I would just like to tell Miguel (and the MetaFilter community): Well. Done.

I'll second that. I was skeptical of this, but it came off really well.

While I wasn't comfortable contributing myself, I was gratified to see it come off with only a few stupid snipes. Great stuff.

I wonder if perhaps Matt should close the thread after today?
posted by frykitty at 7:41 PM on September 11, 2002

It would be thematic to leave it open for 30 days, taking its chances like any other thread.

Miguel: are you editing a magazine in Portugal yet? You really should be.

Indeed, I think the entire community deserves to be praised for generally keeping our wits about us and not getting to that "last-man-standing" place that I was worried about last week. There will always be some contentious dialogue here, but things progressed much like any other day. It was a welcome relief.

Two gold stars for Miguel.

Yes, thanks to all of you bright people. You done good. The world isn't such a small, mean place after all.

Exactly. I wasn't comfortable contributing, but the links everyone else provided made for some damn good reads. My sincerest thanks to everyone.

Thanks Miguel. A great idea well executed.

Of course, I will have to quit my job so I have time to read all the links :-)

Miguel did us all a huge favour by managing to keep all of that crap in one place. I would hope that those of us who (like me) wanted it at arm's length, and also those who wanted to see it but not have it flood the front page would all be pleased by the way it came off. A win-win situation.

What da...?

*sudden jolt of pain freezes arm; unbearable pressure in chest; keels over; with just the time to say, before chin hits ground, he preferred the old Meta*

Nah, thanks guys - on my part it was nothing. Though I did get through a lot of skin and enamel, grinding my teeth and palms together when the thread started and going "please, please, please ..." ;)

Miguel, you suave, sentimental sucker, you did a fine job.

*thumbs up*

my tribute was to not pay any attention to any media yesterday, which was hard, believe me. very nice to come here today and see the success of that post. well done Miguel and all.

Thanks to everyone, whether cynic, sceptic and sentimentalist, agnostic, atheist or believer. I was moved by the media portrayals in the uk, esp. the 9/11 film by those brave French guys, but more than anything, by the sensitive and elegant format on that Mefi thread.

I would pray that we never need anything similar ever again.

yah, god knows we have far too much elegance and sensitivity around here. [shudder]

It is our duty as Americans to commemorate this occasion by getting sick on Vintage Port while wearing tinfoil conquistador hats and velour pantaloons.

Who's with me?!
posted by Kafkaesque at 8:51 AM on September 12, 2002

My pantaloons are at the dry cleaners.

well, I will need that Kubota to load on the helmet. i just upgraded from tin foil to cold-rolled steel.

will sans coullotes suffice?

I've got my tinfoil doubloons and velveteen hat! Oh, wait.

Seriously, though, it was very well done. Thanks for the brilliant idea, Miguel.

I'd just like to point out that I was a Miguel fan before it was hip.

It was outstanding to have a member not being a citizen of the United States of America to post this FPP. Why?, it reflects more to me coming from an allie.
You hear that, Mig, you're hip, as in joined with us at the hip.....Is there a doctor in the house to cut me loose :)

Does this mean we can't complain about one-word nondescriptive posts anymore? Not to poop on the party, but I miss the annotation. Hopefully there won't be reason to do this again anytime soon.
posted by stupidsexyFlanders at 10:54 AM on September 12, 2002

Thanks Miguel and thanks metafilter. I agree the thread worked. Stupidsexyflanders: try to pick up the mouseovers off the links. Many people skirted around the "no-annotation" rule quite gracefully.
