Nearing the end of another week, let's talk about something else that is not related to politics. If you should feel so inclined, share something happy, anything that makes you smile or might make the rest of us smile. We need more of that in 2019. Here's a photo of a flower I took on a walk yesterday afternoon. Sending a smile your way. Be kind to others and yourself.
This is a MetaTalk to discuss whether presidential debates, such as the one we had tonight, which was posted as an FPP, should instead be put in FanFare. FanFare is a space with a specific category designated for live "Special" televised events, whereas posting about the debate on the blue (as happened this evening) ends up containing the same kind of fig-leaf URLs that generate liveblogging megathreads rather than actual discussion of a cool thing which was discovered and linked on the web.
On this exact date, one year ago, I messaged Nightrecordings via MeMail to discuss this post about Serena Williams at the US Open. One thing led to another and...we're now married. I wouldn't have the love of my life without this community. I want to thank everyone here who made that possible. Apologies for the selfishness of this MetaTalk. I love you Nightrecordings! ❤️
End of another week, let's talk about something else that is not related to politics. Let's talk about fireworks. Here in N. America we've recently celebrated Canada Day (July 1) and Independence Day (July 4). Both of these holidays are traditionally celebrated with the setting off of fireworks. Are there any other holidays from around the world where you celebrate with fireworks? I'd love to learn more about that. Do you hate or fear fireworks? Do you set them off yourself? Do you attend a local display put on by your town or city? Do you buy them illegally? Are there any specific types you prefer? Blackcats? UFOs? Roman candles? Feel free to share any photographs/videos of firework displays you've attended recently. As always be kind to yourself and others. And remember to practice proper fire safety protocols.
End of another week, let's talk about something else that is not related to politics. I want to hear about your favorite musical(s). Broadway, Off-Broadway, live-action adaptation, film adaptations of stage musicals, etc. Who are your favorite singers/performers/entertainers? Do you have any specific songs that you like to put on repeat? Have you memorized the soundtrack? Do you sing them in your car or shower? Let's talk about a few of our favorite things. As always, be kind to yourself and to others.
End of another week, let's talk about something else that is not related to politics. Let's talk about coffee. Do you like it? Hate it? Love it? Is it something you struggle with? Is a vice or indulgence? Dark, medium or lightly roasted? Milk and/or sugar? Or do you take it black? Do you grind your own beans? French press, pour over or drip? Starbucks or Dunkin? Beanplating is of course, acceptable. As always be kind to yourself and others.
Nearing the end of another week, let's talk about something else that is not related to politics. Tell me about your upcoming plans. Are you planning a vacation? Heading out on a road-trip? Camping, hiking, laying on the beach? Any festivals or concerts you're looking forward to? Maybe it's a stay-cation and you're exploring something local or maybe it's a trip to the other side of the world? Are you soloing it or maybe you have a family, friend, or loved one accompanying you? Or maybe you're just working and doing your day to day thing. Either way, feel free to share your upcoming holiday plans. As always, be kind to yourself and to others. Cheers.
Nearing the end of another week, let's talk about something else that is not related to politics. What are you having for dinner? Feel free to share a recipe or photos. Are you eating out? Leftovers? Cooking something easy and fast? Or fancy and complicated? Or maybe you're changing it up and trying something new? What's for dinner, I want to know. As always, be kind to yourself and to others. Cheers.
Nearing the end of another week, let's talk about something else that is not related to politics. Let's talk about supernatural phenomenon, things that cannot be easily explained, (ghosts, UFOs, aliens, Bigfoot, chupacabras, telepathy, etc.). Have you ever experienced something like this? If so, please share with the rest of the community. Or maybe you firmly disbelieve in things like this and that's totally cool too. As always, be kind to yourself and to others. The truth is out there.
Nearing the end of another week, let's talk about something else that is not related to politics. Let's talk about books. What are you currently reading? Share some good book recommendations (any genre) with the rest of us. As always, be kind to yourself and to others. Happy reading.
We're nearly at the end of another week, let's talk about something else that is not related to politics. I was driving home from work yesterday and I witnessed a man walking a tiny Chihuahua on a leash, he was smoking a cigarette while also drinking from a beer can & was running a little bit late at crossing the cross-walk and did this kind of "I'm sorry." dance in front of me and the way he waved his hand and smiled caused me to burst into an uncontrollable fit of laughter, pure giggles. I'd love to hear stories of a similar nature, some situation that caused you to burst into pure random laughter/joy because you witnessed it or were a part of it. As always, be kind to yourself and others. Cheers.
Happy Wednesday, it's the middle of the week, let's talk about something else that is not related to politics. It's currently raining here and I want to hear your thoughts on rain/thunderstorms. Do you like this kind of weather? Do you carry an umbrella? Do you have any rainy day traditions? I know I like to open up the window and listen to the sound of rain while I read. Let's talk about stormy weather. As always, be kind to yourself and others. Cheers.
End of another week, let's talk about something else that is not related to politics. In light of the recent Notre-Dame de Paris fire, I thought it might be nice to have a thread where we can discuss other beautiful monuments/historical places from around the globe. Share with us places that you've visited in the past or would like to visit if given the opportunity. If you have old travel photos and feel comfortable sharing, all the better. As always, be kind to yourself and others. Cheers.
The March issue of Language, the journal of the Linguistics Society of America, features a citation of a past MetaTalk on the use of the X-much construction on MetaFilter by cortex. [more inside]
It's still early in the week but I'm already overwhelmed with politics and awful news. Let's lighten the mood and talk about something else. If time wasn’t an issue and you had forever to master a skill, what skill would you master? Sword-making, basket-weaving, knitting, quilting, embroidery, carpentry, coding/programming, languages, pottery, cooking, leather-work, tattooing, brewing, hunting, etc? Think like you're inside of a video-game and you have unlimited skill-points to invest in, what skill(s) are you leveling up? Also, be kind to yourself and to others. Cheers.
What does your digital space look like? What type of wallpaper do you use? Do you have a lot of shortcuts/icons scattered everywhere? Or maybe you're more minimalist and you need everything pinned to your taskbar or dock. Or do you consume MetaFilter from your iPad or mobile device? We all type/tap from different places, for those who are game, please share a screenshot. Just being curious. Cheers.
I thought that it might be good to have a place for people to share links/contact information/registration/locations etc. related to voting. The 2018 U.S. Midterm elections are just around the corner (Tuesday November 6, 2018). This isn't the place to talk about #potus45, we have our mega-threads for that. But this is a good reminder to remember to vote, to make sure you're registered, and to get out there and let your voice be heard.
It's the middle of the week, let's shake things up a bit. Tell me about your hair. Maybe you're losing it, maybe you have a lot of it, maybe you just got it cut, maybe you're shaving it, or growing it out. It's maybe on your head, your face, your legs, your chest, your back, or not. Do you like your hair? Has it changed recently? Do you have some hair-related memories from your childhood? Let's talk about hair and break up the week and avoid politics. Tell me about your hair.
End of another long week filled with awful politics/news. Let's talk about something else instead. Tell me about your shoes. They can be the ones you're wearing (feel free to share photos), or maybe there's a story about an old pair that you'd like to tell us about. Or maybe you want to brag about that fancy pair that you wear when you go out dancing, or maybe you want to talk about the comfortable crocs you slip into at the end of the day. Sandals, slippers, running, or casual, whatever kind you have, your shoes brought you here, so let's talk.
It's the end of another week. Politics is awful like usual, and much of the world seems to literally be on fire. So let's talk about something else instead. Tell me about a cool 'life hack'. Maybe you found a way to pack luggage in a way that has made traveling easier. Maybe you found a way to deal with oily skin using some old world natural remedies. Maybe there's a cool browser extension or add-on that lets you do some nifty thing in your day to day Internet consumption. Whatever it is, feel free to share some life hacks with the MetaFilter community. I'm always excited to learn about ways to make my life a bit easier/better.
It's the end of another long week. Let's talk about something nice again. Tell me about your travels. Maybe it's a place right in your home town/city, maybe you're planning a long over due summer vacation, maybe it's the beach, maybe it's a hike through the woods, maybe you're visiting your family/friends a few states/provinces over, maybe you're going to Europe or Asia for the very first time, no matter the place or the distance, tell us about your travels.
Back in January we had a year end call-in show/podcast. MeFites were able to call a line that Cortex set up to record seasonal greetings and well-wishes. A fun way to connect and listen to all of the wonderful people that make up our community. A number of MeFites called in and told some humorous jokes/asides. I previously mentioned how it might be fun to have a specific call-in episode for just jokes that would then be released on April Fools' Day (April 1). I realize it's a bit of behind the scenes work for our moderators, but if they're open to it, I think it would be fun. Let's discuss whether we can make that happen.
There was a shooting in a Florida high school today, it is still a developing story and I'm sure you can seek out that news should you feel so inclined. I want this post to just be about love/kindness/friendship. Maybe you did something special for a loved one, or a family member, a friend, or a complete stranger. It might be a smile you received or your holding the door open for someone. Whatever it is, feel free to share it with us. I just wanted a place for us to connect, we're in this world together trying to get through it all. It may be strange to say, but I love all of you wonderful and crazy MeFites. Be kind to each other. Happy Valentine's Day!
Halloween Jack posed a question in response to aniola's wonderful post about whales and literature.
“So, can any of you boffins on the blue tell me if there's a longer post than this one?”I thought it'd be nice to have a place to discuss that subject and share some of the longer posts that have managed to hit MetaFilter.
There is quite a bit of serious and depressing going on right now: U.S. politics, sexual abuse/assault/harassment in Hollywood, etc. I thought it might be good to have a place to just post happy things. Share something that's made you happy. A photo of a pet. Tell us about a good piece of cake that you just ate. Or maybe you went for a long walk and connected with nature. Whatever it is, just something happy, to remind ourselves that we'll be ok and we'll get through this, whatever that may be. Love to all of you.
I made this post about trees/plants in video games and lazycomputerkids made this wonderful comment. And then Joyce Kilmer Rest Area, Imaginary Jersey Turnpike responded and it was like the comment gods had lined up. Searching for other examples of these types of perfectly lined up comments on the Meta.
I wanted to know what parts of this community do you sometimes forget, neglect, or outright ignore? Maybe it's lack of interest or maybe it's just something you keep forgetting exists? FanFare? Jobs? AskMeFi? Labs? Chat? Podcast? Are you only on the blue? What part of MetaFilter is pushed to the side?
This recent MetaTalk comment brought up some past bit of history, specifically posts that occurred during the first week of MetaFilter. It had me thinking. Were there any standout or significant posts that you recall from the week that you joined MetaFilter?
Over eight years ago, I asked a question about the relative frequency of MetaTalk threads over a stated period. I was just wondering if there has been any further observed data on lengthy gaps between sequential threads in that particular forum.
Would it be possible to get the ability to filter MetaTalk posts by tags and create "My Talk"? [more inside]
I'm not clear on how the queue is working for MetaTalk, and was also wanting to revisit the queue system and how it's currently being used in order to gauge if policy changes should be enacted. [more inside]
Shout out to askmefi! I didn't even need to ask though. This afternoon at 4:00, my eye started acting strange (like I'd looked at a bright light and the spot wouldn't go away) and I thought, eh, maybe I'll google it or call the doctor on Monday. It's going to storm tomorrow, so New Orleans Trick or Treating has been moved to today so I have to take my little kid trick or treating and finish my teenager's Manos Hand of Fate costume. I didn't really know what to google so I thought maybe I'd ask metafilter. I didn't even pull out my phone - I knew all the answers would be "Are you insane, it's your eyesight you imbecile!" noun 1. BRITISH a line or sequence of people or vehicles awaiting their turn to be attended to or to proceed. [more inside]
To help reduce the strain of managing the site with fewer mods, we're going to switch on the Metatalk post queue full time starting today. More details on that within. Also: have you updated your email address in your preferences recently? [more inside]
It's Thanksgiving time in the US. That means the MetaTalk Holiday Queue will be on so MetaFilter mods have a little more time with family and friends. [more inside]
Recent Activity is very close to Best Of with my fast but erratic fingers. Best Of goes to a different page. Do you think it would work better if Best Of was moved to the end of the top row after Random to avoid this, or is it truly just me? [more inside]
I will, I confess, spend a lot of my "waiting for that ball to get lobbed back over the net into my side of the court" time at work on Metafilter, including metatalk. A couple days ago, Metatalk suddenly got blocked by my office's net filter as "pornography." The blue and the green were fine, but not this one. No, sir. Now, obviously, it's just as suddenly back on the okay side of the line. So is this something the mods have to actually manage? Did you know this had happened? Is there someone whose job is to call these various companies up every few days and go "what, me, porn?" Or do these things just flicker in and out of existence without interference for some mysterious reason? (probably related to quantum foam)
It's queue time again. We're going to queue MetaTalk posts this Friday through Tuesday so they can be posted when there are enough moderators around to keep an eye on them. [more inside]
We're adding a short blurb and checkbox to the MetaTalk New Post form that reminds people the Contact Form is an option. [more inside]
This thread has shattered the record for the most comments in Metatalk thread and during the next week might actually break the record for the most comments ever, across all of Metafilter. Typically threads with high comment counts involve politics or religion or sex. If this thread breaks the overall record, it will do so because of loosely organized nonsense. Wanna help?
It's a holiday weekend in the US and we're turning on the MetaTalk Queue. [more inside]
A post about how to use "Metatalk" skill to discuss communication problems and it hasn't been deleted. But I thought we could discuss why it hasn't been deleted. Communication is important, I'm just sayin'
I'm referring to this question and this response. Look, Unified Theory, I'd like to give you the benefit of the doubt here, and assume that maybe you didn't read the entirety of a rather long and rambly OP. And I actually agree with parts of your post - I hated the way the question was phrased as well, and I agree that the assumption that it's automatically creepy for an older guy to be attracted to a younger woman is both sexist and ageist. And, I agree with the many other posters stating the the OP that she handled the situation in a very naive way, and needs to give serious thought to how she sets her own boundaries in situations like this. But. [more inside]
I don’t want to point out anyone or any thread in particular, but something I find odd; In almost every MT thread associated with any small controversy (and they’re all small) someone will jump in, usually right away, with "we should close this up", which as far as I can tell is not up for vote but at the discretion of the mods. [more inside]
Hey, what's the deal with a joke comment being deleted from this recent MetaTalk thread? It was mild joke and I thought the bar for deleting comments from Metatal was much higher. I would ask in the thread, but when someone else did that, their comment was deleted, so here we are.
We're turning on the MetaTalk queue for the weekend. [more inside]
As a compromise over the recent release of titles, we've added the ability to set your title font faces and sizes just like the body and byline fonts/size options on the preferences page. [more inside]
We're going to be queuing MetaTalk posts from December 24th to January 1st. [more inside]
With US Thanksgiving rapidly approaching, it's time for another MetaFilter holiday tradition: The MetaTalk Queue. [more inside]
