eBay auction for MetaFilter song August 31, 2002 9:47 AM   Subscribe

Whoops, my bad. I added the link as a FPP.

I was suggesting that MeFites could bid on the auction as a means of providing a tribute to Matt's efforts in running the site. Y'know, Ballad of Metafilter, that sort of thing...

ack. please say this isn't so.

#5. I refuse to write songs about clowns. I have to draw the line somewhere. If you are a clown, or want a song written about a clown, please do not bid.

posted by eyeballkid at 10:33 AM on August 31, 2002

I want to bid just so I can see how he works in the word "obseqious". That's some talent, there.
posted by mr_crash_davis at 10:39 AM on August 31, 2002

This song (2mb .wma file) by They Might Be Giants has the word obsequious in it, that's almost as good as "obseqious".

Beer, it's not just for breakfast anymore.

Well met, mr_crash.

I like the rock songs they do for people on Whose Line is it Anyway?. Somehow, I don't think this would be nearly as neat.

I Love the 'Filter*

Loggin' on -- back on the site,
Done with Fark, Done with Plastic.
Went to ObscureStore now I'm back on the blue
Gotta post, gotta comment inside --
So many sites, just not enough time,
MeFi condenses it for ya,
Don't lose your grip on the mouse in your palm,
You must log in each day to keep up –

It's the cream of the Internet,
It's the best of the sites,
Your one stop shop for wack news and flash games,
We may fight about crap
But we're polite dames and chaps,
And we're Filtering all of the siiiiiites
I love MeFiers.

*sung, of course, to the tune of "Eye of the Tiger"

I walked 47 miles on barbed-wire,
Got a cobra-snake for a necktie.
I built a house by the roadside,
Made of rattlesnake hide.

Got a brand new chimney up on top,
Made out of human skulls.
Come on baby take a walk with me,
And tell me who do you love?

Tombstone head and a graveyard mind,
I'm just 22 and I don't mind dying.
Rode around the town with a rattlesnake whip,
Come on baby don't give me no lip.
posted by stavrosthewonderchicken at 10:05 PM on August 31, 2002

Not to detract from the brilliance of the 'Chef, of course. Synchronicitously, that 'just 22 and I don't mind dying' lyric has been running through my head all day : just trying to clear the voodoo curse. Rock over London, rock on Chicago!

Fair MetaFilter, like evening's blue sky
Dotted with white letters, language's stars,
You evade description, should I dare try
With my unfit hand to write thy memoirs?

Stalwart mathowie rules with gentleness,
Yet when rous'd, like wildfire o'er dry grass sweeps,
His justice is swift; he proves his fitness
To lead each day, and never seems to sleep,

Though oft argument for argument's sake
Does grip thy pages, thou art mostly fair.
Full of praise and discourse, even pancake
Can't mar thee, Dost thou know that thou art rare?

If the world to you seems out of kilter,
It's because you're not on MetaFilter.

Betcha wonder how I knew
I read your post on big blue
Your thread it better rock
or they'll drag your ass into MetaTalk
I'll try to get it through my head
before mathowie deletes the thread

Don't you know that I read it on the MeFi
and now the fur begins to fly
Oh I read it on the MeFi
and my modems just about to fry..

honey, honey, yeah

Well you came and you gave without takin'... How happy you made me, oh Mefi!"

How they read in the evenings,
sweet links in mind,
some come just to discuss,
some come just to find.
So I called up Mathowie,
"This thread's double post." He said
"But we haven't seen this link since
And still there's somebody bitching or taking offense,
posting ad hominem at 3 a.m.
getting too damn tense

Welcome to the weblog Metafilter...

Waiting for the Newbie Influx
(to the tune of Billy Bragg's Waiting for the Great Leap Forwards)

It may have been Camelot for Matt and his Kottke
But on the Information highway wall-to-wall with corporate tchotchkes
A kind old Mefite spies a newbie there who's crying
Over a posting's disappointment
So he clicks over and he's trying
To sympathise with her but he thinks that he should warn her
That Metatalk is just around the corner

Submission queue at Plastic, and Carl's vision is blinded
By the trolling of a newbie user and he is reminded
that Metafilter's Matthew Haughey's optimism fell
At the first Double

Sitting at my PC and the only thing I see
Is the blue of #006699
And a post about I/P
And someone playing troll and basking in the light
Of the fifteen fame filled minutes of the weblog writer

Mixing Web and Politics they ask us what the use is
We offer them embarrassment and our usual excuses
While checking the latest Bush thread
Where some angry folks are posting
I'm looking for the Newbie Influx

Ebay sales are organised and rants have all been posted
There isn't any closing time and there's weblogs to be hosted
You can be Meta with the Mefites
Or Fark Off with the Farkers
While you're waiting for the Newbie Influx

One leap forwards two leaps back
Metafilter's more addictive than crack!
Called out on MeTa and you can't run from it
Checked your profile but there's no email on it

It's a mighty long way down the totem pole
From MeFi at Work to drawing the dole

If no one seems to understand
Start your very own weblog, cut out the middleman

In a perfect world we'd all sing in tune
We're all in this together, but give me some room!

So join Metafilter while you may
Tiresome trolling's just a 5 bucks away
Waiting for the Newbie Influx

It wasn't a long time ago,
I can still remember how those posters used to make me smile
& I knew with that phone line
I could make them all see mine
(Maybe we'd take AOL on trial)

Now clavdiv's prose is all a quiver
'n bas67 has her webcam with 'er
Good news on the server
But spellchecks causing murder

Now I can't remember, how i found
the 'Filter, on the first time round
Something on the 'Net was sound
And then,
The T1 downed.

And we were cringing
Bye Bye Metafilter we sighed,
drove my Segway to the Cafe but the Cafe was tied
to a Network backbone,
whose connection was fried,
'This'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die.'

This'll probably never get seen, but what the hell:

Sing along with this midi file on my server!

I am the very model of a Mefi net contributor,
I've information topical and facts that always fail to bore,
I know the links off by heart and love the flame-fests political,
From the Middle East to Dubya Bush in order categorical.

I'm very well acquainted with matters controversial,
I won a Tivo like the rest and now see no commericials,
About the laws on handguns I am sending off a counterblast,
With many cheerful facts about the years fossil fuels'll last,

(Repeat 'With many...' three time)

I'll call you out on your insult, why, to say that I'm a 'dork',
And throw you to the wolves at that dark place they call Metatalk,
In short in matters topical and facts that always fail to bore,
I am the very model of a Mefi net contributor

(In short in matters topical and facts that always fail to bore,
He is the very model of a Mefi net contributor)

I post about all matters of grave trans*national* importance,
Yes, pancakes, Apple Macs and Israel-Palestinian rants,
I really can't believe that free signups are now mythical,
And my three digit ID is worryingly old and atypical,

I've upset several people with my comments on the Bible,
And sent a thousand posts just to be Alpha-Male or Dog or Gal,
I always check the website for the latest messages constantly,
And my phone bill, well hell, that's just not my responsibility,

(Repeat 'And my phone bill...' three times)

I say that a post a day is good enough for anyone,
And join in poking fun at the guys at Plastic dot com,
In short in matters topical and facts that always fail to bore,
I am the very model of a Mefi net contributor

(In short in matters topical and facts that always fail to bore,
He is the very model of a Mefi net contributor)

In fact when I know how to annoy Miguel C reliably,
When I know how to figure out Clavdivs 'cos he's so damn crazy,
When I can spot a double post and shut down threads immediately,
And when I've found my true saviour and his name is Mathowie,

When I have learnt why all newbies aren't so bad at all,
And when I know that a new server will be working during this fall,
In short when I've two hundred posts to this web mailing list,
You'll say a better contributor will never be so missed,

(Repeat 'You'll say a...' three times)

For all my worldly experience although I claim to know it all,
Could barely serve to hold my own in a Mefi flame brawl,
But still, in matters topical and facts that always fail to bore,
I am the very model of a Mefi net contributor.

OK, Ade, here it is...I only held it for a few short hours, but - like a Canadian Ice Dancer who quietly, and with dignity, awaits the true prize - you deseve it.

O! you're from Cambridge? That changes EVERYTHING...
posted by dash_slot- at 9:17 AM on September 3, 2002

Heh, thanks :) Of course, it's not surprise to me that the true quality of Cambridge shines out over that of Oxford... :)

Although in the interests of full disclosure, the song was somewhat adapted from another song that I wrote about the [David] Brin-L mailing list. Brin thought it was cool and dubbed me 'Major General Hon'...
