Mefites' Choice 2013 winners, Week Two December 16, 2013 8:56 AM   Subscribe

Another week of Mefites' Choice Awards, another bunch of fantastic posts flagged by mefites as, uh, fantastic? Phrasing's a bit clumsy, let's take take that again from the top and see if—what do you mean we're live? We're, ah—yes! Welcome to week two, come inside!

These are the three most-fantasticked posts of Week Two, Dec 8th-14th, with prizes from the wiki!

Hey, what's first-place winner cthuljew been up to lately, anyway? Oh, just compiling and posting July 30, 762 to February 13, 1258, a dense overview of the Islamic Golden Age, from the rise of the Abbasid Caliphate to the Mongol sacking of Baghdad and a whole heck of a lot in between. That sort of thing probably takes it out of a person; I think a nice bit of tea courtesy Alnedra is in order!

And while we're talking about historical eras and invading hordes and the rise and fall of an empire, close in second place is Pope Guilty's doting roundup of the anniversary and history and gaming legacy of the iD classic Doom, in Twenty Years of Ultra-Violence. More detail than you can shake a boomstick at! But since those nintendo genesis games rot the brain, he should probably get himself the book of his choice from bitter-girl.com's publishing company.

Staking out a strong third is daisyk, whose post People of Color are not an anachronism is a detailed showcase of the fantastic art history blog People of Color in European Art History (aka medievalpoc), which collects and comments on a fantastic array of historical art and about the issues of whitewashing and recontextualization and their systemic affect on modern perceptions of historical art. And since art begets maybe-sorta-art, cortex will draw daisyk exactly 1 square inch of anything she likes to do whatever she wants with.

And coming out of nowhere to snag the coveted Weird Internet Shit That Successfully Panders To Cortex's Obsession With Cookie Clicker bonus prize: Going To Maine's ferreting out of the oddball animated vocaloid music video Grandma's GIFT. Cookie post? Cookie prize! You get a Super Sample Pack of cookies from cortex via firei's Defcon YUM as seen over on ye olde Mefi Mall!

Great work all around, and more besides what's been mentioned here. Week Three is officially on; get out there and flag the posts you love as "fantastic"! And if you have some late-breaking inspiration for a weekly prize or a topic-specific prize you want to offer to some lucky mefite, it's not too late to put it on the wiki!

Oh, yay! Thank you, cortex and everyone! And thanks to everyone who voted for cthuljew, too, because I somehow missed that post and it looks like something special.

cortex, I would love it if you could draw me a one-square-inch interpretation of the word Katzenfabrik (= "cat factory" in German). I will use it as an icon on Twitter and such places. :D Cheers!

Woo! Thanks, y'all! I actually tried getting this post up last December, but stupid Dan Carlin had to release the last episode of Wrath of the Khans in January. So I put it off and put it off and all of a sudden it was December again and I figured now was a good time to finally force myself to organize all those blasted links.

Looking forward to delicious tea!

Also, I was hoping I'd get cortex's prize, which would be a guest spot on LARP Trek. A girl can dream.

Added this to the BestOf blog, if someone could wikify the winners from this week and last and put them up on the MeFiWiki, that would be terrific.

I updated the general wiki page for contests and I renamed the 2013 contest page to Contests/MeFitesChoice2013 from the generic Contests/MeFitesChoice.

And the winners have been wikified, in the style of the 2012 winners announcements on the wiki.

Looks good, thank you for doing all that. I might ditch the Ms/Mr stuff going forward since we have a lot of gender-non-specific and/or trans MeFites and it seems oddly binary and rigid for a site that's pretty tolerant of a lot of different forms of gender expression. Here are some other honorifics that might suffice.

Good call on the gendering of folks. I've amended this year's list to drop all that.

On the topic of honorifics, here is the Wikipedia page on Style (manner of address) with more examples and options.

I'd also like to say: I support large posts on significant periods in history. Kudos to cthuljew!

Hey, cthuljew, congratulations! I just Memailed you, do give me an address to send you the prize!

PopeG, I couldn't be happier with that fpp. When I finally joined metafilter this was going to be my first post topic but once I started collecting links and etc etc I realized it was far more work than I wanted to do. Seeing your effort put anything I had dreamed up in my mind to shame. I love that post so much. Thanks!
