Pony wants a small but meaningful carrot. October 8, 2013 9:09 AM   Subscribe

Recent Activity is very close to Best Of with my fast but erratic fingers. Best Of goes to a different page. Do you think it would work better if Best Of was moved to the end of the top row after Random to avoid this, or is it truly just me?

I don't really have a problem with clicking the back button but you know, tiny ponies are sweet.

I do this ALL THE TIME and my life would be made tremendously easier if the navigation links were at the top of the Best Of blog. Wouldn't have to move the link at all.

I may be missing the point, but would this not just substitute accidentally clicking 'Random' for accidentally clicking 'Best of'?

But that wouldn't go off to a separate page, which Best Of does which is sometimes awkward on outdated device.

Like, Random is just a page of Metafilter, not a separate site.

Heh, I just mentioned this to moderators recently. I do it all the time too. I'm going to guess they will be okay with me sharing this:

We're not likely to change this, but I understand the annoyance. I
wrote a script to disable the link:

http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/178901

If you use Greasemonkey you can install this script and clicking the
link will do nothing.

Yeah, we've had a steady drumbeat of complaints about this. We just moved the Best Of link to the end of the line.

My style of browsing the site depends on sometimes clicking "Best Of" when I intend to click "Recent Activity".

Can we make the link placement a checkbox in user preferences?

I pretty much only do this on my phone when browsing Metafilter with my head hanging off my bed at a weird angle, which is a way of saying that I do it all the time.

Thanks, pb!

Well you've broken the interface and the announcement of said "fix" is crap, too.

Good job all around.

It is probably a testament to the dysfunctionality of my work history that I can't tell which of y'all are kidding.

notyou, can you explain how it's broken?
posted by pb (staff) at 12:03 PM on October 8, 2013

Now whenever I go to click "Best Of" -- in the traditional, CORRECT way -- I wind up at "Popular," which is not the same thing at all. Just because it's Popular doesn't mean it's BEST OF. Especially among monarchists, such as us.

"Home" is where it ought to be. So I'm thankful for that. But "FAQ" should be way over to the right.

The comment window is STILL missing a hamburger button.

We made one but it was stolen by the Hamburglar.

Well, now that you've mentioned Grimacing, it's odd that the FAQ subdomain takes me to "MetaTalk" and its only nav link is to Best Of. The Wiki and Search links would not make inappropriate Fry Guys in that context. Though I'm especially fond of Random there and elsewhere. Or would be had it been.

oh man i am so so happy about this!! i wasn't going to complain because i figured i was just being a snowflake about the whole thing, but the misclick happens me constantly! i do a dance for you, mods!

Yeah, that link to Best Of shouldn't be there. We'll fix that up.

I am still missing up high and hitting popular or random. That isn't as bad as hitting Best Of since you are only one click away from hitting recent, but it might be best if Recent was the one off to the top right. I don't think I will miss low and hit Favorites.
posted by Drinky Die at 8:05 PM on October 8, 2013

On second though I might be more likely to hit favorites there, disregard.

I vote that ALL links should go to Random pages. The tired and outdated policy of "non-chaotic navigation" has betrayed us all, and the rime is surely tripe for the swindle of change to flaw through the volley of the shadow of MetaFilter, compellating us all with its iron fist.

As such, the pro-rationalist "mods" should be swiftly and slowly crushed under a new leaf, and a new, chaotic overload should rise down on us all like the dry rain of a thousand sundae knights.

In that cortex, please vote #1 quidnunc kid for Chief Oxymoron of Metafilter, and every lick you clink will henceforth garble the dadabase anew and spray the juicy moth-phlegm of papulation all over your quadrigenarious fanions.

I remain, my gurgitation bantlings,

Your most umbraculiform juggins,

q. kid (the), esquirter.

I love when I can tell within the first line who the commenter is.

(And yes, of course I voted #1 QUIDNUNC KID.)

Thanks, pb, for this magnificent root vegetable which has been lovingly gnawed upon by many people and their equine friends. I'm happy that my first meta post was not a shitstorm and that the delightful, talented and exotically flavoured quidnunc kid favoured us with his glorious presence. I know I'm thinking about moths a lot now.

I can't see the quidnunc kid blocking supply, can you? Vote #1 now!
