Do we get members only jackets now? December 6, 2012 11:16 AM   Subscribe

members.metafilter.com? Please explain! Is it for more than recent activity?

Nope, just shifting some stuff to a different server because we're doing some back end work. Man you folks are speedy.

Yeah, just a little server-side shuffling. members.metafilter.com is a new domain we might use occasionally for members-only features like Recent Activity. That's all we're using it for right now.

There is no cabal.metafilter.com

Oh, that may explain it - for some reason MeFi has been loading everything kind of slow today. I was chalking it up to my own end, but if y'all are doing something as well that may be part of why.

What is your major malfunction, numbnuts? Didn't mommy and daddy teach you not to use comic sans?

Recent Activity is the most server-intensive bit of the site, right?

Will the 1f2frfbf beanie actually be a small school of beanies? Because: YES!

Recent Activity is the most server-intensive bit of the site, right?

That sort of depends on how you look at it. Yeah, it's server-intensive per user viewing that page. Search is also no picnic in that department—it's kind of a toss-up.

RSS feeds for threads are server-intensive because they're accessed consistently by bots. So each individual page isn't so bad, but add up all of the activity and it's server-intensive. Calculating Related Posts is also surprisingly process-intensive, but we cache that pretty heavily.

So in conclusion, server intensity is a study in contrasts. Thank you.

What happened to the extra links in the menu on the mobile version of recent activity? I liked those.
posted by ODiV at 12:29 PM on December 6, 2012

I was hoping members.metafilter would redirect to bucketofcocks.jpg.
posted by subbes at 12:39 PM on December 6, 2012

I restored those extra links, ODiV. Thanks for the heads up.

I don't see them yet, but thanks!

Explain it to me in Star Wars.

Can my Rancor safely eat this captive Jedi, or should I have had him frozen in carbonite right away?

I don't understand - isn't Recent Activity members-only by default? How would you have recent activity if you couldn't log in?
posted by desjardins at 1:49 PM on December 6, 2012

Yep, it is members-only. There's no change here. We're just serving Recent Activity from a different domain name so we can use a different server to generate the pages.

FYI "remove from activity" no longer seems to be working. Firefox, and yes I have logged out and back in. (that is to say, things i previously removed are still removed, but new things return after removal.)

I know. But "platies" appear to be fish. Better keep things easy to overthink. I was anyway more thinking of something like this.

So what happened here? A day or two ago I noticed the Recent Activity pages timing out and now all the members.metafilter.com links redirect back to www.metafilter.com.

We ran this as a trial to work the bugs out. It's something we have in our toolkit when/if we need it, but for now we're back to www all the time.
