Instapaper works! February 19, 2012 10:06 PM   Subscribe

A month or so ago, I emailed Marco at Instapaper noting that MeFi and AskMe pages render in Instapaper without comments. A member of their support team was nice enough to look into it for me and, from the looks of how posts now render, you should now be able to read posts from across the site on Instapaper.

Big thanks to Marco and support team member Richard for help there.

Bonus tip: if you want to read MeFi posts in Instapaper a few days after they're posted (because you want to grab the comments), run the appropriate favorites RSS feed through this Yahoo Pipe, then run that resulting RSS feed through a filter on If This Then That to send it to Instapaper.

If only Readability could do the same... I know they're pretty much functionally equivalent, but my favorite mobile browser has Readability conversion baked into the UI, which makes it a lot easier than custom bookmarklets. Anyway, you'd think a no-frills all-text website would be a cinch to process.

(Speaking of Readability, I wonder when the heck their vaunted iOS app is debuting -- it's apparently been "under review" for more than three months.)

This is good. You won't find a developer who loves his or her users more than Marco.

You can read metafilter on Instapaper in only 4 or 5 (easy?) steps!

Metafilter is one of 3 or 4 websites that I read at least once a week that I usually DON'T read through Instapaper. Using this new functionality -- particularly on old(er) threads that catch my interest but I shouldn't be spending time at my desk catching up on -- might really save me from some time suckage. Thanks.

cjorgensen: "You can read metafilter on Instapaper in only 4 or 5 (easy?) steps!"

You can also read random threads the conventional way, by hitting the bookmarklet whenever you're on the page. I just know there are times when I see a new thread and I think: "Oh, this is interesting, I don't have anything to add, but I'd like to catch up with this thread when it's full of interesting comments." So, a method to do that too.
