Broken button in blue: bounce to bottom borked January 20, 2018 10:47 PM   Subscribe

Seems as if the little arrow that takes you to the bottom of a post (I swear I knew what it was called once) isn't working for me on mobile.

Dark theme by preference but busted on the others as well, using Android, sitewide. Probably been a week or so? It's not a button I use often, though of course I want it all the time now that it's borked.

I did just update Chrome, haven't tried other mobile browsers.
The arrow acts like it's clicked, highlights, but doesn't do anything even when I mash it mindlessly. Is this a known problem? Anyone else?

(what a boring first post on the grey)

This is a known issue, which frimble mentioned here and was first reported back here.

Android Chrome has changed its behavior interacting with a script we use just for Chrome, and while frimble's pinpointed the problem, it's turning out to be a little complicated to fix!

(As a fellow Android Chrome user, this is driving me batshit, so I feel your pain!)

well that's what I get for not searching past metas, but at least I got to show off some literary alliteration and whinge a little!

I'm... glad? it took me this long to notice (and that I'm in fine company!) but, yeah, now I've turned into the kid who didn't want a toy until it was taken away. Heh.

I never noticed that arrow before! If I want to see the end of a long thread, I’ve been saving to recent activity to get there quicker than scrolling on my phone. This is excellent! (Clearly I don’t use Android Chrome.)

Whaaat? No idea this existed. I have spent weeks of my life scrolling to the end of the us politics posts.

This seems as good a place as any to say that I love those buttons on my phone, and I really wish they also showed up when viewing the site on a tablet (which they don't, for me, and never have).

apparently, that's funny you say that because I seriously thought I singlehandedly broke the button sitewide by doing exactly that maneuver! politics threads ruining everything.

Wow. Now, I don’t have to scroll forever to get to the end of a political thread!

New issue, in case frimble is working on this: Firefox on Android - clicking the down widget now opens a new "tab" (screen) and then jumps to the bottom. This is new as of this evening; the widget was working properly earlier today.

What widget is this? Is it some kind of modern theme only toy?

I don't and never have seen any newfangled skip-to-the-end button in classic themed mefi on android Firefox. What is this discrimination?
posted by dazed_one at 7:45 AM on January 22, 2018

On the classic theme there's the "skip to menu" button on the top right that will send you down to the menu buttons ("My Mefi" etc). Then you scroll half a screen up and there's the end of the thread.

12 hours later status - the Jump Down Widget is working properly again on Firefox for Android. Glitch? Bug? Code Wonkiness? We may never know?

All answers absent alliteration - atrocious!

Alliterative answers are awkward.

Interesting. I hadn't heard others were having problems. My issue (on IOS Safari and Dolphin) with long threads is that reloading takes me back multiple days, even if I'm clicking on the most recent comment time before reloading. If I have my timing right, I can hit the jump down widget during reload (when it shows the top of the thread) and then stop the reload when it shows the thread bottom. That at least minimizes the amount of scrolling needed. Anyone else experience this?

Wow. Now, I don’t have to scroll forever to get to the end of a political thread!

Now we don't have to read even just the last 10 comments via recent activity, straight to the hot takes!

Still doesn't work for me on my Android.

While we're on it, a miniature pony request: can we have this arrow on Desktop view as well? I ask because it would be really useful on tablets, which use the Desktop view but don't have Page Down/End keys.

Has something broken in the IRL default display? I’m only seeing my 1/27 NYC meetup instead of however many future events would normally fit the page. It looks like it’s displaying the next two weeks only?
posted by oh yeah! at 7:15 AM on January 24, 2018

Not broken, I believe it always displays the next two weeks... and looks like it's just coincidentally a really quiet period where the next meetup is in just over two weeks.

And adrianhon, thanks for the suggestion -- I'm told it's a little more complicated than it might seem but we can think about it.
