My Ask Odometer just turned over 12345! July 28, 2019 1:45 PM   Subscribe

I just noticed that I have exactly 12345 answers on Ask! People post photos of their car odometers when they hit sequential numbers, but I don't own a car, so I'm marking this milestone instead.

I love Metafilter deeply, but it's Ask that is my true internet home, and it has been for a dozen years. I am so glad that this site exists; it's been a huge part of my life for just under a quarter of my existence and for just under half my time on the interwebs. I've met some great people at meetups, exchanged some nice MeMail with others, and feel as though I've gotten to know many more through their questions and more so, their answers on Ask.

I genuinely hope we're all here for another 20 years, learning from both sides of one another's life experiences. Thank you to everyone who shares their conundrums and their thoughts to make Ask the unique, thoughtful place I love.

Yay! Me and the mister are very MeFi-nerdy like this and when I'm approaching a favorites milestone, I'll ping him and have him fave something so that he's the one that gave me a round-number favorite. This is such a nice post.

You gave me an answer once (to a sock puppet account question) that was very kind and understanding, and really validated a difficult thing I was feeling. Thank you for that, and for your presence on AskMe. Congrats on the milestone! Maybe I’ll see you at an Ireland meet-up one day :)

I would love to hear any of the favorite answers you’ve given or fave questions you’ve asked, if any stand out!

Dammit! I meant “fave questions you’ve answered,” not ones you’ve asked: as in, were there any questions you’ve answered that stand out in your mind, like any bizarre ones you tried your best to help out with or any that seemed tailor made for you to answer?

Congrats, but don't let the beauty of this number/achievement prevent you from answering more questions out of reluctance to spoil it; we need your wisdom!

I don't recall hitting any big MeFi numerical milestones of late, but I noticed probably a couple of years after I stopped lurking and ponied up my five bucks that I joined on 8/8/08 (you can read that either as American or European usage). That was entirely unintentional but is pleasing in retrospect.

Weird. Eerie.

I have actually considered favoriting a bunch of my own comments when I'm within reach of a number I like, and then deleting them one by one as needed to stay at that number going forward.

I love you, love your answers, love your presence on this site. You typify great askme behaviour, DarlingBri.

You only weigh in when you have something to add; you always try to be compassionate and not judgmental; you always come at things from a pragmatic angle; your answers are never too long or too short.

It's awesome you have 12 000 answers, I'd like to recognise all the times you didn't answer too, as I honestly think that's just as important! For example, you've only answered one of my questions once. What a crock! I better cook something up fast so I can get in on this action!

Dammit kyrademon I was coming here to make that joke!

Thanks for all the great answers, DarlingBri!

charmedimsure, you have no idea how happy that makes me. I mean, obviously I'm glad you discovered you've got curly hair, but more so because I did not mention at the time that the haircut in question cost THREE HUNDRED AND FIFTY DOLLARS BEFORE TIP, ten years ago, and I am determined to wring every last cent of value I can from that day by passing on the info to others for free.

I do not consistently achieve this but this is a beautifully phrased aspirational goal and I'm genuinely chuffed someone thinks I achieve it even some of the time. Thank you.

Man, the other day I turned from a trip setting to the overall odometer and it was exactly 32,000. Then I pulled forward and like 10 feet later it was 32,001. So I was like "Nice!"

And the guy at the grocery store nailed my meat request of 1.5 lbs exactly to 1.500 and we both were overjoyed. My bill came to 54.99 which also felt pleasing.

I was one with the universe for a day. It endlessly pleased me. Also, I love this post and I love all of you. Hi. I see you.

Also @jessamyn I was driving and turned to NPR and at that exact moment they said "And here's Jessamyn West in Vermont" and you came on and were like WELL HERE IS THE THING PEOPLE about … libraries? Or something political? It was great. I forget why you were mad but it was 100% right and fiery and succinct and I was like "Yes, thanks for me listening at this exact moment."

were there any questions you’ve answered that stand out in your mind, like any bizarre ones you tried your best to help out with or any that seemed tailor made for you to answer?

Yes. There are two questions about leaving a partner that stick in my brain. One was a question I can't find right now where someone asked with a straight face if there was a good way to leave the mother of their two-month old infant. My brain still reels, and I think about all of the players in that situation fairly regularly. The other was a question about having an affair where I felt like my experiences in that department could be of actual use to someone.

But if someone wants to stick The attitude we look for in people with whom we share our bodies is like the Academy Awards: "It's just an honor to be nominated and I'm thrilled to be here tonight." Anything else can walk the fuck home. on my tombstone, I will be very happy if that is the mark I literally leave on the world.

you came on and were like WELL HERE IS THE THING PEOPLE

It was a very brief Fuck Equifax comment.

Anything else can walk the fuck home.

Reader, she dumped him. Thanks again for pointing out that comment. I love it.

Oh yes, the main topic at hand. I was too distracted by my serendipity. I think I've helped some people on AskMe, and it's been very rewarding overall. Made a few friends!

Can we nominate posters who continually inspire us since now I'm thinking about the Academy Awards. I forget how to actually tag someone but @MiraK does that for me. And last week a person just messaged me to say they saw a response I'd made that was sad. That was cool. Thanks, @glinn last week and @rue72 and @wellred for being really nice before.

I wonder what my favorite response I've made has been. Hmmmm! I will have to consider.

Oh my god, there have been more than one question about men leaving their wife after she just gave birth, DarlingBri, and they stick in my mind too. It could have been this one I remembered well enough to find with some keyword searches but there are definitely more, I hope you gave your straightforward and helpful advice in all of them! I wish we got updates from the original posters on ones like those.

Speaking of OP updates, that thread about the boyfriend who insisted his partner be clean-shaven was one my favorites in terms of updates and also home to one of my favorite comments on MF — the one you gave! Loved reading it again.

Here's to the next 12345 answers! Cheers!

Congrats, and thanks for being here! I've had literal and figurative odometer's on my mind a lot lately; my car's been creeping up on 65536 = 216 for a while and I'm hoping to notice and grab a photo when it rolls over.
