Fundraising Idea -- MeFi Book(s)

The "Life Hack" question now on AskMe made me think of this. Over the years, AskMe has collected a bunch of enduring info on life hacks and other topics. One or more people could organize that, put it into a booklet form and sell it for the good of MeFi. Or would that be any conflict?

Fundraising Idea: AskMe Update Bounties

An idea for fundraising... What are the AskMe posts you most wanted to see updates on that did not get them? What would you be willing to donate to MetaFilter to get that update? Would you donate $5 to see if they ate the thing? $5 to find out if they went with a product rec from the Ask and whether it worked? $10 to see if they quit that job? $20 to see if they DTMF? Let's bribe our way into some answers. [more inside]

🎉Fundraising Wrap-Up: You've put MetaFilter on the road to Revival!

A few months ago we came to you with information we had just learned about the dire financial state of MetaFilter. The site was losing money every month and the cash reserves keeping it afloat had run dry. The situation was grim. But MeFites, you stepped up in a big, big way: recurring contributions have gone up by $9,863.10 and we have received $78,857.91 in one-time contributions (both figures are net). This means that according to our targets MetaFilter has more than enough budget to Survive, and is within striking distance of Revive! There are more details inside about the specifics of the fundraiser and how the funds will be used, so please keep reading… [more inside]

Urgent Site Fundraising Appeal: Who is Responsible for the Banner?

Over the last few days, there have been numerous comments on the Gray, the Blue, the Green, and on MetafilterMeta on Reddit asking why the fundraising banner in the Metafilter menubar isn't communicating the site's fundraising needs both more urgently and more noticeably. It's well-known that not everyone reads the Gray. That means that non-Gray readers, which includes long-time lurkers and friends of the site, are not being well-served here. Who has control over the banner, and why isn't this a priority? [more inside]

What is MetaFilter worth to you?

As we continue with the fundraising drive to try to keep the lights on here (please donate if you can!), this has had me thinking about what the value of MetaFilter is in my life, relative to other regular expenses I have. The Steering Committee's financial update has made it very clear what it costs to keep MetaFilter running, and the question I've been turning over in my mind is, what is the value that MetaFilter provides for its members? August is MetaFilter fundraising month

It's fundraising time! MetaFilter depends primarily on user and reader support to continue to operate: that funding pays for moderation, site development, and basic administrative costs like server hosting. It is increasingly difficult to operate a site like ours in the modern web economy, and your financial contributions through one-time contributions and recurring subscriptions have made, and will make, all the difference in keeping MeFi going.

You can start or increase your subscription here. I'll answer some questions about what we need, where the money goes, and what's coming up below, so come on inside if you want more detail. [more inside]

Help cortex cut his hair, fundraising edition.

Clarification: Is an active Crowd-Funded post ever okay on MeFi?

I have searched the MetaTalk for this and can't seem to find a definitive answer - apologies if one already exists and I missed it. My question - if something is currently being crowd-funded, but has already met/exceeded it's funding goal - is using it as part of a MeFi post grounds for automatic deletion of the post? Check Yes to confirm that this Kickstarter campaign is over

Because not enough people read the FAQ, posts are made about live online fundraising projects from time to time. I thought it could it be beneficial to have an additional check box appear when a Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or other major fundraising sites are linked in a front page post, asking the poster to confirm that the fundraising campaign is over.

Donated, thanked

When we threw the 100k raffle back in November, we raised almost $1,000 for DonorsChoose.org. Since I couldn't find a direct organizational donation, I ended up funding several projects in science, culture, and special needs around the country. The thank you letters came pouring in this week and here are some screenshots: (1, 2, 3, 4). Thanks again all for donating.

MetaFilter Fundraising for Fun

Announcing the new MetaFilter Fundraising for Fun project. dios and rothko/AlexReynolds have agreed to let you guys vote with your dollars, for charity. Throw some cash into the till for the guy you want to take a break for a week, and in the end it all goes to Creative Commons' fundraiser. Think of it as a charity dunk tank: you put down five bucks to toss a few at the guy you love to hate. It'll run for a week, so let's make the fun last.
