Y'know what's so cool about this place? When a comment of yours gets its very first Favorite...ten years after you made the comment. That's all. Carry on.

Surely there are other things cool about this place. I mean we once lost our shit over a mushroom.

I would favorite that.

A portabella mushroom. Identification is key.

Link for the new kids, some of whom may be mushroom enthusiasts named Emmy Rae?

Yeah I wanna see this amazing mushroom post too.

Well you can see it from here but Chrome is flashing up a red screen on the original thread and warning about img phishing so maybe it's better to live in the now.

Ok so first you need to understand, it was a long time ago -- 2005 -- and things on the site were very different. If a thread blew up overnight, mathowie might not see it until many hours later, and there could be anarchic outcomes, and in general things weren't deleted. That's what happened with this -- a newish user was griping about a supermarket clerk not knowing their mushrooms well enough, and people made a lot of fun of them. There's an explanation of the portabello mushroom thread on the Mefi wiki.

Also according to the Wiki the original poster has since died and now I'm sad and kind of sorry I brought it up, though looking at the original thread I'm surprised to see I never posted in it.

Metafilter was a lot more wild west back then. We're nicer now.

We're nicer now.

HAHAHAHAHAHOHOHOHEEHEE

Actually I was just reading through the entire deleted Askme blog, and the number of deletions has dropped drastically over the past few years, there's almost never a deletion for chatfilter anymore. Perhaps we've been just beaten into submission?

Comment fom the mushroom thread:

this picture of portobello mushrooms is not the best one on the web.

Some things haven't changed that much.

I get these pips of pleasure every now and then thanks to FanFare, and it's always weird to think that someone seems to be experiencing a show for the first time that I watched years ago.

So, it's nearly time for the 20th anniversary- is there going to be a thing?

I was ranting on the insurance industry so, yeah, I pretty much still agree.

That... doesn't feel like an awesome or accurate way to describe the Metafilter moderator culture.

Oh, except the back surgery turned out be over four hours long and a lot more serious than I thought it would be.

Just today I saw a thread that referred and linked back to one of my favorites of my own comments from 10 years ago (my apologies, the device I am using I haven't yet figured out how to copy and paste links with and if my main device doesn't recover from a major breakdown soon, I will have a major breakdown before I figure it out). Anyway, this place has never ceased to be a cool place, even during the times I was not so cool.

I got one of those the other day... not a 10 year old comment - but still a two year old one that has still been long closed... I'm hoping - fingers crossed - that it turns into a pony - because there is no way someone searched and found that comment without some serious levels of random chance. And yeah... validation in life.

Goodness, that's 14 years I've been chuckling about that thread whenever I see a portobello mushroom.

How do folk know about old comments suddenly getting favourites - is there some sort of notification setting I've missed?

Looking at my 'favourited by others' page, it seems like people are really into reading ancient threads - in the past few months I've had favourites on a 13-year-old comment about Fa'afafines, a 7-year-old story about almost copping off with a massive racist and, er, me calling another user a 'knobend' in 2005.

Is this the "weird things from a decade ago" post? Great!

So yesterday, I was at the playground with both of my kids, generally enjoying the sudden spring thaw and getting both small people out of the house, whose walls they've been climbing since ~December. I got to talking with another mom on the playground, who seemed really familiar but who I couldn't place, until she told me her name and it suddenly clicked that I went on a match.com date with her, twelve years ago. It was not a particularly good or bad date, but it was memorable, in that a mouse ran across her foot while we were having coffee in a crappy Starbucks on Newbury Street, and much screaming and leaping onto the table ensued. We discussed this and laughed at how small a town Boston is, but she clearly didn't remember me and probably thought I was making it up. So I performed the greatest feat of email thread necromancy I will ever manage. I dug up the original email chain from 2007, and replied to her last message to say it was nice to meet her 3-year-old, and that my 5-year-old liked playing with her. Elapsed time between message and response: 11 years, 5 months.

For those asking about how people notice old comments getting new favorites, you can see recently favorited comments of yours here. The navigation is: go to Recent Activity (in the menu bar at the very top of the page), and from the sub menu there (My Activity, My Favorites, Recent Favorites, My Contacts), click "Recent Favorites." (This is in Modern on desktop ... apologies if navigating isn't the same in a different version you might be using!)
