Post Stuff, Win Games, Yay Hooray May 25, 2014 4:51 PM   Subscribe

Just wanted to let folks know that I'm running a weekly game giveaway over at Gamefilter for the next couple of months, so now's a great time to come hang out and get your feet wet there, if you're interested.

Every Saturday (Korea time -- Friday evening in North America) I'm giving away a game or games (generally in the form of Steam keys) to a randomly chosen user who has posted to the front page in the previous week.

Our first winner was juv3nal, and he got copies of Risen 2: Dark Waters, Sacred 2: Gold Edition, Saints Row 2, and Saints Row: The Third. If you already own the games you win (or don't want them), you can gift them to somebody else by passing on the keys, and I'm buying the games from Humble Bundle, so the money I'm spending goes directly to charity.

Membership over at Gamefilter doesn't require that you be a member at MefightClub, but if you enjoy games and gaming, it's highly recommended!

So come on over, and as always, share and enjoy!

Will my login for mefightclub work on Gamefilter?
posted by winna at 6:44 PM on May 25, 2014

Nope, they're separate sites and separate accounts (although there's massive overlap in membership, of course). I didn't want to force people to have accounts for different sites if they didn't want necessarily to, and MFC is private-ish while GFi is entirely public (other than private messages, of course), so they're somewhat different beasts.

Should only take about 45 seconds to sign up, though!

I can attest that getting free gaemz is pretty rad. I will note though (and I wasn't really trying too hard since I didn't already own any of them) that it seems like i could either gift on the whole bundle at once, or not at all (i.e. couldn't do it on a piecemeal basis). As far as I could tell anyways.

Yeah, no provision for piecemeal regifting if the games are part of a single bundle, unfortunately. I'm probably going to end up mixing and matching a bit in later weeks, though, so it may possible once in a while.

I tried to register a couple of times and it tells me my email addresses are banned by WangGuard. Note: I am not a Wang.

That's bad news indeed -- that means you're blacklisted somewhere on one of the blacklist providers out there. If you'd like to MeFiMail me the email you're using, I'll whitelist it and investigate a bit!

Unfortunate name, but extremely effective splogger-bot guardian, is the old Wang.

I've unflagged 3 account signups from yesterday that look like they might have been false positives, so if you had a problem, please try logging in. Many apologies, but automation is really my only option, and this is the first time I've had false positives among the dozens of spammers who are getting blocked every day.

Are electronic/computer games the sole emphasis of Gamefilter? I'm old and back in my day we played games with maps and counters from the likes of Avalon Hill, SPI, and Metagaming.

Nope, just like MefightClub itself, even though we tend to be mostly video game folks, any kind of gaming enthusiasm is absolutely encouraged. (We have busy groups of tabletop RPG players at MefightClub, for example, as well as discussions about analog gaming in general.)

Any interesting link about something gaming- but non-video-gaming-related is totally welcome for GFi.

I'm old

I'd be surprised if the average age of MFC members was very far south of 40. Hell, I'm almost 50. Old farts are the best farts.

So is something like my post today about Go and AI a good candidate for Gamefilter?

Absolutely!

I did read the About page, but can you give me the summary on what the difference is meant to be between the three (four?) MeFightClub sites, stavros?
posted by whir at 12:25 PM on May 27, 2014

Sure thing.

MefightClub is a semi-closed forum (anyone can sign up, but you need to sign up to read) for us to hang out and talk games or whatever, but mostly games. It's about 3000 members now. It's forum-structured, so discussions get bumped on activity and so on. It was originally for MeFites, but we have a decent percentage of non-Metafilter members who've joined up over the years, too. It's all about having an adult, tolerant, non-sexist, non-whateverist, funtimes gaming community vibe.

FullGlassEmptyClip is the blog for MFC members to Write Stuff About Games if they feel inclined. It also served as a gaming linkblog until I relaunched GFi, but now it's mainly about the longformish piece or reviews or whatever. Not too many people avail themselves of the platform though, so it tends to be mostly me and a few other folks who write there, occasionally. I threw it open to all MeFi members as a place to write about games a wee while back, but not too many folks followed through.

Gamefilter is open to all, including MFC members of course, and is basically a Metafilter clone with wonderchicken sauce. All the public-facing aspects are readable by anyone, but you need to sign up to post or comment, as with MeFi. It's all about the quality links and the filtering and stuff.

Ludic Research Labs is a one-off joke, basically. I haven't really decided if I'm going to do anything productive with it, so: a semi-elaborate jape.

I have some games for you, stav. I'll try gifting them through Steam in a bit. Use them however you'd like.

Thanks, man! If they're codes, maybe just email them to me (@mefightclub.com), and I can add them to a future prize package...

And I should say as well that it's been really great, all the help and support and suggestions I've been receiving from lots of people with this (sort of) new project -- it really does warm the cockles of my old chickeny heart.

It's always a little scary to be sincere about stuff on the internet, but I really do hope GFi's a success this time around.

If you do too, to whatever degree, please do come and post and comment. A site that's built on (ewww) user-generated content has to have that happening, or it just won't clear the first hurdle. I'm trying hard every day to post lots of interesting stuff, and I appreciate massively other folks who are posting too, and of course this weekly giveaway is a transparent attempt to create a little bit of fun-incentive (funcentive.... ewww, again) to prime the pump.

I know that it's an uphill climb given that gaming-related posts are a lot more common here at MeFi than they used to be, and there's a much much bigger audience here to read and comment on them, but the only way for GFi to grow and get some happy traction is well, for it to grow, and for folks who visit to have the feeling that there is an audience of engaged people there with them.

Hmm, any Big Piggies enthusiasts in the hizz-ouse? I'll have to check. My son plays the hell out of it and I finally installed it on the PC and got sucked in a bit. I like to make mobile rocket booster platforms and then launch a TNT-riddled missile into the air controlling its trajectory with thrusters. LOL.

Oh, just for future reference (I've added a note on the register page as well) -- Dr. Zira was getting knocked back because the automated splogger defense tool didn't like the fact that he (or she) was using a VPN during registration. For account registration, if you can, just disable your VPN or proxy, and then once you're in, you can go back to using it as normal.

If it's not possible to connect directly for registering purposes, you can get in touch with me with an email/username/password and I'll manually set you up with pleasure.
