boobies and boobies and gay bashing... oh my! are we living through a mefi nightmare?

Is mlang posting too much to MetaTalk?
posted by mathowie (staff) at 11:55 AM on July 18, 2002

Oh, I don't know. The first link is about T.A.T.U., the pseudo-lesbian rock band, and even though there were some "hell-yeah"s in there, the thread was mostly about market and "girl bands." It never got really nasty.

The second link is about the topless carwash, and I'm sorry...that's just funny. Again, the discussion seems to be mostly about why we consider breasts taboo. Not exactly the highest level of debate, but it's not all "YeeHaw! Titties!" either.

And as for the third, I think "gay bashing" is a little strong.

Ooops, Matt slipped in there between me and mlang.

I was kidding, but I don't think "gay bashing" is too strong of a phrase to describe the focus on the family's stupid assertion that gay = pedophile.

I agree with that, but I don't think it was presented as "gay bashing."

Okay, I don't think it was "overtly" gay bashing. Maybe it was implied.
posted by ColdChef at 12:12 PM on July 18, 2002

you may have been kidding, matt, but you were also correct. this post was partly a joke, to provide symmetry with my cheerleading post below. but it would have best served as a post within the thread below. and no, none of these threads are that bad (or at least, they're not as bad as the other threads are good), but the boobiestalk is embarrassing to me as a member of this community... and it does add to the impression of metafilter as a boyzone. and the bbbsa post becomes particularly bad when you factor in eas98's post, which was nicely refuted by dijry (using my patented technique, i might add).

ok, i'll stop procrastinating and write my philosophy paper now.

mathowie: Is mlang posting too much to MetaTalk?

mlang has posted 12 threads to MetaTalk. 9 were made in July. Yes, 3 were bug reports, but to answer your question Matt, yes, especally when the front page only shows the last 5 comments. no offense, mlang

Also, I thought we were limited to one posting/day, or is that just MetaFilter?

The 'm' in 'mlang' must stand for Miguel.

Man. Let me try this one more time:

When I read the "Focus on the Family" post, what I got was "Hey, look at this" not "Hey, look what those sneaky homosexuals are trying to do".
posted by ColdChef at 12:21 PM on July 18, 2002

um, didn't mlang just herald a mefi golden age, and now, literally five minutes later, he's getting out the black crepe? huh?
posted by donkeyschlong at 12:22 PM on July 18, 2002

Mlang invoked the b-word again: Boyzone. Simian phallocentric patriarchal oppressors unite!

Who wrote the "bad timing" thing? I didn't see it pulled from the article. That phrase attempts to link pedophilliac priests with "active" gay Biggerbrother/sisters. The "side note" of why hasn't this been widely reported is suspect. It obviously not been reported because no source is given in the article. In general people on metafilter talk about things being not widely enough reported when there is some sort of injustice. That someone would think this article is worth wider audience is suspect.

Oh for joy and the glory of the sheer novelty of it, it does feel well; this clean, intoxicating off-the-hook sensation!

Okay, I TOTALLY missed that. But I can sorta see it now.

Yeah, that's a bit more iffy, but if you add it all up, it does have the stank of bigotry. Thanks for the clarification.

mlang, as your NA sponsor, I demand that you go and take a nice walk. Think of your higher power. You don't want to do this to yourself. Did you call that prescription-signing quack again? Give me his name. There is no call for people like that in the medical profession.

The "Gay Big Brothers" post seems the same as the "Muslims worry me" post from a couple of weeks ago: it's an offensive lie that is effectively refuted in the thread.

I know that "a foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds," but I can't see removing one post and leaving the other.

all this boob-induced knuckle-dragging is quite amusing considering last night's new South Park was about the exact same thing. Anyone see it? All the boys regressed to Kubrickian apeman behavior when a girl in the class got her breasts.

Must be a slow day at FARK.

I participated in that boobie thread, and got thrown all around the room for my opinions. I have since changed my mind, and now feel that everyone should walk around completely nekkid while waving a Gay Pride banner.
POWER TO THE CARWASH GIRLS!

That's the beauty and brutality of MetaFilterian logical consistency: either you're for full public nudity or burqas. There is no middle ground.

And here I was thinking it was one of the best days for metafilter in quite a while...

I just posted a pic of my own (partially) visible boobie in the car wash thread. Go look, before mathowie takes it down (if he does).

Boobie boobie boobie boobie boobie!

Actually, breasts are pretty damned interesting, but for nourishing and scientific reasons more than jiggly wow-look-at-those-nipples reasons, imho.

As of July 11th, at least one Wiccan supports the choice to blog veiled.

"Die Verwendung von .frau-Domains befreit Frauen von sexueller Belaestigung sowie der Konfrontation mit Pornografie im Internet."

(The use of .female domains liberates women from sexual pestering as well from confrontations with pornography on the Internet.) It took 9 months gestation for the new domain, which received seed money from the Green Party's Heinrich Boll Foundation.

Boobiestalk is not embarrassing, to most people*. Boobies exist, and are not embarrassing (to most people*). Talk exists, and is not embarrassing (to most people*). Draw your own conclusions.

beth, never discount "jiggly wow-look-at-those-nipples reasons". They're as valid as any other, and help keep males interested in perpetuating the species.

*"most people" indicates a greater-than-50% portion of people with whom I normally converse, live and in person, as opposed to "conversing" on message boards, Web sites, Usenet and other electronic means. Margin of error, zero points.

Does it? Or does it suggest that, given the nature of (at least some) recent press coverage and public opinion, this purported action may provoke a negative and unwanted reaction due to its proximity to those events (which some, rightly or wrongly, are prone to see as similar, related, or linked)?

I don't know.

Very funny, but I hope you haven't started a trend. Otherwise, the next circumcision discussion is going to get ugly.
