This sounds like one of those made up hallmark holidays they invented just to sell mugs.

And boy, with all the MeTa drama going on lately, it sure seems like they could use a reminder that they're appreciated.

Thanks, mods!

Aw, this was a nice Meta to post. I'll jump right on that bandwagon and crack the whip for the ponies to fly on this one! You couldn't ask for a more skilled set of fine folks to look after the community. It amazes me all the time.

That's great. We appreciate y'all for sure.

We've got our very own day for this anyway, but yeah, we can't over-appreciate the mods, frankly.

While we're appreciatin': every time I use the contact form I'm astonished by how quickly I get a response email. Like wow. Even the ones where I say "not urgent" or "no need to reply, just letting you know".

It's a simple little thing, those "thanks, we'll take a look" replies. But that they happen, that they happen so fast, that they're so obviously not auto-generated -- really gives a feeling of personal engagement.

The moderator:

A feature of Viennese (and some other) pianos from roughly 1780 onward well into the 19th century, by means of which thin tabs of cloth were inserted between the hammers and the strings to create a softer, more muffled tone. Some researchers think that when Schubert wrote ppp in his piano music, he was invariably indicating the use of the moderator. The Moderator soon got company of other stops and gadgets. There was the una corda; a bassoon stop in which rolls of parchment were brought in contact with the strings to make a buzzing sound; and the noisy and unmusical Turkish Music with cymbals and drums, operated by a foot pedal.

Agency has changed over time (Bruno Latour would be so happy). Now the moderators, apart from sometimes perhaps still damping a discussion, are themselves the ones wielding the hammer, pulling the strings (even single ones), creating a buzz, and operating cymbals and drums.

Yay, then!

thank you for all the hard work and tough decisions you have to make, lovely mods. i worry maybe my meta pondering implies i don't think you're fantastic, so in case i've been unclear--i think you are all wonderful, patient, thoughtful people with the amazing talent of putting your ego/self aside for the sake of what's best for the community, that rare thing where when people are distressed at you you listen and think about it and sometimes change your mind on stuff, and at least always explain your line of reasoning. amazing. cheers.

BTW I recently dropped my Aperture Science mug on the floor and shattered it, recommendations welcome for a new vaguely dorky mug!

mathowie: I used to hear this mentioned all over Twitter and Facebook in the past.

I blame the fall of moderated spaces, or at least the rise of the faceless moderator who manage communities from behind curtains, never to be seen by the community they moderate.

Thanks again for keeping MetaFilter a community blog, complete with moderators who value and are valued in the community.

Community Manager Day was a day off for me, and I've been trying to do a better job of taking my days off actually off some days, so I spent it ignoring the internet, getting my tires on my car fixed up, making arrangements with flooring contractors, and then zooming around the galaxy for a while in Elite:Dangerous and blowing up space pirates. Which is I guess a kind of galactic community management.

Anyway, it says something about Metafilter that on my days off I often tend to find myself thinking "okay, yeah, but I could be working...". Weird as it can be and grumpy as I occasionally am at the rougher edges of stuff, I really like this job and this place and am glad we've got such a connected and thoughtful community.

I'm a bit late to the party, but I'll say this: I've been a reader of Metafilter for years.

So recently, I thought: hell, I should join and support it, both with contributions to conversations and a few bucks a month. I can't begin to repay what I've gotten out of Metafilter over the years.

That's it's such a great, civil and interesting community is a testament to the mods. It's a beautiful, fragile thing that you handle deftly and with care. I really appreciate your work.
