Turkey Day 2017 with MST Club November 22, 2017 11:40 AM   Subscribe

Last year we discovered that our cytu.be video sharing room worked well with the official Shout Factory YouTube stream of the Mystery Science Theater 3000 Turkey Day marathon. So, presuming that it works so well again, some of us will be getting together to watch bad movies all day long, official style, and without having to compete with a horde of wanna-be-witty YouPotatoes in their chat. No, we can be wanna-be-witty all by ourselves, and starch-free, thank you! It'll be happening in the cytu.be room for MST Club starting Noon Eastern time and going for probably 12 hours. Drop by for the whole thing, or for just as long as you want, like when Uncle Noxious starts talking politics and you just need somewhere to GO. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone in the US, happy Just Another Day everyone else!

If it turns out that cytu.be isn't useable this time, we have a backup plan to watch it in our rabb.it room. We haven't made it through over 180 episodes of MST3K without planning ahead!

Also remember everyone, even if you can't make it this time, we're still on for this year's MST Club Christmas Marathon! Which may be our last! I'm still thinking about what to do when we finish the last episode in less than half a year from now....

I some how missed this as a thing last year, so I'm glad I clicked into this section. I'll be working from 12-8 but I may pop in from time to time.

Start again from the beginning! I've been watching MST3K off and on since the early 90s, and I still haven't managed to grow tired of it.

Anyway, look, I just want to know that there are people out there still watching MST3K. I like being able to watch and assuming someone else, somewhere in the world, is watching too. It would be depressing to think I'm the last one.

I've been annoyed to have missed this every year (because fuck yeah MST3k, even if we don't do the turkey day thing over here) but I'm working from home tomorrow in an otherwise empty house, so...

It just occurred to me -- this is the fifth annual Neo Turkey Day!

wanna-be-witty YouPotatoes

How dare you, sir.

I'm bummed on a weekly basis that the MST3K club meets during my regular work hours. I'll make it a point to swing by and watch a movie or two!

I'm watching MST3K The Return: Avalanche.

Oh shit, I think the movie is starting all over again.

I hope we get news of Season 12 this time out! There was a list of the most critically-acclaimed Netflix original shows a few days ago. The most critically-acclaimed show of them all was the new season of MST3K, with a critical approval rate of 100%.

I was all primed to hate it for various reasons, but even my cold, cynical heart couldn't resist its charm. It really is very good.

I'll be watching and participating for as long as I can, but I'm in GMT, so I might drop out early. (With an appropriate "I'm so sleepy I can barely keep my eyes open", naturally.)

Just reminding everyone we, of course, do "no guilt" marathons. No need to excuse yourself for showing up late or dropping out early, 'cause half of us will be doing the same. For example, around 2 I'll probably have to leave for a while for family dinner, which I have to drive down the road for.

BTW, I'll put some things in before the time for the official Turkey Day thing if you want to show up between now and the main event.

For those of you who can't make it, here's a YouTube playlist recreating the entire 1991 Turkey Day Marathon. Get 'em while they're available!

I'll be there with bells on once I get everyone else in the house on the road to their various destinations.

[00:06:10] TVs_Ilana: I'd rather he be Capybara Man
[00:06:20] Cranston_Snord: they get along with everyone
[00:06:38] valkane: dude, I know what I saw. El Chupacabra.
[00:06:38] TVs_Ilana: except for captivity
[00:06:53] Cranston_Snord: El Chupacapybara?
[00:07:01] ckape: I was once bitten by a radioactive capybara and now I proportional lounging powers of a capybara.
[00:07:17] Cranston_Snord: and all envy you
[00:07:17] valkane: I know what I saw. I was squirrel hunting on mushrooms? I know what I saw.
[00:07:18] TVs_Ilana: two capybaras escaped from the High Park zoo in Toronto several months ago and led everyone on a merry chase for days
[00:07:23] possibly weeks
[00:07:43] then they had babies and by a vote we named them after the members of Rush
[00:07:50] it was a very Canadian story
[00:07:52] valkane: lol
[00:08:10] I've got tears here, Ilana
[00:08:17] Cranston_Snord: Geddy Capy, Alex Capyson, Neal Peartbara
[00:08:17] TVs_Ilana: hehe :)

Glad I got to stop by and chat and watch for a few minutes.
Wonderful way to share MST3k with your Metafilter friends.
Thank you, JHarris for keeping the tapes circulating!

I had a good time chatting with you fine folks. It was a slow work day and that worked out in my favour, this marathon was well timed. I managed to watch the majority of the episodes. Cheers.

Thanks for making it out everyone! We topped out at 23 simultaneous viewers I think. But even towards the end we were at a consistent 14 minimum.

Next up on MST Club's itenerary is 904 WEREWOLF, with the classic episode 308 TIME OF THE APES, coming this Thursday starting at 7 PM Eastern/4 PM Pacific.

We also, of course, have our upcoming fourth-annual Christmas marathon, which has MST and Christmas specials mixed in.
