Checkbox to set "mymefi" tab as default September 14, 2011 6:25 AM   Subscribe

Would it be possible to have an checkbox option to set the "my mefi" / "my askmefi" tabs as the default tab that opens for logged in users?

I recently attempted to set up some filters for mefi/askmefi to filter out tags that I know are not good for my mental health and highlight subjects I actually care about - they are useful, but not as useful as they could be because in order to get to them I need to first load up metafilter, see the default "recent posts" and then click the "my mefi" tab - which is just an extra step of friction.

Being lazier than a vogon, I often find myself just scrolling down the page instead, totally neglecting the point of filtering out tempting but vapid subjects. It would be nice if there was a way to set it up so that (assuming I am logged in) I see my customised view by default and have to click on the tabs to see all the other posts?
Thanks :)

Can you stay logged in forever and ever and just change your mefi bookmark(s) to the relevant page(s)?

What you're admitting here is that because you're lazy, you'd like pb to spend time creating something to make things quicker for you. While I imagine the answer to your request will not be the one you want, why don't you simply bookmark the My Mefi and My Ask pages, and stay away from the normal front pages? I've even linked them for you in case you're feeling extra lazy.

This sounds like a good idea to me.

pb is too busy getting his spirit crushed to do this.
elizardbits & gman's bookmark solution strikes me as a reasonable solution.

Bookmark the page you want to go to. We've gone as far as we're likely to in the MyMeFi direction. Your laziness, past some reasonable point, is your own problem to solve.

Agreeing with jessamyn, one bookmark on the client side from whichever computer or computers you do most of your mefi reading will take care of this in a way that doesn't require either new implementation work or new support issues for us when e.g. someone forgets they've defaulted to this alternate view and wants to know why x or y is missing/different, etc.

You could install something like Redirector.

My Magic Awesome Addressbar, or whatever they're calling it these days, pretty much does this for me. When I type 'me,' it autocompletes to Recent Activity first, probably because I visit that one more often.

Also, what's a vogon? I thought I knew, but, as it turns out, I was thinking of 'Dogon.'

A Vogon is a type of poet.

zamboni: “You could install something like Redirector.”

That's a good idea. Actually, you don't even need Redirector; you could just do this quickly (for all browsers on your computer) by editing the "hosts" file on your computer. Just add this line:

174.132.172.58 www.metafilter.com

... then, when you go to "www.metafilter.com," it'll redirect straight to MyMefi.

One of the nice things about most modern browsers is that they'll suggest pages you frequent once you type a few letters. For whatever reason, the "Recent Comments" page of MetaTalk is always my starting place, so it's just a question of typing "m" in the location field, and there it be. Keep hitting the MyAsk page, and not hitting the main AskMe page, and soon enough, typing "a" (or at least "ask") will yield MyAsk as the first suggestion.

If you're impatient, clear your browsing history (or manually delete the front pages of MeFi and Ask) and then start only hitting the My pages.

To be clear: Manually delete the front pages of MeFi and Ask FROM YOUR BROWSER HISTORY. Do not manually delete those pages. Most of us would be sad. :(

Open all the tabs with the stuff you like to read. Set these to be your home pages. Every time you fire up your browser you are ready to rock.

Huh? If you do this, then when you go to www.metafilter.com, it will take you straight to the front page of the blue, until some server work gets done, at which point it will quietly & mysteriously break.

I thought an in-depth knowledge of Vogon culture was a pre-requisite to an account here?
