I know you're supposed to get all deep with year-in-review stuff, but for me it's sort of a food-based holiday.

In lieu of the usual party-going, expensive dinner out then drinks-going, or hanging out with friends-going, if you're inclined (and awake), you can listen to Shepherd and I on the radio tonight from 10 pm to a little after midnight on CFRC, the oldest campus radio station in the world. We'll be doing our Top Ten of 2015 apiece alongside our favourite singles. You can stream it live on your computer or download the app to stream it there.

I just realized that all the food I'm bringing to a small gathering of friends (that's been happening almost every single year since like 1999...I think?) is...cheese.

Whiskey cheddar
Brebirousse
Cashel Blue
Double cream brie
La Sauvagine

...plus a feta/red pepper dip.

Oh, and some olives.

Happy cheese-based calendar event!!!

2015 was mostly fantastic, but then I gained all the weight back in the last two weeks.

In about two hours I will fly across the country back to Vancouver. Then I will spend the last 5 hours of the year doing the laundry and vacuuming that I've been putting off for the last few months. A responsible start to the new year!

I'd do something, but it's too late to plan now, so I'll be having a quiet one while periodically hopping on the blue. Hope the rest of you have some fun.

Happy New Years and happy end to 2015. I am working at the library (filling in for a librarian who is sick) and I came in today and then said sorry it was so cold but they set the "Thursday" temperature on the thermostat to 60 last week and forgot to set it back today. I am working on my More Relaxed Attitude Towards Other People and so I'm just snarking about it online and wearing my down coat indoors. Jim is on his way up from MA and I think we avoided the treacherous roads of Tuesday. We have a night with friends and board games, same one we always go to. Not quite a party, not quite not a party. It's always fun and we can walk home (so more than one beer for me!!). Tomorrow I put up the new calendar. Life is mostly good. Best wishes to everyone.

Happy New Year's, everyone! May your year be better than what you expect it to be.

My NY Eve tradition is to enter all the books I read for the year into a journal I've had since I was a little kid*. I'm only mentioning it because this year marks Year 30 I've done this and I'm excited about that!

(I also have the tradition to eat a lot of cheese as well, mandolin conspiracy!)

I'm already up and awake on New Years Day. It's still sunny as it has been every day since the 23rd, the most sustained spell of good weather I can remember in quite a while.

Most of my friends being married with small kids means that wild nights are pretty much out but a few of us got together for a few drinks and a chat and just managed to last to midnight.

Last year wasn't great but it ended on a better note so hopefully that will continue. Firing up the Mountain Goats (you know which one) now...

2015 brought me, roughly in order: a cancer diagnosis, surgery, a new job, chemo treatments, jumping out of a plane, a dear friend lost, love winning, a trip to Paris, clear scans, a new puppy, a house bought, and a resultant move. And along the way, I picked up a lot of kayaking time, some awesome new friends, and a healthy respect for taking each day as it comes.

It was a ludicrous mix of really great and really awful. I am glad to see it go, and yet grateful to have seen it all. May 2016 bring you peace.

Mrs. Example is under the weather, it's all crappy and rainy outside, and none of the trains we'd need are running, so we're spending New Year's Eve at home with some tasty spaghetti and garlic bread for dinner along with plenty of wine. We're warm, dry, comfortable, and surrounded by cats. There are much worse ways to see in the new year.

Happy New Year to everyone, and may it be at least as pleasant.

Happy New Year. 7.5 hours to go here. A mostly good year.

Beef burgundy stew made with 1.5 liters of merlot (so I guess it is beef napa valley stew) and stromboli for dinner with friends. Other offerings will include home brew, beer cheese dip with splet bread and general noshes.

we have special New Year's foods on stock: ham, chips and dip, beer (homebrew and craft), some Costco croissants and smoked salmon.

I attempted, in vain, to get to Costco for some demi-baguettes to go with the beef burgundy stew. We got as far as the turning lane, took a look at the parking lot and booked it back home.

Thank you to each and every one of you for your offerings of wisdom, kindness, good humor and doses of gentle tough love. Yinz are magnificent.

This was a very good year for me personally, and I'm hoping for more of the same in 2016. Invited to a few different events, I decided to embrace my introversion and stay home alone and have fun in the kitchen, which is what I'd just rather do tonight. Bread dough is proofing in the fridge for Saturday, a small orange/lime cake is made in case friends swing by, and for tonight I'll be broiling a lobster tail and a filet and having a big pile of peas on the side—because peas are the best! Man, I really love peas.

Happy new year!

2015 started off pretty quiet, until I tried to take a vacation and the pipes under my house decided this would be the time to start a major leak. Nothing like getting a 10 pm call from your housesitter 500 miles away that there's water flowing out of the bathroom floor and they are frantically throwing towels on it and what do you want them to do?

We had the landlady turn off the water and our friend was nice enough to camp out in our waterless house (now smelling of mildew!) to keep our cats company.

We live somewhere else now.

I'm a little scared to take a vacation in 2016, but the kid really wants to see the Grand Canyon, so fingers crossed.

It's midmorning of New Year's Day here. It's foggy and muggy out and the temperature's slightly below freezing, so being outside is going to be like standing in a broken walk-in cooler. But we had a breakfast of slices of white bread with sweet rice cake and red bean baked inside it, which has proven to be either the best weird food or the weirdest best food to have for breakfast.

In conclusion, 2016 is a year of textural contrasts.

I am braising a chuck roast in red wine as we speak. 2015 was a better year than 2014 for me personally, and 2016 is on track for more of the same. I have short-term goals and long-term goals that are working out not exactly as planned, but as best they might under the circumstances. I'm good with progress.

At 53 I still have my health, good steady work, a really fantastic marriage, more hobbies than I can throw a stick at, 2 great kids that never give me grief (though the boy is an enigma) so I'm just going to say that it's going alright over here.

I personally celebrate the new year at the solstice, so these couple of weeks between that & the calendric new year are a chance for me to take it easy for once, a thing I have very little practice at, & to assess the future & prep for it mentally. I think I'm ready for what comes next.

I hope all you people have a good year, & that we can avoid electing that idiot here in the US. I think we will be okay if we can pull off that trick. Here's to ya, hope your celebration tonight is fun if you're celebrating, and that your relaxation is relaxing, if you're chilling at home like us.

Peace, love, other maudlin emotions, etc.

Happy 2016! The year has just turned here and my partner and I toasted it quietly at home with wine and proseco and scritches for my Mum's dog (she's not drinking). Christmas was tough - my uncle was taken suddenly into hospital on Christmas Day and we buried him today so it doesn't feel like a time for too much celebration, but at the same time the family really rallied round all week and it reminded me of the value of connections to people who care. So I wish happiness and support for everyone who needs it tonight and this coming year, and thank you all for being around. I hope this year is full of good things for all of you. Sláinte.

For posterity's sake.

How To Remove A Stuck Bubbly Cork
Prerequisites: have already tried the blunt knife edge and towel tricks without any budging of cork. Also have tried turning it upside down and trying to twist the cork. Also have tried gently (very gently!) shaking and waiting ten minutes to see if the cork comes out of its own accord.

1. Curse at cork while putting it outside to chill overnight.
2. Notice garden shears.
3. Take bottle and garden shears inside.
4. Use garden shears to slice off the bulbous part of the cork. Note that cork is still not budging. Curse at fucking cork again.
5. Gently corkscrew the neck cork. Gently, in case it pops out. It still doesn't pop out.
6. Pull on corkscrew. It doesn't budge. WTF con de bouchon merde.
7. Pull a bit harder. It finally comes out... like a regular wine cork you have to pull on.
8. Drink bubbly. It is good.

But we bought a house, and I'm still happily married. My little old dog is still full of life despite a myriad of (omg expensive) medical problems. I read 32 books. We're both tired and happy to be back in our natural habitat, though the dog is giving us the cold shoulder for leaving her with friends for more than a week.

New Year's Eve was quiet for me. Well, apart from all my neighbors doing their best to blow up the sky with fireworks. I stood by the window to make sure that if there was a tear in the firmament over Reykjavík, I'd have time to get my family to cover. My six-month-old slept like a rock through the crazy cacophony of color, which was nice and unexpected as his every nap today had been rudely interrupted by someone shooting off fireworks, triggering waterworks. So 2016 started pretty well for me.

I will never make it to midnight

I never make it to midnight. As part of a time share program, I always get whisked away to the neatherworld by some psychopomp or other, and spend the night in terrifying contests so I can rise, phoenix-like with the sun, my terrible powers renewed for another year.

This year, it's Osiris' turn, and we usually just play a couple of quick hands of bridge with Isis and Horus, then watch movies and drink crazy spiced beer until it's time to return to mortality. Those Nile gods have been around for a while and prefer not to overdo things.

I hope everyone else's daunting hermetic rebirths are pleasant!

I read 123 books in 2015, paid off my mortgage and had the worst nights sleep of my life through New Years Eve as my neighbours continued their love affair with things that go bang. It was mostly fireworks, but some suspicious shooting-type-noises also had plenty of police-siren accompaniment. Considering last year had a police chopper hovering roughly above my house spotlighting some stupid bastard who decided to escape pursuit by diving into the local creek (which acts as a drain for a large industrial area) - I'm going to call this an improvement.

Welcome, 2016!

Looking back on it (with the benefit of a tasty gingerbread beer), 2012 was the year it all went to shit for me. 2013 was the year I hit bottom and then started pulling my life back together. 2014 and 2015 have been neutral-to-positive. I'm just hoping to keep up the 'gainfully employed doing something I love' trend through this next year. I've got food and drink and friends on the internet to keep me company, even if for the 3rd year in a row I'm staying in alone. Maybe I'll make it to local midnight (6 hours), maybe I won't, life will go on. Hoping anyone else home alone is hanging in there alright. It gets better! (Oh, and don't drunk-dial your former girlfriend; that shit NEVER ends well).

In The New Year

I want to wander
The edges of streams
Collect the essence
Of my dreams,
Remember those, who
Went on home before me,
See friendly faces at my door.
I want to laugh more,
I want more reasons to,
More delight, more meetings
With the wild things, hawk cry
Twitterings from the stream,
Shared silence, in the rising light.
In the new year I will keep
My heart alive by these small means,
Respect and love the sky,
Observe it written on slow talking,
Murmering water.
I will lace my breaths to
The glorious all, even up into
The rotation of our planets,
The knocking about of far flung
Fragments, trailing out to
Distant stars.
I will breathe and speak peace,
From the depths to the distance,
And carefully tend the path I make,
Through this new year with love.

Best to you Mefites!

I'm ringing out 2015 as a bad parent, letting my kids stay up playing Minecraft and allowing the 8 y.-o. to read tweets from Emo Kylo Ren aloud, over my shoulder. Her intonation is spot on and I laugh. This is not what I would have described as happiness 20 years ago, but tonight, it's enough.

I'll be working as a charge nurse at a psychiatric hospital tonight. My semi-nightly out-of-the-hospital coffee run will be suspended to honor the fact that the gas station is right by a whole string of bars. We're doing a pot luck across the units, so that should help balance it. I'm bringing tortilla chips and salsa.

I'll be working as a charge nurse at a psychiatric hospital tonight

God bless you. I spent the day with a parade of chronically miserable patients.* I gave them all my stupid speech about the new year being an opportunity for renewal, a chance to push away all the terrible shit from the past and start anew, mostly to convince myself that things can be better, and ran into a guy who had a really powerful argument that 2015 wasn't a uniquely bad year, that things really are getting worse as time passes. I countered that I think that he's basically right, but that humans do have the ability with a lot of hard work and attitude adjustment to change things for the better. He left with the insight that there may be hope, I left with the insight that the natural order is towards worsening pain and suffering. My hope is not gone, but I firmly believe that it is something one must swim against the tide to hold onto and anyone who is not conscious of this notion is doomed to suffer. May we all be conscious and refuse to accept what the world throws at us, and choose to reach out to those who are in need of hope.

*there was that one woman whom I assumed would be just as miserable as before when I saw her, and nevertheless, I went through the motions of offering treatment and hope last time I saw her and she was doing great today, and very grateful. I'm not sure it outweighs all the other suffering, but tonight with my hot buttered rum I'm choosing to remember her instead of all the rest

Please at least tell us who this is? I am desperate to know.

Mrs. Pterodactyl: Rachel Weisz! This was right after Stealing Beauty came out. My favorite thing about my terrible drawing is that despite being cosmically connected enough to touch our blimp boobs together and hold what looks like maybe are hands?, we're still introducing ourselves to each other. I remember spending some time trying to get our boobs to touch and make it natural despite us standing next to each other. So with the warning that it was drawn by someone. . . well, let's just say that there are 4 year olds who can draw better on their motor skill assessments than I can - Rachel Weisz is, of course, completely unrecognizable - here it is, Happy New Year.

(Ocherdraco, both my husband and I tried to take pics without any info in it and couldn't, so hopefully that will make up for it.)

Last year I posted a picture of my niece who failed to make the Midnight. Seems like a good tradition to follow, since she didn't make it again this year. Though she hit 11pm so she's getting closer. Thinking next year will be the first awake New Year's photo I'll take of her.

Fittingly for 2015, she fell asleep listening to Adele's "Hello". With headphones on because her mom finally said enough after my niece played the song 5 times in a row. My niece and I worked out a very dramatic dance to the song, blew our party horns until the other grownups fled the house for a quiet smoke, and I taught her some fake Swedish ("Uala Uala!" which means "I love you even though you smell like fish" in our made up language).

2015 was rich with sadness. I'm not having a lot of hope for 2016. But when I'm with her, sometimes it feels like everything's going to work out. Happy New Year's to everyone!

Well, now I'm home from a great party, it's after 4am, I'm eating smoked gouda with bacon in it to stave off a hangover, and I have to be at the follow-up party in eight hours. Not a bad way to start a year.

So far, 2016 appears to be full of hangovers.

Confirmed. With three of us here reporting hangovers and nobody convincingly denying the having of one, I think it's time to call it. 2016 will be all hangovers, all the time. Every day another headache, dry throat tasting of poison, muscles disinclined to work properly, blurred thinking. Every day another desperate effort to crawl out of bed and make tea. Most people will be lucky to survive to the end of February. By the time the year is over, any survivors will appear to have aged by 30 years. I may be wrong about all this, but I've got this gut feeling that says it's true.

Yesterday, the wife and I went to a super nice lunch meetup with some local mefites and some out of towners and some mefi-adjacent folks, and then over to a soon-to-leave-town buddy's apartment for Manhattans and nicoise salad, and then came home and rang in the new year in bed watching Comedy Bang! Bang! on her laptop. Got to sleep at a relatively sensible 12:45 and woke up six hours later without a hangover and clocked in with a quick happy-new-year handoff from goodnewsfortheinsane. Not the stuff of holiday legends but it was about the right speed for me and it's nice not starting the year off miserable and needing sleep.

2015 was a complicated year for me, with ups and downs but the ups winning out. I always get into some degree of a ruminative fog around the end of the year, but the second to last week of December was such a weird dense clusterfuck of good and bad all wrapped up together that I was mostly able to just focus on unclenching and enjoy the relative peace and nothing-much-to-worry-about of the last few days instead of getting too up-my-ass existential about stuff.

On the way over to the aforementioned buddy's apartment last night, we saw one of those aerodynamic plastic storage pod things a person might put on the roof of their car, but it wasn't on the roof a car so much as splayed messily on the sidewalk outside the apartment complex with its contents spilled out everywhere, which looks like a bad deal at a glance but on closer inspection it seems like literally everything inside was actual trash. Someone had been hauling around trash like it was something they needed to store, and then something bad happened and they lost their trash and didn't come back for it.

If you ignore the fact that it'll need cleaning up, that feels like not the worst portent for the new year. Just...just accidentally forget to keep hauling around all that trash you don't need. Just, oops, be free of that.

Happy new year, everybody. Life is weird and time keeps passing, but I'm glad y'all are here and that I'm here with you.

Champagne is under-rated. *cough geology fun fact coming!* Champagne originates from the wine region known as "Champagne" - no news, natch. Champagne is the French word for the Latin campania*. And Champagne is also the "type area" that the late Cretaceous stage the Campanian (in latin, also natch) was named for since it was so well represented there in the sediments. There are other regions like that in France, like Bordeaux (pretty much the lower Miocene stages (~23-16 MA).(So I've been told it is theortically possible to drink your way backwards through time via the sediments the grapes were grown in as you drink various regional types of wine in France.)

One could be romantic about it and think that the next time you drink Champagne, you're drinking the Cretaceous. Or one could be a real wine snob and declare one only like wines with a taste of the Miocene! So yeah, totally underrated!

*(and it was so named because it was topographically similar to the Campanian region of Italy, which is partially volcanic and ho-ho! partially marine deposition from the Cretaceous (as well as the Miocene, which aha! is also well represented in France, just like Bordeaux). Isn't that just neat!

It's also a straightforward pathway to consulting, and while the pay might not be as good as in the energy sector, viticulture is somewhat less boom/bust than oil. And as noted a key perk is drinking on the job.

My cat has taken to sitting on each of us in turn in what I think is a gesture of solidarity but it also might just be that we're all so immobilized by being sick that now she has that many more places to sit just because she fits.

Here's hoping the rest of the year is filled with good health, for everyone. <3

2015 was a roller coaster of awesome and suck here in blurkerville, but I'm working on remembering the awesome (which reminds me, it's time to open the Joy Jar and read about all the awesome).

Here's hoping for a much better 2016, for everyone. I'm starting by doing something I have never done, having been inspired by...The Welk, I think. I am roasting a chicken. LIKE A BOSS!

Happy New Year, folks!

2015 started on a high note which lasted about 4 months. From then until September first-ish was a downward spiral of loneliness and depression which culminated in my first ever night in jail. October got a little better and I made great strides in my relationship with my mom which has taken a few hundred pounds off my emotional shoulders. (My mom doesn't weigh a few hundred pounds, it was just that much of a relief.) In November I got a contract at a company I love after 17 months of unemployment. On December 30 I found out that my contract will be extended and may be extended again. On the 31st I scheduled movers to move me tomorrow into a new apartment in my building.

I'm starting 2016 with a new home where I will finally unpack the boxes that have been stacked in my apartment since September. I feel optimistic about my new place, keeping my job and finally being able to own my own home again by summertime. I'm also planning to take an improv class or two to finally make some friends for the first time in awhile.

The night itself was totally uneventful - I fell asleep at 10:30 and woke up at 12:15. Today I put my financial house in order and am procrastinating the remainder of my packing.

Happy new year fellow Mefites! Thank you for giving me a great community that affects my life in a good way almost every day. I haven't met most of you but I wish you all a fantastic 2016 - or that it's at least an improvement on 2015.

So last night Mrs. Grumpybear69 and I decided to take advantage of living in NYC and went to a spy-themed party which was supposed to have a game you could play that involved subterfuge and, you know, spying. It ended up being underwhelming from a spy game perspective* and there were weird porta-potties with half-height doors (?!) and I got followed down the street and harangued by the organizer when I made the mistake of talking with my wife about how I would have run the spy game. The music was great, though, and everyone was dressed to the nines. I wore a bow tie!

Afterwards we ended up at our local watering hole and had a good time chatting with one of our favorite bartenders before retiring to the homestead for some much needed sleep. Today we got breakfast at our favorite greasy spoon and then laid on the couch to finish off Making A Murderer. Also, the White Christmas episode of Black Mirror is now on Netflix!

2016 is, so far, going very well indeed.

* The "spy games" that we got to play consisted of a James Bond pose-off and a version of Morra called "Thumb Spy." Not exactly authentic.

How To Remove A Stuck Bubbly Cork

Protip: Don't use your teeth.

(Yes, I've seen someone try that, many years ago. He survived.)

I am just really tired of listing things and counting successes and losses and counting who's around and how many and how #blessed i am and am looking forward to just getting back to the work of the everyday.

Jesus, I can't favorite this enough. For whatever reason this year Thanksgiving all the way through to New Year's Eve just felt like a never-ending parade of retrospection, commemoration, demarcation, observance, and prediction. That's special in small doses but I'm honestly really, deeply glad for things just to be getting back to the normal grind or whatever.

Happy New Year to all. May it be a year that brings us all happiness and success, by whatever measure we care to use.

As for me, no specific resolutions, just a desire to be the best version of myself I can possibly be.
