140: We Usually Come Up With A Title May 7, 2018 10:11 AM   Subscribe

It's episode 140 of the MetaFilter podcast, and you know what that means: we've been doing this a while and we're all out of clever ideas, leave us alone, sheesh. Also it means Jessamyn and I talk about MetaFilter stuff and sundry internetries. I obsess about house numbers a little, and we chatter about weddings and downtimes and some of that recent Stack Overflow stuff and so on. Runs about 90 minutes.

Improvised a new podcast theme for this one this morning while editing it, because, hey, it's fun to make new things. Lyrics are a bit mumbly, so:

Time to gather up your links
All the things you thought were rad
A couple things you thought stink

And you sort 'em all out
Like paper slips in your lap
It's time to lay it down
It's time to record
Another MetaFilter podcast

Like... paper slips... in your lap?? Is that a reference to The Office, or some other damn thing I'm too unhip to grok?

Just me free-associating, thinking about the idea of writing down little scraps of thoughts here and there and then trying to organize it all into a coherent list, etc. Not sure where the specific image came to me from this morning; it's not a knowing reference to anything in particular.

Me too. I've got a long drive home from a library talk tonight.

I love it when a podcast is exactly the right length to finish just as I reach my front door after a long walk.

I tried a tag search for "searhc" because,
if anything bad ever happens to your eyes,
As a result of some sort of conflict
With anyone named Nanook,

The only way you can get it fixed up
Is to go trudgin' across the tundra...
Mile after mile
Trudgin' across the tundra...
Right down to the SouthEast Alaska Regional Health Consortium
(Formerly d/b/a/ The parish of Saint Alfonzo...)

So I have an appointment on Thursday. Thanks!

We just had a discussion in a thread this month about the Bible being interesting!

And totally thanks again everyone for the Victorian sneaky sex answers, it was SO INTERESTING, totally independent of its functionality in my story! I kept sending the link to everyone I know for like a week because the answers were so fascinating.

Like... paper slips... in your lap??

I imagine that they are cheaper and more biodegradable than silk slips and not as depressing as pink slips so there’s that.

The last song was fading out just as I pulled in to my driveway. Feel you.

No seriously it was the first tab I opened ahead of time, there were just...there were a lot of tabs. Tears in the rain, etc.

Don't cry for underwear thread, it got sidebarred, it lives in all our hearts.

Incidentally there's an M.C. Escher post today.

I'm so sorry for my problematic user name. Heh. Myke from Science Park, so mykescipark. Thanks again for the support :-)

If Eyebrows McGee got to have a public Thank You Note read out on the pod, can I use up a comment here to thank everyone who helped out in my two Asks lately?

I was able to make a WICKED AWESOME pair of coconut halves for my son to carry up the side of Mt. Monadnock a few weekends ago, pretending to be Patsy all the way.

And then a bunch of folks came through for me when a family member was hospitalized while on vacation in Vienna. I got some kind words as well as useful information. (That person got home yesterday, and this morning I began the process of obtaining all the medical records, courtesy of Google Translate. Oy, this is going to be a pain!)

So Thanks to all of you, MetaFilter -- you're awesome!!!

I got an automated transcript from Otter. It's not too shabby! It can sometimes, but not always, tell Jessamyn and cortex apart.

Ooooh otter! I know the wiki is editable but is there a way to feed that back into something where people could crowdsource cleaning it up in a more ux-friendly way? If not, this is totally pretty good!

You mean, like putting it in Fanscribed, so one can listen to a snippet and correct it easily? I can look into it, though it could take some work.
