Wow, no MetaTalk posts for a whole long weekend January 16, 2012 9:10 PM   Subscribe

A very happy MLK Weekend to our intrepid moderators! As we know, the holiday weekends can sometimes be problematic, and I'm pleased that the queue you set up worked as planned to give you all a stress-free long weekend.

I mean, that is what happened, right?!?

There was no queue. What are you talking about?

Oh, I'm sorry, I seem to have your leg here. Apparently I pulled it too hard.

I think we can close this up now that CA has broken the peace and quiet in Meta.

I also wondered about the silence...

MetaTalk was simply On Hiatus, like "Community". It was always intended to come back and finish the season. Next fall, on the other hand...

You have just experienced the rare phenomenon none as "Peace on MetaFilter." Characterized by its low levels of activity on MeTa, and general civility on the green and the blue. Grar is replaced by a general acceptance of FIAMO. The odd thing about Peace on Metafilter is that it only lasts as long as no one talks about it, or god forbid, posts a MeTa remarking on it. After that, historically, the schmoopy has died, the Grar has come back, and the mods' ukuleles strings break.

Thanks a lot, curious artificer.

What's the record for the longest span of time between MetaTalk posts?
posted by introp at 9:50 PM on January 16, 2012

It's been asked before.
posted by arcticseal at 9:59 PM on January 16, 2012

The ever reliable FishBike gave it as 369 hrs in 2010.
posted by arcticseal at 10:01 PM on January 16, 2012

Okay. Now, what's the record for the longest span of time between people asking about longest spans of time between MeFi/AskMe/MeTa posts?
posted by vidur at 10:01 PM on January 16, 2012 [2 favorites]

It was pretty cool when the mods gathered on MetaTalk to play soccer with some MeFi spammers... for one brief afternoon of peace.
posted by KokuRyu at 10:03 PM on January 16, 2012 [2 favorites]

369 hrs in 2010.

2001 dude. No way would that have happened in 2010.

2001 dude. No way would that have happened in 2010.

The answer was in 2010...I suck at giving intelligible answers.

That's okay, I am not so good at reading either.

I was thinking that the previous closed thread was serving as a talisman to ward off any new threads.

You shall not pass post.

awwww, shucks. So how long was this stretch then?

I sort of loved/hated the silence (cue Depeche Mode here). When I saw the 2 MeTas this morning my heart jumped and fell. "Heeeeeey, who broke the silence???" "Hey! New content!"

hahahaha on the 16th I thought my computer was drawing from a cached page and spent five minutes going ??? messing around with firefox settings. /idiot

Well, since you referenced the honorable Dr. King, don't forget that he stated, "In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies but the silence of our friends."

And, the silence here was great. WHILE IT LASTED!

Well, now that this was opened, is it appropriate to comment on the fact that woot raised the price of their daily t-shirts by 20% yesterday? Forget SOPA, I say we go black to protest that.

The silence on metatalk never lasts; sooner or later someone always says 'hay guys did you notice how quiet it is in here??'
posted by PercussivePaul at 5:38 AM on January 17, 2012

That's because we're all behind the couch waiting to jump out and shout "surprise!" (or taters).

Pffft, Nu Fallout philistines. The proper thing to do is to rewrite S.P.E.C.I.A.L. to accommodate the component attributes of mefi commentary, e.g.:

S(nark) - Affects basic comment damage modifiers.
P(ith) - Concision allows a mefite more favorites per word.
E(rudition) - Drop knowledge on opponent's heads for area-of-effect damage.
C(ynicism) - Useful against hoaxer bandits and guile-based attacks.
I(rregardless) - Distract targets with pedant-bait.
A(ggro) - If you can't be right, at least be loud.
L(ulz) - Avoid fights altogether with deft humor.

Personally, I dislike the obsession in some quarters with having long strings without MetaTalk posts. MetaTalk is here for a reason, and people shouldn't be shamed into not using it.
posted by grouse at 11:02 AM on January 17, 2012 [1 favorite]

Except that a long stream of no posts here means a) people are content, there's nothing to complain about or b) zombie apocalypse.
posted by crunchland at 11:45 AM on January 17, 2012 [1 favorite]

I favor the zombie apocalypse... except I didn't see any zombies shambling about...
