difficult it is to get one published. I will most certainly read it!
