what happened to Rory? March 30, 2011 5:05 PM   Subscribe

what happened to Rory Marinich? I don't want to open any wounds or cause any trouble but he was one of my favorite users. I can't see anything in his post history that indicates why he's not longer here. Just wondering what happened.

I don't know, but the other day he posted like 40 some-odd tweets in a continuous narrative form in under 5 minutes. It was hilariously weird.

(Also, did you try emailing him first?)

As I understand it, he has taken up bowling.

He's fine as far as I know and there seems like a reasonable chance he will be back at some point.

Well, he pulled out of a project we were working on because he had too much work, so I assume MeFi is similar.

Let's hope he gets fired soon.

You know, there's 4 chapters written already, there's no reason why it can't be finished. The shared document is still there, I just downloaded it. Do you have the list of people who were supposed to write? We could still solicit them or others to finish out the chapters.

Yes, we can bring the project back from the dead.

"Having a bunch of speculating in MeTa "Hey I noticed that so-and-so closed their account, what's THAT about?" is going to be really problematic. ... The big deal is though that we may have to be a little harsher about "What ever happened to X?" sorts of MeTa posts because I suspect for a lot of people they'll see that someone left and want to know what's up and the story may be an ungood one, or something where we know and can't really tell people, or where no one knows." — jessamyn

Yeah a few people dropped out over the course of a few months and it just kind of lost steam. I think a lot of people who were gung-ho about it in the beginning and ended up having real life stuff going on by the middle of the year and didn't end up having time for it. Or maybe it was just bad luck. Anyway sorry about just letting the project sort of die.

Yes, we can bring the project back from the dead.

I think with a fresh group and a fresh schedule it should be doable. The people who had not dropped out and had not yet written their chapter were me, Salvor Hardin, Nattie, and allkindsoftime. There are 4 completed chapters and it was originally planned for 11, but since there is no outline or anything it's flexible. I was not all that great about keeping the project going so Brandon if you want to take over I say go for it.

Brandon B., I dunno, I think the whole zombie craze is dying out. We'll be like Starriors coming along trying to bust into a market filled with Transformers. What do Starriors do, exactly? Well they have drills in their chests. We'll be the drill-chested guys. I guess it's an exciting way to die, a drill in your chest, but actually having a chest-drill would be silly. And what's holding you in place when you're drilling stuff? Accidentally chest-butt a brick wall and you'll be spinning around like a whirly-gig, change flying out of your pockets, your pants would probably come off. And all for what? No, no, it's just too much, I'm not going out like that.

Ok, so who wants to write a chapter of a collaborative zombie love story? Four chapters are done, there's 7 to go.

What's the story so far? Read the first four chapters and if you want to write a chapter, MeFimail me and let me know. You'll have a month to write your chapter, with Chapter 5 being due April 30th. If there's a specific chapter you want to write, let me know.

This is a first come, first served offer.

Rory? Didn't he marry Amy Pond?

But seriously, when I was a pre-teen over 40 years ago, I had a friend/neighbor named Rory; we would commiserate with each other about our totally-uncool-in-the-1960s names and he probably did more than anybody to encourage me to go all-in with the 'wacky' pen/stage-name Wendell. In recent years, 'Craig' has actually gotten cool (thank you Craig Newmark, Craig Ferguson and Daniel Craig, and NO thank you Larry Craig), and I'm hoping the character on Doctor Who starts the same kind of thing for Rorys.
