What's your Draw Something username?

I know Draw Something has been taking the office bathroom smartphone world by storm, so let's play!

It's my real name, all one word, located in my profile. I will likely be pretty slow about getting back to you about this, since I mostly just play a quick round when I'm on the toilet at work.

It implies you're supposed to, but you can make a username with nothing but an email address. However, if you do that, you can't play with Facebook friends unless you know their username. Or something.

You don't need one. As of the last time I logged in, the only problem with this is that you get a boring default icon instead of whatever your facebook avatar is. On the upside, the game displays your actual goddam username instead of whatever your name is on facebook, which is handy since I don't know what anybody's real name is and so can never tell who the hell I am playing.

Anyone else had the bug where it lets you send two drawings in a row to your opponent, but they only get the first one, so then you see the 2nd drawing being drawn but the opponent's guesses/answer for the 1st one? Hopefully this won't crop up too often, I gave up on Words With Friends when it would just randomly end games and only reinstalling the game would fix it.

iPad to get drawing space, then some people use a stylus.

The funny thing is that whoever got that drawing probably had to wait 20 minutes for it to fill in.

Drawsometing hates me. It won't give me notifications when my opponents have moved so I have to go manually check. And then it doesn't seem to update for me even then so my friends will think I'm the one delaying the game.

Also, the icon always shows a 1 on it but there are between zero and three people waiting to play.

I was hoping if there's any positive of the Zynga purchase it that they'd have some cash to build capacity so this doesn't happen anymore.

Also, this app is a constant reminder I can't draw for shit. Not only has computers and smartphones made my handwriting unreadable (even by me), it also has ruined my doodling.

It is really hard to doodle on these touchscreens, though. There doesn't seem to be any sense of weight and you can't see what you're doing because your finger is in the way. I can't draw a gorram heart effectively on my iPod. It's still fun to try, but I wouldn't worry too much about your doodling skills.

You haven't seen misspellings until you're drawn HANNUKAH.

God yes. I drew it once, and did a really nice menorah and a dreidel and there's no question that it was Hannukah and the person on the other end got that, but this is a word that even Jews can't agree how to spell, so why on earth would it make sense for this game? I mean, this isn't just a firm one-or-the-other variant like "color" vs. "colour" even (though the question of international boundaries in an otherwise common-language game is an interesting one); romanization of Hebrew is just routinely loosey-goosey in general, with people's casual transliteration of vocabulary being all over the damn map.

Of course, I am also appreciative of quick-n-clean methods of conveying what the word is, accurately. So stick-figure to your heart's content!

I mean, I'll leave off the last letter if I'm interested in seeing the complete image, but I can't guarantee that I'll do that every time.

As for my own creativity, if I'm not drawing stick figures, I'll have something akin to chicken scratch. I'd like to think it's an abstract representation of the word, where your eyes and your mind fill in the appropriate blanks, but YMMV.

My mom and I were drawing for each other one Saturday morning, and first is a tiny little apple in the upper left corner of the screen, then a tiny bee, then a little cat. And I've been looking at the letters and oh! it's alphabet! so, you know, I punch in all the letters and then there's that brief flash of the completed picture before the game tells you how awesome you are, and in that flash I realized that my mom had drawn me twenty-six little pictures (she has an ipad and a stylus) and I have never felt like such a bad daughter as when I did not take time to fully appreciate her miniature narwhal and xylophone.

I blew a streak because I'd never seen Army of Darkness.

Just in case anyone playing with me plans any other film or TV references, while I'm up on a lot of pop culture I have also never seen:

Star Trek (I have been dragged to a couple of the films but have never seen a full episode of any of the various shows)
X-Files
MST3K
LotR
Harry Potter
Narnia
Donnie Darko
Most horror films
Alien and the various sequels
Disney cartoons. (I think I saw Lady and the Tramp when I was little)

All but maybe one or two films based on comic books. (original Batman. Adam West FTW, Superman 1,2, and 3, and maybe a Spider Man)

Pretty much anything that was on cable TV during the 1990s.

I've also never played D&D, read a comic book, and I know nothing of the fantasy genre.

Due to osmosis, I may occasionally get a reference to those things, but there are no guaranties.

I can, however, name any Brady Bunch episode within the first 30 seconds of the show starting, so there's that.

Please don't judge me.

Probably the greatest cause of me going from "GOT TO PLAY THIS HOLY SHIT GOT TO GET EVERYONE I KNOW ON HERE" to "Eh, maybe if I'm in the bathroom or summat" is the repitition of words. There's only so many times I want to draw "Twilight" before I stop chuckling at my own cleverness.

i assume it's from the constant refreshing to see if your games are being updated? i turned that off on my ipad and the battery drain cut down by half.

Nah I turned that off. It only drains when I actually play it. Perhaps the amount of data it transmits/receives is actually fairly high given that it transmits an animation of the entire drawing?
posted by EndsOfInvention at 7:34 AM on May 4, 2012

Actually, I would imagine it only transmits vector coordinates and such - otherwise the data usage would be immense - so I imagine it's more from rendering the animations on the fly than sending them.

posted by routergirl at 7:19 PM on May 5, 2012 [2 favorites]

Thanks, but sometimes my drawings are truly rubbish. The good-ish ones generally happen after I've taken a quick look at google images to (a) work out what on earth a 'slap-shot' or an 'iron chef' is, and (b) get some idea of what an eagle or Justin Beiber vaguely look like.

Having said that, this is probably the first real time I've spent drawing anything since I was 12, and it's amazing how just attempting to draw something you've never thought much about before can improve your technique. I think if I was teaching art to kids, I'd get them using something like DrawSomething on a regular basis. It's fun.
posted by pipeski at 2:34 PM on May 7, 2012

Seconding that your drawings are pretty great! I felt bad when I guessed Iron Man in about two seconds and then your full drawing was revealed. But maybe for you, like for me, the drawing is the point, more than the guessing.
posted by ocherdraco at 2:41 PM on May 7, 2012

It's also interesting to me how people approach getting an idea across, or maybe what images people associate with a word. I had one person draw the comic book character for the word venom, and it took me ages to figure out. The next time it was drawn for me someone did a snake and the little drop off a fang and I got it right away. It makes me want to do something different each time I get a word I've already done, even if all my drawings end up looking like silly cartoons.

My son loves it - he quit drawing a while ago, and now he's rediscovering how fun it is. So yay!
