FanFare: Slings & Arrows? July 11, 2014 8:17 PM   Subscribe

The FPP I made on Slings & Arrows (probably some spoilers there if you haven't seen the show yet) was pretty well received, so who's interested in working our way through the series?

I'm posting this to:

- gauge interest
- if there's enough interest, set up a schedule
- decide whether we want to watch through as if it's all new, or include spoilers of future episodes

So, who's interested, and how would you like to go about it?

I am interested. I've heard lots of good things about the series and have been meaning to check it out. For me, it would be brand new, although it doesn't strike me as the kind of show where spoilers would be a big deal (I could be wrong of course).

I'm totally not in a "let me find a new TV series to binge on" headspace, but… Paul Gross? In a non-Northern Exposure role? Hmm… interesting!

If it helps, Lexica, it's only 18 episodes across three seasons.

Oooh, me, me! (*jumping up and down, waving hand*) I mean, I've watched it, um, multiple times, but it would be great fun to rewatch with Mefites, and I'd be glad to abide by whatever is decided in terms of spoilers. (Though, as Falconetti says, it's not a show where much of anything hinges on spoilable suspense/plottiness, which is one reason I love it so.)

Yeah there's only really the one, and it happens in S1E1. But I'm fine with whatever the majority of people watching want to do, spoilers-in or spoilers-out, though I'd lean towards spoilers-out for those who haven't yet seen the show.

I was kinda thinking we could do three episodes a week, and conclude the entire watch in six weeks. Seems brisk enough to retain interest while leaving enough time to discuss and dissect. But again, I'll bow to the majority. I'm just offering to make the initial posts (with suitably funny synopses) and facilitate the whole thing.

And perhaps we could adopt a hybrid spoiler/no spoiler approach: no spoilers on a given episode until we've moved on to the next?

Either way, just facilitating. You folks tell me what you want and I'll post appropriately once we work it out.

Also in posting this I realized: is it perhaps a good idea to create a FanTalk subsite to go with FanFare for organizing these things, instead of clogging up MeTa?

(also can we go with the amazing suggestion made in another thread, about making rebeccapurple FanFare's background?)

(This is a post aimed at mods, not to derail the conversation about The Best Canadian Series Ever Made)

Believe something along those lines is under discussion, although I don't have details or an ETA or anything.

I've been interested in both participating in FanFare and watching Slings and Arrows, so I'd definitely be down for this. Any spoiler policy is fine by me, but I'd prefer two, rather than three, episodes a week.

I'm on board.

I just watched episode 1 in a segmented set of YouTube videos. Is there a better streaming source for them for someone living in the US?

Two eps a week seems perfectly reasonable to me if everyone else is in agreement. Maybe like, Wednesdays and Sundays or something?

YouTube has sucky quality for S&A. It's available both on Amazon Instant and Netflix depending on where you live. It's also torrentable if you lean that way, but as a Canadian interested in supporting CanCon, I'd personally ask that you just buy the set (it's cheap as hell) on Amazon. But that's my personal feeling, and you do what's best for your financial situation.

It doesn't seem to be on US Netflix, unfortunately. Amazon instant seems to have it for sale for $15 per season. iTunes has them for $10 / season. If I've had enough wine one night while trying to make the youtube links work I'm sure I'll end up shelling out for the good versions.

This should happen. I've only seen season 1, but it was a delight.

Space Coyote, at $10 per season you're paying $1.33ish per episode. Trust me when I say you will get your moneys' worth.

I'm in! Wish there was a notification flag for fanfare so I could be reminded when a show I like has posted a recap (feeds pony with carrots and sets it freeeee)

I've been told that one should refamiliarize themselves with a specific Shakespeare play for each season one watches. Any opinions on this?

Just watched the S1E1 &S1E2 recently, so this sounds like good fun for me.

I've got s01 but never got around to watching it so I'm on board. I avoided the FPP for that reason, 'oh no! I'm just about to start that....'

I don't think you need to have read the Shakespeare plays, but having seen Slings & Arrows all the way through two and a half times or so, I'm kind of excited to go through it and read the plays at the same time.

(S1: Hamlet; S2: Macbeth; S3: King Lear)

Another vote for 2 episodes a week rather than 3. People looking for ways to see the show without buying anything might try your local library.

Totally on board. I've watched the first two seasons and A+++++ would totally watch again, and more!

You all made me curious about the show, and since Metafilter also convinced me to watch Orphan Black - thanks Metafilter, I am also in. I can confirm that I checked and that my local library does seem to have all the episodes. (so thanks for that reminder, too, I keep forgetting that as a resource, despite the fact that I go to the library every week)

Okay, so it looks like there's definite interest. I'd like to propose this:

1) Two episodes per week, for a nine week total.
2) Therefore two threads per week. I'm thinking Wednesdays and Sundays. Watch the episodes of the week whenever you like, and I'll make a post between 7-8pm (Eastern time) on FanFare. (I think a live rewatch would be way too hard to coordinate across so many people and so many timezones).
3) Let's go spoiler-free. Discuss current and past episodes only, not future ones, since there's already a couple of people here who haven't yet watched the show.

Thoughts? And thoughts on when we want to start? I'm thinking we'll want to wait a couple of weeks to allow everyone who wants to participate to obtain the series in whatever way they wish.

All of your proposals sound good. Is Sunday, August 3rd too soon?

I discovered Slings and Arrows through Metafilter, and have given the discs as gifts, loaned out my own copy, recommended it constantly to friends/acquaintances even when parameters have been slightly askew because it is BEST. Slings and Arrows is BEST!
I'd love a rewatch, it's been awhile.
