Does anyone still play Kingdom of Loathing? October 16, 2014 4:26 AM   Subscribe

I've been getting back into Kingdom of Loathing recently, and I wanted to play with MeFites! Adventurers are us!

I know the game is pretty long in tooth at this point, but I have been enjoying it, and wanted to know if any MeFites still play, or are interested in playing. Is there a MeFite clan? Could we make one?

I'm Toeplitz over there. Thanks!

My name here was originally my name there but I haven't played in years. I was in deezil's clan for a while (as a multi). I wonder if I remember my login . . .

Its been so long since I logged in (8 years, maybe?) that I don't think I remember what clans were. I'll need to have a dig around, and make Mingus the Damp active again.

I'm Conlang over there! For those of you who haven't logged in in a while, all the classes and some of the quests have been revamped over the last year or two (I think? I've only been around for a year), so you might find interesting new content and skills.

I'm not sure a Mefi clan would be of much use unless people are drowning in meat, however; from what I've seen of clans - which is admittedly not much because clans = strangers and strangers = scary and me = not joining scary things - their main use is dungeons (cost assloads of meat to set up and re-set up) , VIP rooms (linked to an old IOTM and costs assloads of meat to set up), and stashes (requires players to have good stuff they're willing to give up to the stash). If I'm wrong about, that, though, a Mefi clan would be awesome!

Oh wow. KoL. I never played multi, always solo.

What happens if you get killed playing multi? Do you start over from scratch? Lose whatever inventory you had on you at the time?

unless people are drowning in meat

This already sounds like something I'd enjoy, and I realize that this is drowning as a metaphor, but if "drowning in meat" was a literal state in gameplay, I'd be even more tempted to sign up.

I currently have about 500,000 meat sitting around, which is not nearly enough to buy any of the clan dungeons, but is more than enough to buy some clan rec room furniture.

I still play sometimes, as soelo and Clubberella. I have 4 other accounts from the pre-ascension days so that I could play all 6 classes, but those don't get played very often.

I really enjoyed the Avatar of Jarlsberg path and Boris was fun, too. Recent changes include a customizable menu (similar to the combat menu but for locations and settings/chat type links) and a decent mobile interface for smartphone adventuring.

I haven't played in the past few months, but I always plan to go back.

I run a clan that is pretty much deserted - it only had my RL friends and family in it and they all abandoned the game ages ago.

If someone wants to join a clan, you are welcome to join mine. I'm Wimsey in the game and the clan is Denver Ducis (all my KoL stuff is based around the Lord Peter Wimsey novels)

Things have changed a lot; all of the quests have been revamped, all of the classes just got two skills per level, ascension works differently, every season has its own special restriction (my favorite is probably Zombie Hunter). It's worth logging in and resetting your ascension if you haven't played in a while.

Already having Hobopolis and a slime tube or Dreadsylvania is a plus, so instead of making a new clan, we should join an already existing one (many have been mentioned upthread). Also, you can whitelist users so they can join another clan and then come back to your clan without having to be approved again.

Seconding the KOL Wiki for help in figuring out what to do and how to play with others. I have not done much in the clan dungeons, but it sounds like people playing at the same time can help each other out.

Also, there are many buffbots, chefbots, boozebots and at one time there was a wadbot, but I think it is defunct.

Kingdom of Loathing is something I'm glad exists, and I hope it lasts a hundred years, but I don't have the time or energy necessary to really play it the way it deserves to be played at the moment. (I mean, the game has an entire subdungeon that's nothing but a collection of Nethack in-jokes, how cool is that?)

One of the things I like about it is that you don't have to log in every day. If you do, you go faster, but there are very few things that need to be tended to every single day. The mushroom field is one example.

My multi has the same name as my account here. ;)

I originally started playing KoL back in 2004, and joined (and lead) one of the better-known clans. I got back into the game last year and have been cranking out 3-day HR runs. Eek.

I'd love to get a whitelist to a MeFi clan if y'all are hanging out.

Regarding tips, if you're getting Mr. A-level equipment, I'd suggest picking up a VIP pass and getting a whitelist to "Bonus Adventures From Hell" (BAFH). Amazing bang for the buck.

If you've been away from the game for a while, there's an awful lot of new content and quest and skill revamps. There's amazing depth in the game with lots of hilarious writing.

Also, if you are the only active member of a clan, you may want to make a multi and transfer ownership to that account. I can help sort that out if you're having trouble (or if you're otherwise trying to figure out the residual value of clan furniture and such).

posted by Hold your seahorses at 7:40 PM on October 17, 2014

There are things in basements that take a lot of killing, and sometimes require cooperation. You can, for instance, get stuck in the sewers and either be rescued by a fellow clannie, or spend ten turns working your way out.

Clan dungeon goodies can be quite good, much of the stuff from Hobopolis and the Slime Tube is power 200 stuff, with extra powers. The aforementioned KoLWiki can tell you more, if you wish to be spoiled.

Besides the clan dungeons, there's also the Clan VIP Lounge. The Lounge Key currently costs around 15 million meat (in other words, slightly more than a Mr. Accessory, which you can purchase for $10).

The Lounge gives you access to some of the best available buffs in the game. Many of the Lounge items were Items of the Month available for purchase previously. So a few months ago, there was the Clan Speakeasy, which gave three really good drinks a day. (One drink, the Lucky Lindy, reveals your semirare counter for 1 drunk.)

Although all of that furniture is ridiculously expensive now, you can get it for free via a whitelist to BAFH. The exception is the Clan Hot Dog Stand, which, since it requires the clan to stock consumables, suffers from a bit of the Tragedy of the Commons, at least as far as BAFH goes.

Regarding chat -- there's that whole thing on the right-hand pane. (Hopefully the new players can all successfully pass the literacy test.) The channel /clan has hopefully obvious uses. There's also a walkie-talkie (cheap!) which you can use to create a channel for cross-clan semi-private stuff.

An important note for people who haven't played in a while: the Hermit doesn't take the Hermit Permit anymore so you only need one per ascension.

I'm PseudoKu the sauceror. I've played on and off for a while. I think this is the fifth character I've had since they kept getting wiped for inactivity. So I have no idea what a lot of the new stuff is.

I still have no clue what I'm doing, but I'm having fun floundering around. I'm going to delve into the wiki, and once I'm slightly more clued up, will be attempting to join the Denver Ducis.

I want to join the party! GirlThing reporting for action with apparently 4 million meat. I haven't logged in in six years. Nuts.

I'm Spatular and I haven't played since like 2008... basically wandering around right now, figuring out what's new. Joined the Denver Ducis - thanks!

I remembered I needed to change into my rollover gear, and then I remembered I used to have an actual game workflow (and that was before I ever played turn) and maybe that's why I stopped playing because it was like a job. I don't have the energy for that any more.

(Meaning I won't play that way, not that I won't play at all.)

KolMafia actually automates a bunch of the "work" which is nice, although I now have about 86 disassembled 10 lead clovers because it clears the hermit out every day.
posted by Elementary Penguin at 5:03 AM on October 19, 2014

I meant to add that I was using KolMafia but I don't keep it as automated as most but...I just ascended so I'm a total n00b for now in Ronin and with almost no stuff so forget everything else I said! (Thanks to snarkypants for the advice!)

For everyone who's starting out totally fresh, like I did, I'm putting extra quest-helpful low-level items in the stash as I finish said quest.

kalessin, I think you can search for clan names from the clan district, or you can click on Julney's info (or any clan member's info)and click the clan link from there. There are some goodies you can get from the clan and once a year (I think?) you can buy a VIP membership from Mr. store.

I've been checking into the clan chat but haven't seen anyone yet.

Logged into my rather old and disused account, which I apparently stopped using after ascending once - calliope_333, applied to join Julney's clan.

Also KoLMafia doesn't seem to work properly on Yosemite, even with an older JVM, so I can wait on that.

kalessin, I used to handle all the mac/java issues for KoLMafia before I stopped playing for a few years, but I still know the build system really well. Let me know what build and what version of java you have and I can look into it. you can either me-mail or k-mail me (Darwinlet on KoL).

However, Top-of-Tree works for me on Yosemite (and did throughout the betas). OTOH, my command line for starting KoLMafia is "cd ~/projects/kolmafia && ant daily && java -jar ~/projects/kolmafia/dist/*.jar" so I may be more obsessive than most about getting the latest build every night before I start running.

Oh wow.

Well, I am CancerMan (#1745943), and while I have been logging in daily, I've just been grabbing whatever Meat is available from various bonuses. Like others, KoL has taken too much of my morning and I don't really "play" anymore.

It's a shame, too, because I had a whole spreadsheet developed to assist me in pulling the right equipment from Hangk's at the right times for quests. Now I'm sure that spreadsheet is woefully out of date.

At least my combat macros are still in place.

Anyone who joined the clan: The clan Message Board is a forum where we can discuss the game, if you want. Once people get adjusted it would be fun to try one of the clan basement dungeons, but it would be better to organize it on KoL than here.

Randy Panda (#401417) here. I've been very casually playing since... crap, 2005? Can that be right? Only 33 ascensions, though. I did set up my own clan, the Groucho Marxists, but I wouldn't let anyone else in to it (heh). Maybe it's time I tried playing well with others?

I've been playing for 10 years(on and off, I'm a very casual player.) I'm Suzika in game if you want to say hi.

In fact, I go to KoLumbus every year (it is a weekend long KoL party in Columbus, Ohio.)

Oh man, I wonder if I can remember what email I was using back then. I hadn't thought about it in years. It was so clever.

Hmm, I sort of quit because the Money Making Game taught me I had addictive tendencies, but I still log on occasionally. Apparently I last updated my profile 8 years ago. Anyway, larky lion joins the clan fun, here we go.
