He wants to be a journalism major, so I'm trying to spend the summer teaching him about all the 21st century tools of the trade as well as visit every working journalist we can. Anyone in Seattle work at the Seattle Times? (I suppose I should hit up my friends at MSNBC for a visit too).

Also, if you can think of a MeFi-related project that doesn't require deep SQL or coding knowledge but just time and energy, I haven't got too long a list of projects for him to do. We were considering having him work on the MeFi Wiki could be a thing.

I haven't done anything in Seattle in several years, and my contacts there are probably very stale.

But I can generate lists from my company's database for you of journalists and producers in the Seattle area if you would like them.

I'd love a place to keep media mentions of MeFi and MeFi Mods somewhere on the wiki. I know we have one on the "about mefi" page but it would be cool to have one that people can add to and I don't think that exists yet. Does he want proofreading feedback? There are a lot of weird apostrophes. I love his enthusiasm and seeing MeFi as a Real Life Place through his eyes.

Oh, I mention Seattle because we already got the tour of the Oregonian and that's about the biggest paper in the state.

Yeah, I'll ask him to put the media mentions he's garnered so far on the wiki, teach him how wiki editing works, etc, then anyone can add to it.

From his blog:

"After a cheerful welcome, I spent the better part of 45 minutes trying to find an available username that didn’t include any numbers. Many people may guffaw at this, but until you’ve tried to make your username be something other than “jonathan.applebottom129”, don’t knock me."

My instinct tells me that he's not a native English speaker. Is my instinct leading my wildly astray, like usual?

Well, his grandparents live in Oregon (Twitter) and he's only 18, so he's probably native. Aside from the grammatical errors, his English looks pretty good to me.

Also, if you can think of a MeFi-related project that doesn't require deep SQL or coding knowledge but just time and energy ...

I would love to see a good breakdown of MeFi demographics: gender, countries, regions, cities. And I'd be curious about how they've changed over time. Are there demographic differences between the active user base and less active users?

The problem is a lot of this would have to human-coded. People give jokey answers to the gender field in their profiles that are often obvious to people but not predictable ("innie," "outie," "lady bits"). Sometimes they leave it blank but have an obviously male or female real name ("Tom," "Sarah"). Sometimes people enter the wrong coordinates for location. (We have a lot of MeFites who apparently live in Central Asia because they left out a minus sign, but actually live in North America.) Frequently, people do say where they live, but don't give coordinates. Sometimes people don't give this information in their profiles, but it's easily extractable from a quick look at their AskMe questions.

He wouldn't need to go through every user's profile to do this, just a large enough random sample to make reasonably good estimates.

(Occupation and ethnicity would also be interesting, but there may be too little information to try to make any estimates.)

It would be boring and tedious to do, but it could yield interesting results, and your intern could learn something about collecting and using statistical data, and the limitations of using self-reported data. And I'm sure cortex can give him a good lecture about what not to try extract from this information and why.

After that, you can get him to make a map of the "Density of MeFites Around the World," with more detailed ones places where there are a lot of MeFites, like Britain and Ireland, North America, Australia and New Zealand.

Serve in a pint glass over ice. Add a lime wheel if you like. Plays well with ginger and/or lime vodkas and probably every other kind except maybe vanilla.

Pet Peeve filter: when bloggers want to reference someone but not use their name (not sure why the intern wouldn't just say "Mathowie" when he's referencing his boss, but whatever), they usually come up with a descriptive nickname (Marlboro Man, City Girlfriend, etc). Reading "my boss" in every other sentence of every single blog post gets pretty darn old, and severely restricts sentence variety.
