Well, there is that one Melbourne-based mefi-originated couple - though I didn't know either of them wrote for time-out.

I think it's pretty funny since I only know of one Melbourne based mefi couple, so it's not like its a mainstream dating hotbed in the city!

Metafilter: hours of late-night trawling through unsuitable profiles with a goon box

Interesting that it doesn't mention AskMeFi, since that's the most visible part of the site.

Considering all the people who got into MetaFilter because they started dating a MeFite, I think it's more accurate to describe MetaFilter as a sexually transmitted disease. In the good sense.

Le sigh. What happened to traditional forms of dating? Such as eHarmony, Match, or the librarians choice, OkCupid? Or even woo-ing through even older methods, such as letters, the telephone, or in my case being sent a box of assorted cheeses (it worked)?

I'd say your're not doing MetaFilter at all, prefpara.

I like long walks on the beach, sunsets, and sex involving Saran wrap and track cleats.

That's how we do this, right?
posted by Ghidorah at 6:18 AM on October 4, 2012

Well, how else would we do it?

I have off-brand Saran wrap. There's an overnight flight out of Narita that can get you here in about 8 hours. Bring cleats.

I think this site is a great way to meet people. That's why it's called "matefilter", because Australians often use it to find and make good mates. The only drawback for Aussies is that the place was set up by Americans, who spell "mate" in a funny, American way. But apart from that one spelling error, matefilter is great, and so are its subsites like mate-talk where we all get drunk and say, I FUCKEN LOVE YOUSE MATE. I FUCKEN LOVE YOUSE AND I FUCKEN DON'T FUCKEN CARE WHO KNOWS IT YOUSE ARE FUCKEN BONZA *BURP* FUCKEN HELL I'M PISSED AY. And that is why I am always drunk when I comment here.

Does that mean that when I date from now on, I need to disclose?

"Look, I really like you a lot, but before we go any further, there's something I need to tell you. I'm Metafilter-positive. Now, if we're both careful, and make sure we take precautions to limit your exposure, it's likely that you'll never catch MetaFilter yourself... but there's always a small risk, and I just felt you deserved to know."

You're a better man than I. Generally, I just register an account for them while they're asleep and scrawl the username and password on their bathroom mirror with lipstick before sneaking out like a thief in the night.

Also, yeah, I don't think the author of this article has done any first hand research. I'm guessing she is a lurker or stumbled across threads relating to MeFi romances & localised it for this article. There's many other cities with much larger active Mefi populations full of single people. While we'd love to have new folks along to Melbourne meetups, anyone rocking up hoping to meet lots of available singles might be rather disappointed.
posted by goshling at 7:28 AM on October 4, 2012 [1 favorite]

Mind you I'd be so amused if we post our next meet up details & we get 20 hot new folk arrive and all hook up with each other while the rest of us wonder wtf.

However, if you repurpose your fedora as a take-out container for MeFi-certified organic beans (pre-sorted to remove @, #, and other inedible cruft), you get a 10% discount on your membership to the MeFi Comment Co-op.

Your shift's on the third Friday from 9pm to 3am GMT-2. If you can't make it, you're responsible for getting someone else to cover for you.
