No more I/P or P/I words from me for at least 10 days. My quota has been exceeded.

Perhaps this is a good time to explain why you're so particularly strident. Any personal anecdotes to allow us to understand your deep pro-Israel zealotry in the face of so much inhumanity? (and mind you, I agree, inhumanities perpetuated by either side)

None, really. Defense of the little guy. Over and out.

*struggles to care one way or the other*

*fails*

But I suppose it's somewhat laudable to drag yourself into MeTa rather than having someone else do it, so a muted, qualified 'good on ya', I guess, even if it's too little too late.

You're gonna embargo yourself til 3:57 a.m., Saturday, May 4th?

I'm taking bets now on AIM, people. There's cash to be made here. ;)

Actually, I encourage everyone to join Paris. I am.

A bit late - PWEI

Seriously though, I think we could all do with a break, no?

OK, sign me up too. Hey, if it wasn't hard it wouldn't be worth doing, right?

I think there should never, ever be a MetaTalk post that's about the person posting. I also think that anyone who thinks one side or the other is completely right or wrong in the Israeli/Palestinian conflict should be banned from posting on MeFi.
posted by anildash at 9:42 AM on April 24, 2002

C'mon ParisParamus...you're full of shit. This thread reminds me of when posters declare their exits from MeFi. Sorry to see you go, but I didn't need a formal announcement. Your credibility is already hurting Paris...you know that, and that's why you're "claiming" to censor yourself. Do me a big favor: put your money where your mouth is. Make it 20 days, not 10. But don't tell us that you'll let it go for 20. Just prove it. (hell, I'd try for 30, but I understand that if a major event occurs, you'll want to speak)
posted by BlueTrain at 10:04 AM on April 24, 2002

I hope I don't regret asking, but what's TCP/IP? I must be the only one who doesn't know, since no one else has asked. I hate it when that happens.
posted by iconomy at 10:06 AM on April 24, 2002

iconomy - TCP/IP = Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol. Tech stuff. In the context of I/P issues, Paris was just making a geek pun.
posted by tdismukes at 10:19 AM on April 24, 2002

TCP/IP stands for Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol. Good intro to it right here.

'Defense of the little guy'

Prat. This thread deserves to be deleted immediately. It truly is the most pathetic meta post that I've yet to encounter. Paris your quota was exceeded months ago....if you shut it for a year, then that might go someway to redressing the balance. Your 10 day guesture, considering that you have already been called on this, is totally inadequant. You just do not have the right to take over a discussion, or a topic. In a thread of 88 posts your comments made up 16%. There were at least 40 other people posting in that discussion. If this was a one off, fair enough, but it is far from that. None of us are perfect, but most here are willing to adapt their behaviour when it is demonstrate to be inappropriate. Your action do nothing but show that you have no respect for this place or the people in it.

iconomy:

TCP is the protocol by which two computers speak to each other over the internet (and elsewhere). computer A turns to computer B and says "hey, what's up?" B responds: "not much... you looking for something?" A replies: "fuck yah, i got the jones for some root beer." B: "is goose island ok?" broken down to computer language, their conversation looks roughly so:

A: SYN
B: SYN ACK
A: ACK SYN
B: ACK

or something like that.

I find PP to be pretty funny, if sometimes mean-spirited, outside the Middle East threads. He's also a laugh riot in the I/P threads but for different reasons. The trick is to not take him seriously. Metafilter surely wouldn't be the same without him.
posted by euphorb at 10:51 AM on April 24, 2002

Wow, you guys are great, the way you provide non-IP taunting and argument to ease PP's transition. Not everyone has friends like that.

Only today I noticed that on his profile it says "Hope you don't take what I write that seriously: most of the time, it's 47.2% to liven up your day. " So he was just winding us up all along.

Thanks for the TCP/IP info, guys. I have no geek cred at all now, do I. And hey, I always have the jones for some root beer myself.

I have no geek cred. I have degrees in mass comm., law and French. I was born in 1963. I didn't know what TCP/IP stood for; just that I need to jiggle with said control panel on my Mac at least once/day when my IE stops working (those with ideas why, feel free to write...)

It's like being in junior high school again (At least for me). And at least this time, I'm enjoying it.

Miguel once suggested on MetaTalk that one of the more graceful ways to make your exit / take a break is to post a message and/or contact information on your user page-- people can check up on you, but it doesn't distract from the ongoing conversations.

(In the case of Paris, however, it's quite reasonable for him to explain that he's taking a break, and thereby make the point that he is not solely responsible for contentious Middle East threads.)

No, really, I'm confused. Why will we miss you? I'm not saying we won't, I'm just not getting your point.

By the way, I applaud your willingness to do this. I hope that doesn't sound self-serving, I really do.
posted by rodii at 3:25 PM on April 26, 2002

Actually, don't applaud. It's just a clever, cynical campaign to raise my Mefi profile even higher; don't you see?

PP said: No more I/P or P/I words from me for at least 10 days

It doesn't say PP is leaving Metafilter. He's just not contributing to IP threads. Then he says

I didn't say I was leaving; just not commenting on the aforementioned subject.

So that's why he's still here. He never said he was taking a hiatus from MetaFilter, only from IP threads. I wonder how he's holding out.
