Happy birthday Mefi Music! June 29, 2014 9:52 PM   Subscribe

Back in 2006, the cover was lifted on the version of Metafilter Music we all know and love! I wanted to wish it happy birthday, and post a torrent for the songs from 2013!

Here's the 2013 torrent, weighing in at 451 songs and 2.8 gigabytes. The thread for the original torrent announcement, from 2010, is still open, and it contains torrents for previous years.

Sorry in advance about all the aimless space jams.

At least two of your songs made my Mefi Music Podcast, Devils Rancher.

There's a ton of people to thank for the torrent, by the way; all the musicians, encouragement from Jessamyn and cortex, and not_on_display, who has helped out quite a bit and nudged me to do this. I'm so grateful to everyone that I'm sure I can't do it justice.

I am seeding all of the torrents, so come one come all!

I just lurk on MeFi Music but I'm always impressed by the amount of talent there. Thanks for this Pronoiac!

I just lurk on MeFi Music

It'd be great if more people did a little more commenting, though. MeFiMu can sure seem like a ghost town sometimes.

It'd be great if more people did a little more commenting, though.

I commented a little early on when I started visiting it, but I can't shake the feeling that I don't know enough about what I'm talking about compared to the regulars. It reminds me of being in guitar shops when I was a teenager and the assistants resolutely ignored me because Girl, and just continued playing Stairway To Heaven. (But this is definitely my own problem and not because of the attitude of anyone there.)

I commented a little early on when I started visiting it, but I can't shake the feeling that I don't know enough about what I'm talking about compared to the regulars.

I understand how someone might feel that way, but even among the "regulars" there's a pretty wide range of folks, and by that I mean that there are those who use musicological terms in their commentary and those who don't, and all varieties in between. It's all good, as Bob Dylan says. I don't think those of us who post our material to MeFiMu particularly expect *expert* commentary, or commentary that meets some high criterion of musical knowledge or music history knowledge or anything like that. So, I'd urge anyone and everyone to comment to the best of your abilities! Just a "wow, cool tune, I dug it" sort of thing, or a "this reminds me of _______" sort of thing, or "I'm not quite feeling this, I wonder if it could maybe use more accordion…" kind of thing.

I can state with some degree of confidence that the musicians who post to MeFiMu will appreciate and be grateful for whatever honest comments anyone might care to make about their music, and I honestly believe that would include comments that could be classified as constructive criticism.

Ugh I gotta get my ass in gear. at least 4 tracks I really really want to do something with; all stalled due ot my creative block...

Even I sometimes hesitate to comment, i know, I'm bad. Because I've posted a few tracks there over the years I feel like I should do more but I always sorta feel like all I have to say is "WOW HEY THATS GUD" because I am one of those folks who doesn't know squat about music except what I likes.

YAY!

Happy Birthday MeFiMu :)

And yes - to any and all who feel like they can't comment for any reason, ALWAYS COMMENT.

Musicians need both appreciation and criticism in order to thrive. Even if you can only provide one of those, please deliver it to us in the largest quantity you can afford.

And seconding above - no technical knowledge is required for valid comment. If your criticism amounts to "I couldn't hear the vocal well enough" it's still helpful to be pointed out. And if your appreciation simply amounts to "I like this", that's bread and butter to the common or garden musician :)

Music started up about a year after I first got in a band, and it has been a fantastic place to share and learn from others. I love Music Talk too, I've gotten so many great insights from the converation there.

Thanks for putting together the torrent.

I shouldn't talk, because I've been so absent from MefiMu lately, but I wish there was a way to jumpstart the flow of listening and commenting, since it's such a great subsite. I recently looked at it, after a long time away, and I remember an average of more comments per song a few years ago.

Is there a torrent of it all up to now?

Nope! I think they're plenty big already. I wouldn't be able to host the whole shebang if they were all in one, and I'm pretty sure other people would complain too.

Yay music! I haven't participated as much lately as I would like, been going through a long creative dry spell. But I hope to start working on things again soon!

Also, I have the original torrent, but haven't been able to seed in the past couple years (gotta keep the electric bill as low as possible).

I have to admit I never visit MeFi Music. I will try to remedy that in the future. Happy birthday.

Is there a torrent of it all up to now?

It is all available in five parts:

The first 5000 songs, about 22.4 GB, up to Late 2010 (torrent tracker file is zipped; unzip to get the torrent tracker file.)

Late 2010, 1.22 GB (tracker is also zipped)

2011, complete, 3.71 GB (also zipped)

2012, complete, 3.29 GB (ready to roll)

2013, complete, 2.88 GB (ready to roll)

I am seeding all of these.

I had to turn off secure browsing on MetaFilter to download the torrent files. The links are trying to connect to Pronoiac's server using https.
