Ok, so I figure I'm finally serious enough with MWO that I should find other similarly minded yet sane people to play with.

I've posted a link to a C3 team chatserver over at Mefightclub, but I figure I should mention it here for those folks that don't cross-polinate.

I'm not sure I understand how this is metafilter-related.

It helps if you think of it as an online IRL meetup, but with big robots.

Or as the first line of defense when massive Angels start leveling Neotokyo so that it all ends in a couple of final episodes of despair and we can beanplate over them.

If you haven't formed an opinion on what would happen in a fight between one Atlas and 100 Stingers, can you really be an arbiter of standards?

Technically, it's not, but there's been a tradition of allowing these sorts of posts, whether it's Kiva or fit bit or whatever. It's important to some people.

I figured it was just because he was asking people if the wanted to play.

So cool in my book.

Yeah, "hey, Metafilter, let's do this fun thing some of us are probably already doing by ourselves, but together as mefites!" is generally fine in Metatalk and is one of the more vaporous organizational things that doesn't really make the translation to IRL like most of the traditional meetup stuff has.

I did not even know that MWO was a thing! I hope my Saitek X45 still works!

Sounds like a job for IRL's sister meet-up sub-site, SOTIJNOM.

Yeah I'm too far from actually playing one of those newfangled em-em-o thingies, but I'll take on any one of you in Mechwarrior II, if I can scrounge together a machine that can run it, that is.

man I wish I could play this, but no Linux support and crappy WINE support :(

I totally want to play MWO but my box isn't up to it.

Is MWO cool enough for me (somewhat of a luddite) to try and figure out how to run the thing through Wine on an old linux laptop? I did love me some MW2.
posted by craven_morhead at 2:22 PM on July 27, 2013

Just on a note: if you are trying to run this on old hardware - it might not be easy. On a pretty decent laptop, the graphics routines are such that periodically my laptop overheats and dies. I can run a neural network for two days - no problem... MWO? I can cook an egg in a little over an hour... well less... but... you get the idea.

If you remember the commands to MW2, its 90% the same, your lancemates though are less predictable - hence the desire for coordinated peeps.

If you are having overheating issues you'd be well advised to camp out in a water feature. Failing that, install more heatsinks and radiators, or encourage your buddies to play on an arctic map.

Or, you know, COLDMISER.

MWO is not joystick friendly, which makes me sad but I hold out hope. Also, you cannot choose the map you drop onto. I am a big fan, and have a hell of a lot of fun playing it, but some of the many complaints levelled at the game are fair. Good company can make even the most calamitous drop hilarious.

N.B., I still haven't figured out how to work C3.
