Metafilter in the AV Club December 16, 2014 12:42 PM   Subscribe

JHarris's epic licensed character Christmas specials post made the Onion A.V. Club. It would have been nice if they had mentioned JHarris and not just "Metafilter" but eh.

Thanks for being not the AV Club, metafilter! I love reading threads without comments about masturbating to 80s cartoon characters.

Seconded, ChuraChura. Yikes.

Well, it's nice for one's work to be recognized. I'll pass this news along to my friend who pointed me to the Wacky Wallwalker thing.

Never read the comments. Not even this one.

I've seen some pretty insightful and humorous stuff in the AV Club comments. But they definitely have a much higher tolerance for creeps and assholes.

AV Club is probably midpoint between YouTube and Metafilter comments.

Some* days I'm thankful that Disqus or Facebook comments or whatever it is never seem to load for me!

The "Great Job, Internet!" section of the A.V. Club is basically just "Hey, let's copy MetaFilter!," so it's kind of weird to see them actually copping to that every now and then, as they did when they linked to Room 641-A's Halloween specials post and jrossi4r's Halloween costumes post.

FWIW, "Great Job, Internet!" is unanimously loathed by the A.V. Club's userbase, who prefer thought-out reviews of pop culture over links to random internet stuff. So, JHarris, take the fact that most of the comments aren't some variation on "Oh, fuck off, internet" as very high praise.

I keep reading that as Wacky Wallander, which would make an AWESOME holiday special.

Tried to let it go, but the reality is 80s cartoons are the best.

It's interesting that you attributed the post to the Onion A.V. Club instead of the author, Rob Dean.

Turnabout and fair play and all that.

The meta is strong with this stuff.

Yeah, fair enough, although I'm reasonable certain JHarris put *a lot* more effort into what he created.

True, and I know it's not really the same thing since the A.V. Club has a much higher degree of responsibility for that page than MetaFilter does for this. But they're both examples of a widespread habit of crediting articles to the publisher rather than the author.

I like Daring Fireball's take on this. Gruber doesn't give credit to those who don't. It gets comedic at times.

A bigger peeve of mine is when sites don't link to the content at all. You'll read a news story and it will credit another website, and even quote from that site, but it's like they don't understand hypertext. CNN does this entirely too often and is one of the reasons I quit visiting that site on any kind of regular basis.
