But yeah bondcliff mostly has it, which is not from me but I like it. I outline more about it in this essay from a while ago about trying to be a good activist.

I also have a short cut which is like "Imagine people who are being jerks have just come from the dentist" and sometimes that can help jumpstart empathy in a situation whether otherwise it's tough to conjure.

I think specifically this came up in MeTa where people were doing a sort of "competitive suffering" thing

That phrase came to mind, and was ultimately useful, when I was surrounded by idiots and 18 pounds of cheese a few years back.
