What I Made on My Holiday July 8, 2013 8:38 PM   Subscribe

After inadvertently causing this pileup, I feel it behooves me as a brand spanking new mum to offer up some baby photos to the community as a thank you for your patience and assistance. OH YEAH I KNOW HOW TO FORM BABBY.

This is Theodore Owen. He was born back on the 28th of June, having decided that being on time is for peasants. He rocked up well over a week late via c section, and was 10 pound 3 ounces at birth. He is now more like four whole PS3 controllers long than just three and a half. It's like having a one month old with no neck control. Still, my biceps have never been better.

Many thanks to the whole Metafilter community, without whom the last year's worth of reproductive events wold have been much less pleasant. From just providing distraction to providing advice, as well as all the folk who shared their stories of pregnancy, miscarriage and childbirth with the community here. Some of it can't have been easy to share, and so I am grateful that it's here for people like me to draw strength from. Dr. Jilder, Theo and I thank you all.

Follow-up question: did you name him after Theodore the Chipmunk? Theodore is the best of the Chipmunks so you can be honest. You did, didn't you? Also, Theodore is a very nice name, whether or not you named him after the chipmunk. Did you? It's okay, you can tell me.

I know you did.

Excellent baby. I love the expression on his wee face in the first pic - looks like he's drafting a rather stiff letter to the authorities.

...while I remain grateful for the kindnesses of the doughty creatures you have employed to minister to my needs, and grateful too for the whimsical eye of the tailor they have in turn employed on my behalf, I find my current circumstances - dare I say it? - not untroublesome.

In truth, I fear that I may have cause to regret the o'er-hasty abandonment of those cozy lodgings to which I had become so accustomed this past nine-month...

I believe you get the Good Drugs for a C-section, so any pro-Reiki results would be unreliable. You would need to have several more children under varying conditions to reach even a tentative conclusion.

Mrs. Pterodactyl: "did you name him after Theodore the Chipmunk? Theodore is the best of the Chipmunks so you can be honest."

This is a darn adorable tyke. And Theodore is a fantastic name.

But just so we're clear, Simon is the best chipmunk.*

*This is possibly not a neutral viewpoint as my son's name is Simon.

When the first picture loaded on my phone, all I could see was the ears on his fuzzy little hoodie. My brain said, "Her baby is a teddy bear." As if you had actually given birth to a teddy bear. No, I haven't had any coffee yet this morning. Why do you ask?

Congrats!

Yes! Teddy-O! June 28 is my birthday, too! I've been warming it up for you for 29 years; it runs great. (When you're in school, kids will tell you that summer birthdays are lame because you don't get to have a school birthday party. But school doesn't last forever, kid, and summer birthdays are awesome when you're an adult.)

We have a lot of cats, and we treated each time one of our babies began to outweigh a particular cat as a milestone.

Congrats on the new arrival.

This seems like as good a place as any to mention that my daughter Eleanor was born on June 13th, and that I stumbled on the Reiki thread three days later during a sleepless night, after it had ballooned up to 400+ comments. I finally got her to go back to sleep by reading comments in goofy voices. The one that finally got her to stop fussing was Blasdelb, read as an enthusiastic Julie Andrews.

Thanks everyone! While he is not named after a chipmunk, the comparison is not unfavourable, as Theodore is obviously the chipmunk designed for maximum adorability.

As far as reiki goes, I was administered a homeopathic foot rub, whereby dilution was made via distance. Dr. Jilder achieved this by going and having a pizza sub with extra cheese across the road from the hospital. Once we've got a larger sample size we'll report back.

And holy hell! Look at all those other babbies! Congrats Mayor West and St. Alia! We're a fertile bunch, aren't we?

Just wait until your baby smiles at you, Jilder. It is the most wonderful thing you have ever seen.
