Who is attending MaxFunCon 2012?!

Just booked my waitlist tickets, am going along with my podcast partner and another friend.

I guess YoungAmerican is a given, I know ColdChef is out (boo!). I haven't been back since 2009 so I'm hoping at least a couple MeFi pals are going. It was very nice to meet matthowie the first year!

For those of us not going, perhaps there might also be an LA meetup around that time.

I am. My first time, but I have several friends going. In the MaxFunverse I'm known as cruftbox.

Shouldn't this go in IRL?
posted by Chocolate Pickle at 2:51 PM on April 30, 2012 [1 favorite]

Hi Chocolate Pickle, I am not proposing a meetup so I'm not sure what I would post in IRL. I am just asking who is coming to an event which several Mefites traditionally attend.

No, this is fine. I will be around here minding the fort that weekend, though I think technically doing that from NYC.

No, this is fine.

Which sorts of events are fine for MetaTalk and which ones must be posted in IRL?

This one is fine for here. It's an annual event which has, in the past, been sponsored by the site. By and large we'd like people to use IRL and we make the occasional exception. I think we did the same for SXSW and occasional other national or international events (library conference?) where a post in IRL might not be seen by the people who were coming from out of town to go to the thing.

Also, trivia contests with reddit. You know, important stuff.

I've decided to run MinFunCon.

It'll be held on the California station of the Forest Park Line Forest Park Branch of the Blue line in Chicago. In February. Note, there is no eating, drinking or gambling on CTA vehicles or platforms.

Done. You want to come here, or should I come there?

The correct answer, it seems to me, is "both." Normally, I have to warn about people drinking with MeFiChi, but you're a pro, I'm not worried.

much.

I regret that I have only one liver to give for my country.

Don't forget the Funicular.

I have gotten loaded with ColdChef, which is pretty great in and of itself.

Wow, that does sound fun. And I am impressed they are giving single people/attendees discounts to share rooms with others. That's a cool idea- often you get fined single supplements. Looks like there's an east coast one in the fall. Interesting!

And Maria Bamford. That's maximal awesomeness right there. (Realize I am merging east and west events).

PS I saw Matt Haughey and Cortex in the country estate wear pics...cool!

Dude, I think I have been at your event for about 3 weeks straight. When does this thing end?
posted by Devils Rancher at 8:29 PM on April 30, 2012

I will be there, as per usual, with my husband. We will be missing ColdChef.

We would probably be down for an LA meetup before or after, depending on schedules.

I will be going again. I went to the first one and made my triumphant return last year where I did the stand-up open mike with Maria and Jackie Kashian. Super fun!

I can't wait to see everyone. :)

Holy shit is it really $800?
posted by empath at 6:30 AM on May 1, 2012

It's very small attendance I believe, so the costs of the speakers and entertainment aren't spread over that many people.

I could have a lot of fun for $800 bucks. Maybe not maximum fun, but certainly a satisfactory amount of fun.

I'll be there along with Mrs. mmascolino. Last year's events were tremendous and I hope it is just as good this year. The price was initially pretty shocking but when you factor in the intimate scale of the thing plus the lodging, food, drinks and entertainment it isn't as overwhelming as it first appears.
posted by mmascolino at 9:20 AM on May 1, 2012

I'll be there to misjudge the strength of the drinks at Hodgman's pub quiz for the third year running.
posted by unsupervised at 6:56 PM on May 1, 2012

Folks are correct - the $800 includes lodging, food, alcohol, registration and entertainment. There's also a roughly 3-to-1 ratio of paid attendees to performers, presenters and staff. It's a very intimate event.

Why doesn't any cool stuff happen in NYC?

MaxFunCon East is in the Poconos, a short drive from NYC. We put it there specifically because it was the closest appropriate venue to New York. Our partner in the event is WNYC.
