spinoff sites October 2, 2016 4:16 PM   Subscribe

What are the unoffical spinoff sites? There's MetaChat - "an informal place for MeFites to touch base and post, discuss and chatter about topics that may not belong on MetaFilter." MonkeyFilter, GameFilter - "A good post to Gamefilter is a link or set of links to something that is related to gaming, gamers, or gaming culture." and MeFightClub - " started way back in ye olde 2007 as an offshoot community of Metafilter (a site where members are collectively known as 'Mefites', and that's how we get to 'Mefight' Club), dedicated to having a safe, groovy place to hang out together and play and talk about the games we love." Are there others?

It's not a MeFi spinoff, but mlkshk is an image-sharing community with a fairly small, friendly core community made up of in significant part MeFites and some folks in the long-term Greater MeFi Area.

I once registered MetaLifter.com with some nebulous plans for Metacommentary and intent to keep it out the hands of worse evildoers, but haven't done anything with it (even though I keep paying the $9 a year to renew the registration and put it in my hosting basket with other dormant sitenames). If anyone has any ideas how to MetaLift, feel free to share. I'm right here.

They're a different class of satellite project, but I want to make sure that Pronoiac's MeFiWiki and Podcast Transcripts, and Combustible Edison Lighthouse's Infodumpster get their due attention.

Speaking of the wiki, folks should consult the Related Websites article.

I am not a sports person, but SportsFilter exists and is a spinoff site I believe.

I founded Wikipedia in hopes that it would become a resource for padding FPPs.

Speaking of which, did you know that if everyone on Metafilter donated just $3 we'd be funded for the year

There was a late, lamented, 9622.net once upon a time.

There's a FAQ entry listing a few spinoff and related sites and links to some other miscellaneous stuff.

Meatfilter, sadly, fails to resolve.

Maybe a weightlifting forum where no one ever actually manages to go to the gym and lift weights, since there are always unresolved issues about the correct procedure for doing so, if using the gym supports capitalism or ableism, arguments about Henry Rollins, and so on.

mlkshk says signups are closed, so all it needs are a few JRun errors and it'll be really metafiltratious

Once upon a time I started a site called TownFilter, modeled on MetaFilter, in hopes that it might function as a news and discussion exchange for some small towns in Berkshire County, Mass. Didn't work.

Also, for a time there was BookFilter. As well as FilmFilter, GeekFilter and HumorFilter, linked in the sidebar of BookFilter.

Both metafilter.coffee and metafilter.press are apparently available, so the day can get started in a civilized fashion.

This happened quite recently (maybe two weeks ago?). I think it was getting inundated by spambots and Andre shut down sign-ups.

Mefi Clones also lists GamesFilter, MusicFilter, LibertyFilter, and GyrlFilter as being MetaPhilter based sites that were active at one point. Cursory inspection of the Wayback Machine suggests c. 2002-2004.

Why don't the two Metafilter gaming sites merge?

LibertyFilter

Was this like a right-wing MeFi? That would be... interesting.

Why don't the two Metafilter gaming sites merge?

And ruin the whole Nintendo/Sega, PlayStation/XBox, PC/Console duality thing that makes gaming so much fun?

Honestly, I think GameFilter is just a subset of MeFight Club, isn't it?

There is also the rarely updated, always amusing, excellently url'ed and favicon'ed Thank You For Contacting MetaFilter.

Which two gaming sites? If you're suggesting that GameFilter and MeFight Club become part of some sort of MeFight Club Network, I'm certain that there is no shadowy cabal that could retroactively make that happen.

Lots of sites have Metafilter subgroups inside, but that doesn't make them Metafilter spinoff sites, officially or un.

My vision for MetaLifter would be purely self-posts advertising things you've made or done that you think people should buy, as per "lifting yourself by your bootstraps".

Mostly because I do sometimes buy it if people have an album or a book out, and people in Projects are far too generous with their doing stuff mostly for free.

That or pictures of lifts in MeFite workplaces.

On the contrary, MetaFilter and all these other sites are spinoffs of cat-scan.com.
