Fundraiser: cortex's Stained Glass MetaFilter Favicon up for auction

Want to own this lovely Stained Glass MetaFilter Favicon created by cortex?

Last year, I purchased cortex's Stained Glass MetaFilter Favicon in the auction for the buy-it-now price of $150. I would like to offer it up to the highest bidder - starting bid of $50 to raise funds for the site. Folks can comment or memail me with a bid - and I'll stop taking bids on Sept 15 - 11:59 PM PST.

For simplicity - bidders in the United States only - please.

I'll reach out to the highest bidder on September 16 - that person can then make a donation to metafilter. Then I'll ship out the favicon to the lucky winner.

I'm not familiar with the term "flavicon"???

also, what are the dimensions please?

6"x6", per the link; the page also says "favicon", but I do like the word "flavicon". Guy Fieri, for example, might be a Flavicon.

Should be "favicon" (though for a moment I wondered if cortex had been exiled to Flavortown). It references the website icon that you likely see in the browser tab. Generally it's the site's logo.

Dimensions according to the linked post are 6 inches square.

Why on earth is there a Buy It Now price on a fundraiser? The literal goal here is to force people to bid absurd sums on something that isn't really worth that much. That's the entire point of a charity auction. Not to sell things. To spark dumb bidding wars.

How about using last year's auction site so that people can see how pricey it gets and get into bidding wars etc.? (this is more generally than just the flavicon!)

I'll update this thread with the current price for anonymous bids. People are welcome to bid in thread too. Given the volume of bids so far (1), I'm thinking it's not necessary to pay $50 to set up the mini auction...

Hey skunk pig, I'm not bidding this time but I'm going to toss in $25 as a bonus to whatever you get for the winning bid. So if the winning bid is, say, $300, the total impact of that person's winning bid would be $325. Sound good?

Would be kind of wild if this turns into an annual auction (like you really are bidding on holding the stained glass for the year - skunk pig being the current world champion holder). The winner should be announced in thread and the thread should then auto play "Eye of the Tiger" on load after that. Edit: Would also need a way to engrave the list of each year's winner on the site somewhere.

That's a fun idea, inflatablekiwi, but it would be up to the new owner. When I originally bought it, I intended it to be a gift, but that didn't go as planned... hence the re-auction. Hopefully the new owner will have better luck.

We still only have one bid at $250, so if anyone else is interested, please post here or send me a message.
