A story heard on Morning Edition preceded by a MeFi post July 18, 2002 11:43 AM   Subscribe

Forgive the potential horn tooting aspect here, but check out this story from yesterday's NPR Morning Edition--note the Other Resources listed at the bottom, where a couple of links are very familiar. This is by no means the first time a story heard on Morning Edition has been preceded by a MetaFilter post. Somebody over there must be a member or lurker here. It is in many ways an improvement on the post, let it be noted.

damn you, karl, you spoiled my metatalk takeover bid.

anyway, while i'm here, i'll just ask: how come metafilter's discussion isn't listed among all those links 'borrowed' from your post, if not as a source than at least as 'another resource'?

I've noticed this on a number of occasions as well. Then, the story will move to PBS, The New Yorker, Newsweek and, finally, CNN.

probably because the Metafilter post, beyond y2karl's initial comments, got into an ugly exchange between him and Faze.

I can see his point, though. There havent been that many articles on Harry Smith recently, for this to come out now seems like more than serendipity.

For what its worth, I've also seen some of my posts copied and un-attributed. See for example my post here and this post on memepool which showed up the next day. (he uses the same obscure links to transparency now and nick bostrom)

I'm Linda Wertheimer.

Man, ColdChef. Did you get permission to link to NPR before you just did that? Think of the legal ramifications!

Dude! I work there! I'm Linda Wertheimer. See my clunky black shoes?

On the Internet, nobody knows you're Linda Wertheimer.

Yes, given the, ahem, commentary, it is just as well the post went unlinked. If one had the time and inclination, a search through recent MetaFilter posts and Morning and Weekend Edition stories would turn up several more than serendipitous examples with strikingly similar language and emphasis.

Fear not, vacapinta, for those that taketh from weblogs giveth away to MetaFilter. I've witnessed some of my weblog posts magically appear on MeFi a few days later as well.

As I've mentioned previously, I know for a fact that the producer of Fresh Air reads MetaFilter. I know because she contacted me in e-mail after I posted an Esquivel obit.

I have this image of a cigar-chewing NPR producer stomping around the office, yelling, "All you interns get on the internet and find me some stories! I need to fill 22 minutes and I need 'em by noon, swabbies!"

I can't see an NPR producer smoking anything.

Yeah, its all part of the blogosphere give and take or whatever. I wasnt really complaining (its a compliment when your ideas spread) just supporting y2karl's point.

Not anything?

Oh, I forgot about that. I retract my previous statement.

A friend of mine who interned at NPR World Domination HQ told me that the mind-altering substance of choice among the old-timers there are Bourbon Slushies.

Damn elitists.

This may be old news for most (but I'm posting it anyway - what the heck), but NPR seems to have changed its linking policy - no 'previous permission required' now .... Terms of Use: NPR encourages and permits links to content on NPR Web sites. However, NPR is an organization committed to the highest journalistic ethics and standards and to independent, noncommercial journalism, both in fact and appearance. Therefore, the linking should not (a) suggest that NPR promotes or endorses any third party?s causes, ideas, Web sites, products or services, or (b) use NPR content for inappropriate commercial purposes. We reserve the right to withdraw permission for any link.

Adam Felber from NPR's Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me! told me that indeed some of the writers of that show hit the 'Filter (not to mention that he links to MeFi on his 'blog.)

We love you right back, Adam. Well, I do anyway...

That's my favorite NPR yuk yuk show--which unfortunately is run after the extremely execrable and totally not funny Rewind, which is produced at our local NPR station KUOW--which means it's played three times a week here.

Worst. NPR. Show. Ever. I hate hate hate it.

Adam Felber is great on Wait, Wait, etc , though and so is Roy Blount Jr...

Wait Wait is a great show, often hilarious, highly recommended, and Adam Felber's blog is excellent.

I sent dhartung some BC Bud. I see he got it.

Did it go down the sewer with irony?

You really don't (didn't, doesn't, won't, shouldn't, couldn't) get it do you dhartung?

I mean shit. You miss my irony every time.
