AskMe saved me. Seriously. October 8, 2012 11:50 AM   Subscribe

AskMe saved me. Seriously.

One of the aspects of MetaFilter that drew me in was the incredibly vast breadth and depth of knowledge in the community. It seems that nothing is beyond the ken of the Mighty MeFites.

What sometimes goes unacknowledged are the collateral effects of the advice on AskMe. We don't know who else may benefit from the comments we post, usually never do.

A little over a week ago, this simple comment changed my life, even though it wasn't my question.

Without going into the boring details suffice it to say I was in an unrelenting downward spiral. I didn't know I had that ailment until I read the link in the comment. Treating it has brought immediate life-changing results. (Yes, I went to my doctor.)

MetaFilter is amazing because the people here are amazing. Thank you all for being you, thanks to everyone involved behind the scenes for making MetaFilter a great site.

That is terrific. This is the most well-informed, interesting and polite community I belong to, and I appreciate you all more every day.

Oh, I am SO glad you found something that helped! I read your question and had nothing helpful to add, but my heart went out to you. I could just feel your frustration coming through over teh intranets.

Yay! Score another +1 for AskMe!

Fantastic!

It actually wasn't the OP's question...

Has there ever been a roundup of old unresolved AskMes on MetaTalk to get fresh eyes on them and see if they might possibly at long last find answers?

yes, it's still bugging me that I can't place that song

Well then favorite the comment already! I mean, if a lifechanging post doesn't deserve it...what does?

No harm done, but nobody has to favorite anything. It's okay to not favorite something, and kind of not a great thing to tell people they ought to.

I sent a personal note to KathrynT expressing, however feebly, my appreciation. Thought that to be more appropriate to the occasion.

trinity8-director, it made my day. I am so glad you are feeling better and on the good road.

I'm confused. The comment you linked to was from tinamonster. Did you link to the wrong comment?

Blasdelb, just because a question got an answer, doesn't mean it got the right answer. I think the subset of unresolved is much larger than just the unanswered. I know I've had a couple questions that lots of people "anwered" but most were like "could it be this?" and it wasn't that.

OK, now I will stop arguing with people in this thread. Hooray for AskMe! It works! And hooray for trinity8-director!

Here is the KathrynT comment in question. (I think.)

One of my unresolved questions leads me to believe I should maybe open up a dog-sitting service in London...

Purpleclover has the right link. Guess my RH is still getting in the way! (Now I have something to blame besides being run-of-the-mill stupid.)

Something you want to bookmark for later? If you've absorbed the lifechanging comment then maybe there's no need to return to it.

Fair enough. We all have our own ways to use favorites, I suppose. I use them personally as thumbs ups to people, but my way is no more valid than any one else's.
