We're not talking about this. Period. December 4, 2013 9:59 AM   Subscribe

Am I correct in inferring that there has been some moderate moderation to this thread (about how fraught the use of periods has become in texting and other new communication methods) to remove references to President Obama's repeated use of the word "Period!" in speeches to attempt to add veracity to an oft-repeated lie?

It seems curious, given the wide-ranging nature of many discussions hereabouts, that this obvious wrinkle in the topic of "periods" is nowhere to be found in thread. I also observe the thread seems to include comments that would only make sense if responding to some troll who brought up that uncomfortable topic.

this obvious wrinkle in the topic of "periods"

FWIW I've never noticed Obama saying the word "period" for emphasis, and this is the first I've heard anyone mention noticing that he does that. I mean I'm sure he does sometimes, but it's a common enough idiom that the fact that you're noticing (and clearly annoyed by) it is I think maybe one of those things that is more about you than about him

Ev'ry mornin' at the web site you could see him arrive
He stood six foot six and weighed two forty five
Kinda broad at the shoulder and narrow at the hip
And everybody knew, ya didn't give no lip to Big Cortex

(Big Cortex, Big Cortex)
Big Bad Cortex
(Big Cortex)

Nobody seemed to know where Cortex called home
He just drifted into town and stayed all alone
He didn't say much, was kinda quiet and shy
And if you spoke at all, you just said, "Hi" to Big Cortex

Somebody said he came from New Orleans
Where he got in a fight over a Cajun Queen
And a crashin' blow from a huge right hand
Sent a Louisiana fellow to the Promised Land, Big Cortex

(Big Cortex, Big Cortex)
Big Bad Cortex
(Big Cortex)

Then came the day at the bottom of the site
When a thread went south and men started cryin'
MeFi'ers were prayin' and hearts beat fast
And everybody thought that they'd breathed their last, 'cept Cortex

Through the dust and the smoke of this man made hell
Walked a giant of a man the MeFi'ers knew well
Grabbed a saggin' timber, gave out with a groan
And like a giant Oak tree, he just stood there alone, Big Cortex

(Big Cortex, Big Cortex)
Big Bad Cortex
(Big Cortex)

And with all of his strength he gave a mighty shove
Then a MeFi'er yelled out, "There's a light up above"
And twenty men scrambled from a would-be grave
Now there's only one left down there to save, Big Cortex

With jacks and timbers they started back down
Then came that rumble way down in the ground
And then smoke and gas belched out of that site
Everybody knew it was the end of the line for Big Cortex

(Big Cortex, Big Cortex)
Big Bad Cortex
(Big Cortex)

Now they never reopened that worthless web site
They just placed a marble stand in front of... ite
These few words are written on that stand
At the bottom of this site lies a big, big man, Big Cortex

(Big Cortex, Big Cortex)
Big Bad Cortex
(Big Cortex)

(Big Cortex)
Big Bad Cortex

Yes, I probably should have simply asked if I was correct in inferring that something had been moderated out, and pointing out that I would have thought the thread might have included a mention of the President's famous recent use of the word given the wide-ranging nature of threads hereabouts.

I get that even absent an agenda, comments that don't meet a certain seriousness threshold frequently are moderated, and I'm fine with that. I also have observed that on any site, not just this one, that threshold is higher when the opinion being forwarded is unpopular. I was merely curious about what happened here and so I asked.

Yes, yes, of course, the most logical explanation for seeing something here you don't like, or not seeing something you expect to see, is always "there must be an agenda!" and not "I wonder if my assumptions about this issue might not be accurate?".

I've probably told this story before but many moons ago I used to be in charge of a fairly active forum. I got this obscenity filled email from a guy summed up as Y U CLOS MY THREAD. I was puzzled and sent him a link to the still-open but terrible thread he'd made that no one was posting in. I immediately got back an "AHA! Clearly you re-opened the thread when I got you at your cunning game." Again puzzled, I consulted our moderation logs and found no, nobody had even touched the thread because it was a bad thread but not rule-breaking and it was swiftly buried in the front page churn, and told him as such. I checked the forum and found him going on a rampage about corrupt mods and the usual BS and promptly banned him so he could cool down. I got another email accusing me of somehow hacking the server to delete the evidence of the server logs of me closing his thread.

So, just to recap, the following was a plausible scenario:
-I read an inoffensive but dumb thread
-I decided to close it because of my agenda
-Immediately called on my villainy, I backpedaled and re-opened the thread
-Then I promptly hacked into the server somehow and erased all evidence of this deed
-I also somehow erased all evidence of my hacking into the webserver so our web guy and IT team would never find out
-Even though I was the only one that cared about the forums
-And if I had actually closed the thread, nobody would've given a shit because my entire job was moderating the forums

But "Oh I guess I made a bad thread" was, of course, totally implausible.

I think my favorite thing about it is watching the evolution of the dipshit pun names from things that sound sort of like the original pun to something that the commentor probably thought sounded clever in their head. Like, it started with Obummer and then we got to Obozo, and at least Bozo starts with a B, I guess, and then eventually you're reading the comments on some article (my first mistake, yes, I know), and someone can't help but mention how Odumbass is curiously silent on Benghazi.

Baradict Obamabatch.

All I can think of is there should be a tumblr of otters that look like punctuation.

This thread is so stupid it should be killed, stuffed, and placed in a museum as a testament to the great follies of history.

Seriously, this is the worst thread ever. This thread is metafilter's smallpox blanket. If we don't quarantine it it could infect and dilute other good threads.

Love you guys.

I can posture food in here too if it looks like this thread is in danger of going too well.

Yeah, if you thought something was missing in a thread, I don't know why you wouldn't just say it: "How about that Obama, always saying "Period.," right?" That seems like the more straightforward response.

Just had a look on like for a "days since last accident" sign generator and couldn't find one that would let me create "Seconds since last deletion."

You can imagine where it goes from here. The cabal is fixed.

It was broken? Was it fixed using goose entrails? Do you need a whole goose worth of entrails, or do they work holistically?

I'm not supposed to be talking about these things, am I?

This thread is missing the real conspiracy, which is the mods' blatant pro-Iowa, pro-food agenda being pushed hard in the next thread down. Do I need to yell wake up sheeple or something?

Actually entrails work homeopathically, so you only need a little bit -- about the same amount as a smear of fried chicken livers served on a cracker by your grandmother, in fact.

Metafilter Network Inc. has secretly been purchased by a joint venture of the Iowa Farm Bureau, the Iowa Cattlemen's Association, Grinnell College and the Greater Des Moines Convention & Visitors Bureau. Over the next weeks and months, you will gradually see more and more Iowa-related content. Mod-controlled sockpuppets will start asking questions on AskMe like "now that I'm back home in New York, where can I get some of that great Iowa beef that I enjoyed during my recent vacation in Des Moines?" An upcoming FPP about photographs of the bridges of Madison County, Iowa will inexplicably win the best post contest. The next podcast will include a full half-hour of Jessamyn talking about Iowa. Going forward, anyone asking for advice on where to live will hear a lot about how Des Moines is a great place to raise your children.

Yes, I probably should have simply asked if I was correct in inferring that something had been moderated out, and pointing out that I would have thought the thread might have included a mention of the President's famous recent use of the word given the wide-ranging nature of threads hereabouts.

If it makes you feel better, you're not the first person this sort of thing has happened to. Every once in a while there's a post made to Meta asking "why hasn't a post about X topic or event been made to the Blue? I was looking forward to talking about it!" The usual response is, "well, you haven't made one yet." :)

As far as I can tell, the people in the media who have been focusing most on the President's verbal tics are conservative pundits. Which is par for the course: President Bush's verbal tics were picked apart mostly by lefties during his time in office. American Mefites skew moderate and a bit to the left, so the lack of a comments about "Period" might also be a sign many folks don't watch or listen to right wing pundits regularly.

For the record, I have a "WHERE THE HELL IS GRINNELL?/WHO THE HELL CARES?" t-shirt at home; however, I grew up in Minnesota, and as a result I am barred, as far as anyone knows, from holding a voting seat on any Iowa-based cabal. Not that there is one. Which there isn't. As far as you know

Big Cortex makes me think of something like Big Mary, the blowsy, knowing, cantankerous madame of an old west brothel, except he runs a brain-brothel, where intellectually deprived youths sit knees together and hands clasped in a red-velvet-draped lounge for the opportunity pony up a few bucks to discuss the effects of Hegelian romanticism on the early American episcopal churches or something.

Which, come to think of it, was the hook of a Woody Allen short story from the 60s, if I remember correctly. And which, come to think of it, is pretty much what Metafilter is, I guess.
