The group planning the transition to make MetaFilter a nonprofit held its first meeting Nov. 15. This is a brief update to keep you all up to date with the progress made.
The group planning the transition to make MetaFilter a nonprofit held its first meeting Nov. 15. We discussed norms and preliminary roles, and the possibility of having the nonprofit stood stood up by July 1, 2024.
A couple of things that we discussed but bear further fleshing out are transparency and our overall goal(s). Our next meeting is scheduled for Nov. 29. We have not yet decided how narrow or broad our scope will be, but it does include:
* establishing a nonprofit,
* designing a model of governance and community accountability,
* installing a board, and
* hiring an executive director.
Our members are:

* Kybard

Sending regrets that I don't have more personal bandwidth to be involved, but also just drive-bying to say THANK YOU to everyone helping move this forward! I look forward to pivoting my current site-uptime donation to the eventual nonprofit once it's up and running.

Sounds like by our 25th anniversary we’ll be (or be well on the way to becoming) a fully user-run nonprofit. Here’s to a thousand years before we have to change ownership models again.

It's been over three months since the last podcast, and there's only been that one in the last 8+ months.
Maybe the podcasts could be a thing - another means of dissemination but to wider audiences(?) - which Jessamyn, mods, and/or the transition group could make some use of? Especially if the podcasts can be used to indirectly or even directly raise or find income in some way.

how was the transition group chosen?
I believe it includes everyone who volunteered to be on it.

Speaking just as myself:
Re podcasts – The interim board will likely have a team to work on communications or community engagement. But we are in the early part of setting up committees. As far as raising money and the LLC and non-employees working together, we still can’t have volunteers work for the LLC.
Re composition – The statement by snofoam is correct. Everyone who volunteered for the interim board is part of it. But I had missed a couple of people earlier. 1adam12 and mygothlaundry are also on the board.
