Thank you, all! July 6, 2011 8:40 AM Subscribe
After the last round of holiday crapfests, I'd like to take a moment to thank mathowie, cortex, jessamyn, and restless_nomad (and, if it's still relevant, vacapinta -- for some reason I remember reading that vacapinta is not modding anymore...?) as well as pb for all the wonderful work they do keeping this place running.
Metafilter has filled so many hours of time for me (too many, really; I had best get back to work!) with interesting corners of the web and fascinating discussion. That's due in no small part to the community curators that keep this place running smooth-ish-ly despite a userbase that could give a herd of cats a run for its money in terms of steering. It's been a rocky weekend, and despite that you're all being civil, gracious, and hardworking. Kudos!

I had like four of those Leinenkugel's Summer Shandy beers last night. They're pretty good. I bet there's like a little bit left in the bottle of those, and if I poured them all together into one bottle you might get a sip out of it - so yeah, OK, you guys can have that sip - but I'm not doing any work for it - I'll give you the four bottles and you can do what you will.

I so don't agree that what happened July 4th was a crapfest. It was a very spirited discussion of woman's issues that personally gave me a whole lot to think on several levels. Sure, some people crapped things up - some people just do that everywhere. Comes with the territory. One can have a site where such very spirited discussion takes place from time to time or one can have a site where you hear crickets. I opt for the former.

With respect, it was a crapfest. Tons of people behaved like jerks and treated people in ways that required mod intervention, generated a ton of flags and email, and made a lot of people feel lousy way outside of the normal range for spirited discussion here.
It's great if there was some good that came out of it as well, but there's a giant chasm between those threads and Crickets-MeFi where we usually like to see things happening.

Yeah, to elaborate a little, the thing is that it's not a binary thing where it's either crapfest OR something with value. A thread can be one or both or neither, they're largely independent vectors in terms of a thread's overall velocity. But the crapfest part is unavoidably a determining factor in the kind of stress and work involved; crapfest+value isn't not a crapfest, and value-without-crapfest is very much the ideal and something that actually happens fairly regularly.

just to express my appreciation for his efforts, not being able to properly express my gratitude to the mods makes me feel icky. Anyone can type "thank you." Words are cheap. Shipping and handling is not!(Or maybe some kind of Dropbox where we can send cortex virtual goods made in Minecraft, like "Hey, I made you a Game of Life simulator out of redstone pre-programmed with a Turing Machine implemented in the Game of Life so you can compute while you compute while you compute while you compute, BRMMMMM)

Hugs for everyone! Every day!
And even though I'm Mormon and never drink, I would buy each of the mods a beer should the opportunity arise.

I very much appreciate the work the mods do and I think they do a great job. Thank you all.

One thing I notice, is that when the mods get testy with me they are so darn *nice* about it that it makes me hang my head in abject shame.
Thank you mods.
I think.

If that podcast happens I would like to put my vote in for restless_nomad as read by Sarah Silverman. I also hope to hear that she has some zany one-liners to the tune of "Heeeyyyy, it's a shit show!"

Meanwhile, I read this in GLaDOS' voice.
I have an idea for a new moderator she's pretty free these days.

What are you doing?!
You're not even closing your account the right way, you know.
Do you know who you're flaming? Because I don't think you're flaming who I think you think you're flaming.
Didn't we have some fun, though?
Remember that time I was all like "You're banned"
And you were like "NO WAY"
And I was like "we tried to have you banned."
That was great.

I'll give you the four bottles and you can do what you will.
Mods, I think you just got tipped 20 cents! (40 cents in Michigan!)
Don't forget to report it on your taxes.

jamjam: "Speaking of voices...
Could we possibly have a way on people's profile pages for other users to access a minute-long recording of that user reading a comment of their choice, if they did so choose?
I would find it immensely satisfying to hear your real voices in my head as I read your comments."
Listen closely. This is exactly what I sound like.
"Good news everyone, I've invented a a way for people to hear me in their head!"

P.S. I spent a few days away from any commenting because once again I screwed up. I've been trying to be non-fightish (I'd call it non-fighty, but people hate the word "fighty" and I didn't want to start a fight). But the Fourth was a perfect storm of lots of beer, loys of meat and a few shot's of vodka. I don't do that and a subject that I feel strongly about very well. And so I was one of the assholes that stirred the pot in a certain thread (or two).
I apologize for any insults, invective or plain assholery. Once again, I'll try to be good. And most of all I'll try to remember not to post when I have a perfect storm of alcohol and anger brewing.

I don't know exactly what a loy of meat is, but I'm sure I had a lot of it.

Whereas I just read them all in my own voice because I'm self centred that way. You all have kiwi accents.
